1. ERNESTO TEODORO MONETA
Nobel Prize for Peace in 1907
"Perhaps it is not far from the day when all peoples, forgetting old grudges, will
come together under the banner of universal brotherhood and, ceasing any dispute,
cultivate relations among themselves entirely peaceful, such as trade and industrial
activities, tightening solid connections . We are looking forward to that day. “
2. Journalist and patriot was born in
Milan on September 20, 1833.
In 1866 he started writing for the
newspaper the "Century". In
those years several
associations of pacifist nature
were born in Europe with the
aim to establish a Charter of
Arbitration that would resolve
international conflicts by
recourse to law and not to
violence.
3. He contributed to the creation
of the "Society for Peace
and Justice “ and passed
from the activity of a
journalist to that of speaker
of pacifist ideas.
In 1887 he founded "The
Lombard Union for Peace"
and the "Company for Peace
and International Justice." In
1890 he founded the
"Almanac for peace," a
newspaper that reported
frequent updates on
National and International
Congress on peace.
4. In 1895 he was designated as
representative of the
Italian Commission of the
International Peace
Bureau. In 1898 he
founded the magazine "
International Life" and his
investigation and his
commitment took on a
decidedly cosmopolitan air
that introduced him into
the European background
creating the conditions for
the award of the Nobel
Prize for peace.
5. In 1904 Moneta was elected
president of the First
National Congress of Peace
in Turin and Vice-President
at the 13th
World Congress
for Peace in Boston.
In 1906 he organized a
"Pavilion for peace," at the
World Fair in Milan during
which he led as president
the15th International
Congress on Peace ..
6. In 1907 he was appointed Chairman
of the Board of Directors of the
Federation of the Italian Company
for Peace .For his meritorious work
and activism against the war and
for his numerous actions to the
creation of an International Peace
Movement on December 10,1907
he received the Nobel Prize for
peace obtained for “his
commitment and the foundation of
Lombard Union for Peace and
Arbitration "; prize which was a
universal recognition of his
numerous initiatives for peace and
for the Civil Progress of mankind.
7. In 1908 he went to Norway where in
the hall of the Institute for the
Nobel Prize of Oslo he held a
conference on “ Peace and Law in
the Italian Tradition “,where he
introduced his idea on peace
based on Disarmament;
International Arbitration;
Federation..
On February 10, 1918 Ernesto
Teodoro Moneta died , precursor
of pacifism, a man who tirelessly
preaching the idea of a universal
pacifism , had consecrated all his
life to the country, to humanity, to
Civil harmony, to peace and
brotherhood among peoples.
