Innovative Bus Stop
A team of three IBT students – Lawrence Ler Shun Yuan, Edwin Ong Chee Yang
and Oswin Ip Kean Hung – supervised by their IBT lecturer, Mdm Papineni Satya
Praveena, developed a prototype of their ‘Commuter-Friendly Bus Stop.’ The
objective of this project was to propose a sophisticated yet flexible design that
improves the functions of a bus-stop.
The proposed design focuses on the commuter’s comfort, and ease of
implementation. The latter can be achieved by using cable supports for the
shelter, and by constructing the bus-stop from modular structures that can be
assembled, taken apart, and stored easily. Thus, if a bus stop had to be
relocated due to road works, the trio’s version could simply be dismantled,
relocated and re-assembled at its new location. Besides this, the commuter-
friendly bus stop also comes with rain shades for improved weather protection,
perforated seats which offer more contact area to seated commuters but which
simultaneously allow easy drainage of rain water which may collect on the seats,
so that commuters stay can dry. The team also incorporated LED lighting which
lasts longer and is more energy-efficient than the fluorescent lighting
conventionally used at bus stops.
For their efforts, the team emerged as the top team from TP at the 10th
LTA-
Polytechnic Exhibition-cum-Presentation of Students’ Final Year Projects, which
was held at Republic Polytechnic. The team’s project was also subsequently
selected for presentation during the CPF Board’s Innovation Week 2008
exhibition at the Board’s HQ at Anson Road, for which it was awarded a Letter of
Commendation
