Research Experience (Employment Record)
Indian Institute of Rice Research, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad 500 030
Senior Research Fellow Nov. 2009 - till date
Tasks and Accomplishments:
Project-1: Development of Biotic Stress resistant in Rice through Marker Assisted
Breeding:
1. Introgression of genes conferring durable resistance to two distractive diseases
viz., bacterial blight and blast, two pests viz., gall midge and brown plant hopper
into the genetic background of elite rice variety Akshyadhan and hybrid parental
lines viz., DRR 17B and RPHR-1005 through marker-assisted backcross
breeding.
2. Evaluation of gene introgressed lines for disease and Insect resistance trough
controlled conditions and multi-location trials
3. Evaluation of agro-morphological characters of the introgression lines through
filed trials by pedigree breeding method.
Project-2: Marker-assisted introgression of Pup1 into elite rice varieties:
1. Introgression of Pup1 QTL from the donor genotype (Rasi, Vandana, Swarna and
Kasalath) into the genetic background of elite susceptible rice varieties (Improved
Samba Mahsuri, MTU1010 and IR64) susceptible to low soil-P through marker-
assisted backcross breeding.
2. Evaluation of the improved breeding derived lines for soil P uptake and low P
tolerance in field conditions.
Project-3: Functional characterization of novel bacterial blight resistance genes
from wild relatives of Oryza spp.
1. Fine mapping of Xa33 gene on chromosome 7 (O. nivara accession
IRGC105170).
2. Functional characterization of the putative candidate genes for Xa33.
3. Marker-assisted pyramiding of Xa33, Xa21 and xa13 in Samba Mahsuri
Project-4: Development of indica rice lines with β carotene with endosperm through
marker assisted gene introgression and their evolution
1. GR-2R event-II (Back ground of IR36 and IR64) crossed with popular varieties
ISM and MTU1010 to improve endospermic accumulation of β-carotene.
Project-5: Genomic and transcriptomic analysis of rice hybrids and their parental
lines in relation to heterosis.
1. Identified and validated a set of hybrids for positive and negative heterosis
through historical data based on grain yield.
2. Conducted parental polymorphism survey using SSR markers selected hybrids
and their parental lines and this data is correlated with grain yield heterosis and
per day productivity heterosis.
3. RNA has been isolated and sent for expression analysis at three key development
stages and correlate the transcript data with per day grain yield heterosis data to
predict heterosis by developing SNPs or expression array based assay.
Project-6: Molecular breeding for improvement of tolerance to biotic and abiotic
stresses, yield and quality traits in crops
1. Validation of molecular markers linked to major genes/QTLs governing
resistance /tolerance to various biotic and abiotic stresses, yield and quality traits
in crops.
2. Introgression of genes/QTLs governing resistance/tolerance to biotic and
abiotic stresses yield and quality traits into popular cultivars use marker assisted
backcross breeding approach.
3. Assessment of pyramided lines for their reaction to biotic and abiotic stresses.
Other Activities:
1. Involved in improvement of popular restorer line KMR3R for Bacterial blight
resistance.
2. Involved in improvement of popular maintainer line IR58025B for Bacterial
blight and blast resistance.
