4. INTRODUCTION
4
. Engine is made of many moving parts
. Due to continuous movement of two
metallic surface over each other , there
is wearing of moving parts , generation
of heat and loss of power in the engine
.Lubrication of moving parts is
essential to prevent all these harmful
effects
5. LUBRICATION SYSTEM
5
Lubrication is the action of applying a
substance such as oil or grease to an
engine or component so as to minimize
friction and allow smooth movement.
Lubricating system is a mechanical
system of I.C. combustion engine in
which a pump forces into a engine parts.
6. PURPOSE OF LUBRICATION
6
> To reduce the friction between moving parts.
> To increase the efficiency.
> To minimize the vibrations.
> To reduce the corrosion and carbon deposit.
> To reduce the heat of moving parts.
> To reduce the noise.
> To provide cooling to the engine.
> Working as a cleaning agent.
> Working as a sealing agent.
> Working as a shock absorber.
7. PROTECT
•Thin film prevents metal
to metal contact.
7
•Protect
surfaces
high load
where oil is
“wiped” from the metal.
•Prevent corrosion of
iron,copper, aluminium,
lead and other metals.
8. Why do we use Lubricants ?
Reduce Heat
Reduce Wear
Reduce Noise
A lubricant is any material that has the effect of
reducing friction. By reducing friction, we
reduce heat, noise and most importantly wear.

The duties of the lubricant in an engine are
many and varied in scope . The lubricant is
called upon to control the following -:
1.Friction between the components and metal
to metal contact.
2.Overheating of the components .
3.Wear of the components
4.Corrosion
5.Carbon deposits
12. Advantage:
Simplicity and Low cost as it does not
require an oil pump, filter, etc.
Disadvantages:
Cause heavy exhaust smoke due to burning
of lubricating oil
Forms deposit on piston crown and exhaust
port which affect engine efficiency.
