1. • What proportion are produced by American film companies and how many are
produced by British film companies?
The majority of films in my local cinema are produced by 50%, which is around 12 movies of all
the films listed in Cine world are produced by American film companies and 30% of all films listed
in are produced by British film companies
• Do the films that are showing reinforce contemporary western culture as being
dominant and positive, or challenge the dominant ideology and depict the darker,
weaker parts of our society
A film that is showcased in the cinema that undermines the western culture as being dominant and
positive is The Revenant as Hugh Glass cares about bringing revenge on his hunting team that have
abandoned him so this movie talks about how it is simply hard for you to think positively when
something bad happens to you. Whereas, if it was to reinforce the contemporary western culture as
being dominant and positive the Revenant would portray John Fitzgerald as trying to protect Hugh
Glass whilst there are boundaries that come in their way when they are trying to get Hugh Glass to
the hospital.
A movie that reinforces the stereotype is the movie Creed as Apollo Creed is trying to bring back
his father's legacy by boxing for him. This movie is seen as positive as Apollo improves himself in
order for him to battle an opponent deadlier than anyone in the ring
Do you think one of these types of film is more popular with an audience and if so why?
Movies that usually go against the western culture is seen to be more popular as it grips the
audience more and it doesn't leave the audience to cringe or think automatically know what will
happen. Star Wars is an evident example that some Western culture movies are popular as it always
explains that good wins over bad without a doubt. Whereas, movies like the Revenant makes us
wonder what will happen in the movie and it doesn't have any cliché incorporated in the movie at
all.
• If you find that one type of film is shown more in cinemas why do you think is?
American movies are shown more in cinemas as they are linked to different film companies
worldwide. For example, Universal has some businesses with film corporations in the UK. Also,
American movies are more likely to incorporate the Western stereotype which most people enjoy to
watch. Some people wouldn't like to watch a movie that undermines this stereotype as it would be
depressing and vain.
