3. Magazine Development - Text
To the left is the first pass of my magazine article. In a
revision to this piece I changed a great deal of
elements that allowed to document to be clearer and
more full, leaving less empty space behind. I updated
the size of the text and changed the colour so that it
was much more visible against the dark background.
In my final piece I have also added drop capitals,
colour matched to my header image, to improve
visibility and help build a theme for the page that fits
in with the gothic styling found throughout the
magazine, instead of just having plain text.
4. Magazine Development - Sidebar
I refined the sidebar of my article for my final version,
increasing the visibility of the text with a bright
colour and increasing the size, and adding a border
around the text that helped to contain the content
and make it look much more uniform. I also extended
the sidebar to the bottom of the page in my final
piece, allowing me to add back some entries on the
timeline that were deleted in the draft because of the
lack of space.
At the top of the sidebar in the final version, I have
added Shelter’s artwork that matches the edges of
the sidebar, which helps to increase the connotation
of the article. The original version lacks such an
inclusion and simply has the header image and
heading expand over the sidebar.
5. Magazine Development - Details
The original draft has some small touches such as a sales
tag at the end of the article, but many of them remain
undeveloped and not as colourful as the final piece,
remaining in the dark and hard to read font.
The draft piece did contain a page number at the bottom
but it looked out of place thanks to it being in a colour
that wasn’t used anywhere else in the article. The rest of
the footer was left blank. Some of the copy was also
uneven and the article was missing several crucial
guidelines, meaning that text was not aligned and started
at random intervals. In the final edition I added a lot
more detail to the various empty
spaces that dotted the articles,
such as a large tagline at the
bottom of the page that added
some more exposition to the
article and the name of the
magazine, and a pull quote in the
middle of the article. I colour
matched lots of different elements
so that the article as a whole felt
much more refined and worked
together in terms of aesthetics.
