2. CONCEPT
Concept music videos usually have no sort of storyline nor do they
highlight the meaning of the lyrics.
It is very interpretive and could hold endless meanings therefore
leaving it to the audience to make a personal judgment on what they
see.
There are a lot of symbols and montages to suggest mood and
depict certain emotions
EXAMPLE OF CONCEPT MUSIC VIDEOS: ‘take care’- Rihanna & Drake
3. PERFORMANCE
Performance videos are very much centred on the artist/ band and them
singing their song.
Watching the artist to simply or creatively perform is the best way an
artist can promote their persona and gain likeability.
This style is probably the most cheapest because it mainly consists of the
artist singing therefore doesn’t need special effects and expensive
features to make it any more interesting.
EXAMPLE OF A PERFROMANCE VIDEO: ‘Someone like you’- Adele
4. NARRATIVE
Narrative videos are when there is a story being told to reflect the meaning or
purpose of the song itself.
The consists of actors or the artist themselves acting out the story and this means
micro features including camera shots and mis-en-scene are key.
If the artist features within the narrative video, they are likely to combine it with a
performance so some shots consist of the artist singing the lyrics and then cut
back to the narrative part.
EXAMPLE OF NARRATIVE: ‘Love Story’- Taylor Swift
5. OTHER STYLES OF VIDEOS..
SURREALISTIC- Very abstract, could be a blend of live footage and animation.
They appear to be very fantasised or vision-like.
ANIMATION- usually entirely animated and surreal. Entirely digital and many
props aren’t needed including props and venues.
PARODY- a comedic version of well known music videos. The lyrics usually differ
but the style and rhythm stay the same.
