2. A trend is a general direction
of change. In Canada, a
number of trends in society
and the economy will affect
job opportunities for
newcomers over the years
from 2015 to 2024. One of
these trends is the many
Canadians expected to retire
or leave their work and
careers at age 65.
3. • As the Canadian population gets older, 3.7
million jobs will open due to retirements.
• 70% of job openings over the period from
2015 to 2024 will be due to retirements.
• Most of these jobs will require at least
college-level education or apprenticeship
training.
4. • Jobs requiring high-school level
education will be at high risk of being
lost to technology changes as
computers and machines replace
workers. Jobs requiring college- or
university-level education will be at low
risk.
5. • As Canadians age, health care will be
one of fastest growth areas for jobs.
Health care includes occupations like
home care workers, specialist
physicians, nursing assistants, X-ray
technicians, dentists and laboratory
workers.
7. As a new Canadian, you
probably want to know which
industries and occupations
will offer the best job
opportunities.
8. The chart on the next page shows ten
occupations with the largest projected
number of available jobs over the
period of 2015 to 2024.
9.
10. The number of jobs that become open in the future depends on:
growth in the need for more workers in that occupation, the
number of workers needed today, and how many workers retire
from that occupation each year. As you can see from the chart,
health care workers and truck drivers will be in high demand over
the next decade and beyond.
11. The table on the next
page shows the
occupations expected to
have a shortage or surplus
of workers. Shortage
means there won’t be
enough workers to fill the
available jobs. Surplus
means that there will be
too many people applying
for the available jobs.
