1. Gulf Oil Crisis 2010:A Timeline A student’s approach to problem solving, web publishing, and research on the Internet Amanda Deising IDT 7064 Web-Enhanced Mini Lesson Plan
2. Introduction Students will work in groups of 3-4 and use active learning processes by locating and evaluating information on the internet, using the internet for problem solving, and publishing their final product to the internet. This lesson uses the collaborative learning, the inquiry based model, as well as problem-based learning methods. *Note…State Curriculum standards website down at time of creation… Can be found at Social Studies curriculum standards
3. Task Students will create a timeline of the Gulf Oil Crisis of 2010. The timeline must include at least 10 points of interest. Students will also develop problem-solving methods that they will then submit to the oil company.
4. Process for Creating Timelines Stage 1: Selection of Timeline Events : Students will work in small groups, to identify what they consider to be the 10 most significant events within the Gulf Oil Crisis of 2010. They will use these 10 events to create their timeline. They may use 1-2 personal experiences if applicable (i.e.-how a vacation was affected). They need to use research processes from the internet to discover these 10 events. Adding links to sites, video, or sounds if highly recommended. Stage 2: Brainstorm Timeline Events: The teacher asks students to contribute their ideas to a whole-class discussion. This will encourage some debate, discussion and reflection. Students may feed off of each other during this discussion but each group will be required to provide a list of resources. (This list is not to be shared with members outside of the group as each group needs to develop their own and there should be a variety of resources) Stage 3: Depiction of Timeline Events: Students then open the ClassTools Timeline Template and plot their chosen events into it. They should aim not simply to describe "what happens" but "why it is significant"
5. Problem Solving Assignment Students will also work together using problem solving techniques to submit a proposal to the oil company for cleaning up the Gulf, stopping the leak, or assisting animals or residents affected by the spill. BP Global | BP Or students may develop a plan of action for bringing tourism back to the areas affected, then submit their action plan to the local chambers of commerce for the area chosen. Pensacola Beach Orange Beach, AL Students will use research tools and internet sites to discover ideas and then be required to make the ideas reflective of the group by adding their own thoughts and actions.
