2. History
St. Brendan’s is a Roman
Catholic Church that is located
in Los Angeles, Ca. Its Gothic
Revival style structure was built
in 1927. This church was not
only used for mass but also in
major movie production such as
“ War of the Worlds.”
This church was
named after St.
Brendan who was
know for his voyages. He was a monk born is Tralee, Ireland.
Saint Brendan is the patron of sailors and traveler.
3. Inside St. Brendan’s
This is the inside of the church. On the wall there is a crucifix which is common for a
Catholic church. For Catholics this cross represents the burden of sins that Jesus Christ
carried on his way to death. It signifies the pain and suffering that Christ have done for
them. The “INRI” are initials for the Latin title, “LesvsNazarenvs Rex Ivdaeorvm.” This
means “Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews.” Pontius Pilate had given him this title.
4. Here are stained
glass window with
the images of
Jesus and some of
his disciples.
Stained glass
windows are very
common in Catholic
churches always
depicting moments
of biblical history.
This keeps
members in
memory of what
Christ has done for
them.
5. This is where the scripture of the Bible is
read, by either people of the church or by
the priest. All the members of the church
have copies of the book that is read here
along the booths.
6. Places at the
foot of a statue
are prayer
candles. These
candles are lit by
people who
requested
prayers for a
particular
intention.
Catholic’s
believe that as
long as the
candle is lit the
prayer continues
to be offered to
the saint and be
heard by Christ.
7. This is an altar which is use for the
offering of the Eucharistic Sacrifice. If
signifies the table of the Lord. Here the
priest prays and breaks the bread and
drinks wine. Bread meaning the body of
Christ and the wine meaning the blood
of Christ.
8. Here is a structure with holy water in it. The water is considered to be holy because it is blessed
by the priest. This is a reminder of baptism. When Catholic’s enter and leave the church they
come here and dip their fingers. With the dipped finger they make a sign of the cross along their
body. Some Catholic believe this water to bring healing.
9. Outside of St. Brendan’s
Here is a Statue of the Virgin
Mary. The Virgin Mary has a very
important place in Catholicism.
To Catholics, the Virgin Mary is
said to be the mother of God.
She is what every Catholic
women looks up to. She was the
most devoted person to Jesus
Christ. Many Catholics come
here to pray to her because they
think she’s the closet to God so
therefore he will surely get their
prayers. Being the central role
in the Roman Catholic Church
she has her own prayer that’s
called the “Hail Mary Prayer”
which Catholics prayer every
day.
