3. TIPS FOR DEMOREEL
Evidence of original design abilities : include conceptual
sketches and storyboards, as well as the finished piece, to
illustrate the design process on at least one of your samples.
Visual story-telling ability
Modeling strengths: Complex objects, both organic
(monsters, people) and inorganic (space hardware,
architecture)
Texture mapping and attention to detail: scanned
texture maps can be very cool, but make sure you show your
ability to make-do from scratch, using anything like Fractal
Painter, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator etc.
Realistic Set Design: build a complete environment where
architecture and effective lighting allow the viewer to
4. TIPS FOR DEMOREEL
Wow Factor: There should be one or two pieces that really
stand out in their originality, execution and artistic
composition
Craftsmanship: Not all pieces need to be ready-to-
broadcast or print quality, but an example of one highly-
polished project will greatly help in demonstrating your
ability to produce "finished" artwork.
Animation ability: human figures performing a simple,
natural and fluid action are extremely desirable. Choose an
action that would NOT be "Humans and Animals in Motion."
Now, if you really want to impress, think "Jackie Chan."
Resume: organize it so it's easy to scan at a glance. They're
more interested in what's so special about you than in what
schools you've attended. If you have extensive technical
experience, stress that. If it's artistic experience, stress that.
5. TIPS FOR DEMOREEL
Important : Along with your demo reel, enclose a sheet
that describes what is contained in your reel. With what
application is each piece done? Was it a group project? Did
you build the mesh yourself, or use a commercially available
one? How much time did each one take to complete? This is
INVALUABLE information to them.
Nobody cares about music/soundtrack. We turn off the
sound. But sometimes we listen to it and get really annoyed
if we don't like your taste in music. Keep it basic or leave it
off.
Include a title card at the beginning and end with your
name, address, phone, and email. Including the position
you're looking for is not a bad idea, either. The opening one
doesn't need to be on too long, but the end one should last
for a while. Don't make people desperately pause to get your
email address
6. DEMO REEL
MODELLING
Do not hide every shot in really dark lighting so that we
can't see anything. You're applying for a job as a modeler,
not a bad lighter.
Don't pretend that you are an animator and try animating
your model so that is just ends up looking epileptic. If you
do that, then not only can we not see your model but we
also know that we're not going to forward your reel to the
animators.
Build some cool stuff, render it sensibly - maybe even light
it well - and show it off. Give us a few seconds per model
to let our eyes understand the image. And you probably
want to show several kinds of models. Organic, living
shapes. Hard edged, manufactured objects.
7. LIGHTING ARTIST
Still frames that demonstrate a solid understanding of how
to set a mood and direct the eye through the use of
various types of contrast (especially value, color, and
depth of field) within a highly photo-realistic style.
Within that photo-realistic style, you should demonstrate
your knowledge of how light interacts with different types
of materials, the qualities and complexities of realistic
textures, how the position and intensity of lights affect
mood and believability, and color theory and harmony.
Integrate a fairly complex digital object into a live-action
plate and create an excellent PHOTO REALISTIC look.
Photo-realism remains the most commonly asked-for look,
and a standard by which most portfolios are judged.

8. CHARACTER ANIMATOR
Create a story. Compel your audience. Make them laugh
or make them cry, but evoke some kind of emotion or
response.
Demonstrated acting skills are essential - walk cycles and
life drawings are not sufficient. Lip-synching examples are
also helpful. Character animators should also show a
diversity of style, ranging from highly realistic motion to a
more exaggerated "cartoony" style.
Demo reel should showcase application of the mechanics
of animation (such as squash-and-stretch, overlapping
action, anticipation, follow-through, weight, timing, etc.),
as well as strong acting skills that will enable you to create
memorable and unique personalities

9. COMPOSITORS
Show your ability to solve complex compositing problems,
such as dirty blue screens, suppressing unwanted
highlights in areas to receive digital shadows, intricate
morphs, etc.
BREAKDOWNS : It is helpful to include shots with
"before" and "after" versions or more explicit layer build-
ups.
Demo reel must include integrating separate live-action
and computer-generated elements, blue/green screen
shots; balancing and creating shadow elements, Colour
Correction of shots for final output wire, rig removal,
morphs, background replacement; day-for-night / dry-for-
wet

10. MATCH MOVING / MOTION TRACKERS
Meticulously and accurately animated virtual camera
motion and parameters to match to live-action camera
movement.
Demonstrate a solid understanding of basic principles of
3D graphics, especially linear perspective and other
properties of 3D space, the properties of camera
parameters such as focus and focal length, 3D modeling
and deformation tools, local coordinate versus world
coordinate space, 3D hierarchies, matrices, rotations,
translations, scale, etc.
Ability to distinguish between pan vs dolly, zoom vs truck-
in from the live-action plates alone. Besides cameras,
Trackers will also track moving objects within a shot.
