Admissions
• Over 171 million cinema tickets were sold in the UK in 2011, which was
a 1.4% increase on the 2010 admissions figure. The 2011 figure was
the third highest total of the last decade and maintains the plateau in
admissions which has been apparent since 2002.
• The success of The King’s Speech and other awards season contenders
such as Black Swan contributed to an increase in admissions in January
2011 compared with the same month in 2010. It was February’s top
performing title and helped to boost the month’s admissions by 16%
compared with 2010. The sharpest drops in attendances were
recorded in March and April when admissions fell by 24% compared to
the same months in 2010, partly due to the lack of a breakout hit such
as 2010’s Alice in Wonderland and unreasonably warm weather in
April 2011.
The figure below puts UK admissions in a longer term perspective. Along with the USA
and other western European countries, cinema-going in the UK declined sharply in the
post-war era as incomes rose and new leisure activities became available. As cinema
admissions fell, so did the supply of screens which led to further falling demand and
more cinema closures.
Multiplex Cinemas were introduced to the UK in 1985 reversed the trend and saw
admissions returning to levels. Admissions in 2011 were the third highest in the past
40 years.
Holly Wrench
Harry potter and the deathly hallows:
part 2 was at the top of the box office
chart making £72 million in the box

box office charts four weeks in 2011.

UK.
In 2nd and 3rd place were the

speech just toped the inbetweeners
movie but earning 45.68million.

Successful British films: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows
Part 2
& The Kings Speech
This film was the best performing UK film at the worldwide box
office, earning over $1.3 Billion in 2011. In Europe Harry Potter
and the Deathly Hallows part 2 was also the top UK Film; with
over 25 million admissions. And over 12 million tickets were sold
across Europe for the King’s Speech, this film was the highest
ranked UK independent film, earning over $414 million.
Studio backed British Films.
Studio Backed is the term used when US major film studios are
behind the distribution of UK films, these movies are usually
included with British cast, crew, and British directors. This helps
promote British film into Hollywood, which can greatly increase
their advertisement and gives them considerably more funding.
Pinewood Studios
Pinewood studios are films where movies such as James Bond and Harry
Potter were filmed, aswell as international movie Captain America: The First
Avenger, and Les Miserables, all James Bond movies are filmed here, as a part
of tradition and keeping the filming at home. Pinewood Studios are one of
the most famous British filming studios globally, they won a BAFTA award for
their outstanding British Contribution to Cinema in 2009. Pinewood is
familiarly recognised because of their contributions to British film and
international film.

Distribution

What is film distribution?
• The distribution of a film is the
process through which a movie is
made available to watch for an
audience by a film distributor.
• There are various ways in which
films are distributed:
1. Promotionadvertising
2. Marketing
3. Released through cinemas or DVD
Film Distribution
• Film Distribution in the UK is dominated by a very few big
companies (Warner Bros, Walt Disney) but a large number of
smaller companies distribute just as many.
Facts
• Opening weekends represented 29% of the total box office.
• nThe estimated total advertising spend for UK films in 2011
was £197 millio, whereas UK independent films was under
£0.2 million.
• Since 2009 there has been a 1.4% increase in film
advertising.
• Weekdays accounted for 42% of the box office.
There is a correlation between the percentage of market share and the Box Office gross, the
higher market share you have the more box office gross you make. The leading distributor was
Warner Bros which released the top earning films of 2011: Harry Potter and the Deathly
Hallows, The Hangover Part 2 and Sherlock Holmes. The fully integrated company stands at the
forefront of every aspect of the entertainment industry from feature film, television and home
entertainment production and worldwide distribution to DVD and Blu-ray, digital distribution,
animation and broadcasting.
In second place is Paramount whose highest earning films were The Adventures of Tintin and
Mission Impossible.

Release Costs
• The opening weekend is crucial to the success of the film. This is
particularly true at high budget productions aimed at mass audiences.
• Distributors invest heavily in advertising in order to raise a films profile
across all media.
• From this graph you can see that the Kings Speech was in cinemas for 27
weeks and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows remained in cinemas
for 17 weeks. The Kings Speech gradually picked up popularity by BAFTA
awards, Oscars and good word of mouth.

The sharpest drops in attendances were recorded in March and April when admissions fell by 24% compared to the same months in 2010, partly due to the lack of a breakout hit such as 2010’s Alice in Wonderland and unreasonably warm weather in April 2011.
  • 10. The figure below puts UK admissions in a longer term perspective. Along with the USA and other western European countries, cinema-going in the UK declined sharply in the post-war era as incomes rose and new leisure activities became available. Multiplex Cinemas were introduced to the UK in 1985 reversed the trend and saw admissions returning to levels. Admissions in 2011 were the third highest in the past 40 years.
