AGAVE: BEST FEEDSTOCK FOR ETHANOL
1. AGAVE: BEST ENERGY CROP FOR 1ST AND 2ND
GENERATION ETHANOL PRODUCTION
Last year, outside Mexico, 16 scientific studies were published regarding agave as
energy crop, being the LCA and Energy Balance Study published by Oxford University
and Sydney University(doc attached) of utmost importance, since agave is compared to
corn and sugarcane in 1st generation ethanol production. The results conclude that
Agave is superior to sugarcane or corn for 1st generation ethanol production:
A couple of months ago, the Royal Society of Chemistry published Charles E.Wayman's
work on characterization and chemical composition of agave fibres (doc attached).
When compared to poplar tree and switchgrass, agave dry biomass was also superior
and can yield up to twice the cellulosic gallons of ethanol per hectare!:
2. Please, notice their calculation is based on Agavetequilana‘syield of dry biomass,
ranging from 10-34T dry biomass/Ha/Yr. DrPark Nobel has estimated an annual yield of
up to 42T dry biomass/Ha/Yr, for Agavesalmiana:
And I plan to get an annual yield of 65T/Ha dry biomass with A. americana, yielding up
to 4 times more cellulosic ethanol per hectare per yearthan switchgrass or poplar tree.
3. Agave's great potential as feedstock for liquid biofuels production has thus been
scientifically demonstrated. For 1st and 2nd generation liquisbiofuels, agave is the best
feedstock available.
Currently, I can get ahold of over one hundred million tonnes of agave biomass
established at commercial plantations in the 5 continents (~1/3 in Mexico). The size of
these plantations can be doubled every year, allowing for massive biofuels production.
Agave will bring wealth and health to the regions that cultivate it. They’re excellent crops
to combat climate change and poverty in the marginaldrylands of the world, where two
billion of the poorest people barely survive…
