2. Key Outcomes
• You should be able to use and show an
understanding of direction and bearing.
3. Key Words:
• Direction:
• Direction is the particular way you have to go to get from one place to another. Examples of directions
include north, south, east, and west.
• Bearing:
• Bearing is a more accurate measurement that direction, because it is expressed as an ANGLE.
• Protractor:
• An instrument for measuring angles, typically in the form of a flat semicircle marked with degrees along
the curved edge.
• Compass:
• An instrument containing a magnetized pointer which shows the direction of magnetic north and bearings
from it.
4. Direction
• Direction shows us the path
something takes.
• There are 16 cardinal
directions that you must
know.
• Directions are the words
only!
• They are north, east, south
and west and combinations
of those words.
5. Bearing
• Bearing shows direction given as
degrees.
• It is calculated using a protractor.
• Join the two dots/points where
bearing is required and draw in a
True North line through the point
where the measurement must
happen 'from' (read the question
and find the word 'from’).
• The protractor is placed so that 0° is
pointing to True North and then the
degrees are read off in a clockwise
direction.
