9. Admissions
• Over 171 million cinema tickets were sold in the UK in 2011, which was
a 1.4% increase on the 2010 admissions figure. The 2011 figure was
the third highest total of the last decade and maintains the plateau in
admissions which has been apparent since 2002.
• The success of The King’s Speech and other awards season contenders
such as Black Swan contributed to an increase in admissions in January
2011 compared with the same month in 2010. It was February’s top
performing title and helped to boost the month’s admissions by 16%
compared with 2010. The sharpest drops in attendances were
recorded in March and April when admissions fell by 24% compared to
the same months in 2010, partly due to the lack of a breakout hit such
as 2010’s Alice in Wonderland and unreasonably warm weather in
April 2011.
10. The figure below puts UK admissions in a longer term perspective. Along with the USA
and other western European countries, cinema-going in the UK declined sharply in the
post-war era as incomes rose and new leisure activities became available. As cinema
admissions fell, so did the supply of screens which led to further falling demand and
more cinema closures.
Multiplex Cinemas were introduced to the UK in 1985 reversed the trend and saw
admissions returning to levels. Admissions in 2011 were the third highest in the past
40 years.
13. Harry potter and the deathly hallows:
part 2 was at the top of the box office
chart making £72 million in the box
office. This followed the previous
films Avatar in 2009 and Toy Story 3
in 2010.
This film also topped the weekend
box office charts four weeks in 2011.
The Third highest
earning film in the
UK.
In 2nd and 3rd place were the
independent films the kings speech
and the inbetweeners movie. Both
Earning £45million but the kings
speech just toped the inbetweeners
movie but earning 45.68million.

These are all different types of independent UK films

20 films.

Story was the top 3D film generated 72% of its total £D
