UNION AND ITS
OBJECTIVES
Introduction: Unions
• Unions are the organizations of workers acting collectively to protect and promote their mutual interests through
collective bargaining..
• The most significant impact of unions on HRM is its influence on shaping HRM policies.
• A company develops its policies based on efficiency, but when a union is formed, management is almost forced to
make policies according to the workers preferences.
1. Improve The Living Standards
• To secure and improve the living standards and economic status of its
employees.
• A union’s main objective is to increase it’s member’s living standards.
• They may raise their voice for a raise if they feel that the organization is
unjust in giving salaries.
• They may also ask for some security such as health care and a decent pay
raise.
2.Job Security
• To guarantee individual security from threats such as market fluctuations, technological change or
management decisions
• A union also demands a job security for it’s members from the threats such as:
1. Market fluctuations.
2. Technological change
3. Management decisions
3. Power relations
• To influence power relations in the social system in ways that favor and do not threaten union goals
and gains.
• Power relationship is the relationship in which one party has the ability to cause other to take certain
actions.
• It is also an objective of unions to influence power relations that will help them in their cause.
• It is necessary that power relations are influenced so that the unions can make the management fulfill
their demands.
4. Welfare for everyone
• To advance a welfare of all those who work for a living whether members of
unions or not.
• The union demands that whether the members are of unions or not they
must also receive the necessities that a union demands for itself.
5. Protection against sudden and unaccountable
policies
• To create mechanisms to guard against the random and unaccountable or
sudden policies.
• A union’s objective is that the management should not make sudden policies
that may affect it’s employees in a way that their jobs become unsecure for
them.
