AUGMENTED REALITY

the state of things as they
are, rather than as they are
imagined to be
The basic idea of augmented reality is to overlay images, graphics, and audio
and other intelligence enhancements from a virtual world over a real
environment in real time hence enhancing a person’s image of the real
world. This is done with the help of computing systems which focus on
adding information to the user’s sensory perceptions using various methods.
it aims at bringing the virtual world concepts into reality instead of placing
the user into the virtual world and supplements the real world with virtual
(computer generated) objects that appear to co-exist in the same space as
the real world .

INTRODUCTION
Augmented Reality 2017-2018
Augment Reality is to grow the user’s idea of and interaction with the real
world by augmenting the real world with 3D virtual objects that appear to
exist in the same space as the real environment. Various technologies like
virtual reality, augmented reality, augmented virtuality, sixth sense
technology, computer graphics and different sensors work together, to
create a world of Mixed Reality where virtual objects are superimposed
upon the real life environment with the capability of interaction with the
real world objects. AR or virtual reality (VR) technologies have grabbed the
eyes of researchers for quite some time now. AR and virtual reality are
often confused with one another, where as in reality, they overlap each
other and somewhere work together.
THE REAL WORLD THE VIRTUAL WORLD
Where you
think you are
Where you
truly exist…
VIRTUAL REALITY is seeing an imaginary computer simulated world
through ones eyes which may also include the senses of feeling, smelling,
tasting and hearing without the persons actual presence in the simulated
world.
It serves as a digital space where the users movements are tracked using
motion sensing devices, based on his/her surroundings to generate
relevant responses for various senses through a set of devices such as VR
headsets, Speakers, stimulators etc.

AR VS VR
1. Virtual reality means generating such
an environment within the computer
that the user can interact with and get
immersed in.
2. This world exists only in the digital
land.
3. VR artificially replicates or recreates
the real time world environment by
using computer generated graphics.
The hearing and vision are enhanced in
such that the user feels he is actually
experiencing the digital environment.
1. Augmented reality enhances the reality
by projecting or displaying digital
images and sounds into it rather than
replacing it.
2. It takes place in the real time
environment of the present world
3. Augmented Reality places the virtual
objects in the real environment in real
time which we can see through the
different display objects and turns the
environment around us into a digital
interface.

MIXED REALITY is the merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new
environments and visualizations where physical and digital objects co-exist
and interact in real time. Mixed reality takes place not only in the physical
world or the virtual world, it is a mix of virtual world and reality which
encompasses both augmented reality and augmented virtuality.

IMPLEMENTATION
Augmented Reality 2017-2018
An efficient AR device is made by combining the basic components such as display units,
tracking module, computer or other portable devices, different scanning algorithms, etc.
The Basic Characteristics of an AR device are:
1. Input:
It considers the various sensors of the device (camera, gyroscope, microphone, GPS), as
well as anycompanion device.
2. Processing:
It determines the type of information that is going to render in the screen displayed to
the user. In order to do that it may require access stored locally in the device or in a
remote database.
3. Output:
It projects its output to the screen of the device together with the current view of the
user hence augmenting the reality of the user.

Augment Reality is an application used in real time, hence portability is
the key to experiencing its full potential, as such it is most widely
implemented using portable devices such as smartphones and smart
glasses (Google glass, Microsoft Holo lens, magic leap light wear etc.)
AR is implemented in such devices as show in the figure below

The Different Types of AR:
1. Marker-based AR
It requires a special visual object and a camera to scan it. It may be
anything, from a printed QR code to special signs. The AR device also
calculates the position and orientation of a marker to position the
content, in some cases. Thus, a marker initiates digital animations for
users to view, and so images in a magazine may turn into 3D models.
2. Markerless AR
It utilizes a GPS, a compass, a gyroscope and an accelerometer to
provide data based on user’s location. This data then determines what
AR content you find or get in a certain area. With availability of
smartphones this type of AR typically produces maps and directions,
nearby businesses info. Applications include events and information,
business ads pop-ups, navigation support. ex. Pokemon GO.

07-May-18 Department of CSE, Vemana IT 16
3. Projection-based AR.
Projecting synthetic light to physical surfaces, and in some cases allows
to interact with it. These are the holograms we have all seen in sci-fi
movies like Avatar, Iron Man etc. It detects user interaction with a
projection by its alterations.
4. Superimposition-based AR.
Replaces the original view with an augmented, fully or partially. Object
recognition plays a key role, without it the whole concept is simply
impossible. The example of superimposed augmented reality is IKEA
Catalogue app, that allows users to place virtual items of their
furniture catalogue in their rooms.

Augmented Reality 2017-2018
 AR-Augmented Reality Technology was Deployed as a demo in multiple fields
such as Education, Entertainment, Medical, Archeology and Engineering.
 In Education it was used to display 3d objects and real time information of real
world objects, in Medical and engineering it was used to obtain details on the
equipment and other factors pertaining to the fields, AR was used in many
gaming applications such as Ingress and Pokemon GO.
 It was observed that the experience offered by the AR technology in these
fields helped enormously in acquiring quick relevant data and information. It
was stated that AR provides a detailed interface for real world objects.
 It is also noted that although AR has been deployed widely in various
applications, the general public is not aware of the technology and often
confuse it with Virtual Reality and most of the mainstream AR devices like the
wearable Google glasses are found to be a social hindrance apart from its
unique and not very fashion friendly appearance.

FUTURE OF AUGMENTED REALITY
 The modern era of AR Technology has just barely begun. AR has
significantly improved as years have passed by and has seen inspiration
from many fictional representations.
 As a result the years 2018 and later are expected to provide is new
improvements and heights for AR technology such as
 The Microsoft HOLO lens
 The Magic leap Technology
 Mobile AR Technology
 The Heads-up display Technology
 AR Contact Lenses
 AR Ear buds
 The Future of AR will be focused on nullifying its common and long
plaguing limitations and also on Big Data, IoT and AI complimented AR
technologies.
Augmented Reality 2017-2018
The AR technology's limitations include:
1. Accuracy of GPS and positioning methods and tracking methods
At times the AR device may not be able to triangulate the exact location of an
object hence causing issues in efficiency and mapping of virtual objects which
are based on patterns, anchors and markers. This can be corrected by
developing better Hardware(camera, sensors) and algorithms for AR
functionality.
2. Information overload
This situation arrives when there exist too many objects in the field of view that
there is not enough space to show info on each object hence resulting in a
clutter, this is being corrected by implementing object focus technology in the
future
3. Privacy concerns
The informative interface of AR fetches data without an conformation and
hence can cause a privacy issue. Steps are being taken to Reduce this to the
minimal without affecting the functionality of the AR technology.
4. Insufficient Information
This occurs due to lack of relevant information on an object in the AR database.
The databases used for AR technology will be updated to keep up with the
developing society.

CONCLUSION
Augmented Reality 2017-2018
The information about the AR and its components such as the display,
tracking and orientation, software systems and different algorithms used,
the study of different types of AR rise in popularity of MAR(mobile AR), a
peak into its Future and the noticeable rise in Technological fields such as
Big Data, AI and IoT which AR benefits from clarifies that Augmented
reality is likely to worm its way into our daily lives more and more in the
21st century. Thanks to technologies such as augmented reality, the way
we work with computing devices and think about the partition between
digital and analogue realism is expected to transform vitally.
A conclusion can be made stating that there is a lot more to research upon
and implement in this technology and it has a long way to go.

Input: It considers the various sensors of the device (camera, gyroscope, microphone, GPS), as well as anycompanion device. 2. Processing: It determines the type of information that is going to render in the screen displayed to the user. In order to do that it may require access stored locally in the device or in a remote database. 3. Output: It projects its output to the screen of the device together with the current view of the user hence augmenting the reality of the user.

  • 15. 07-May-18 Department of CSE, Vemana IT 15 The Different Types of AR: 1. Marker-based AR It requires a special visual object and a camera to scan it. It may be anything, from a printed QR code to special signs. The AR device also calculates the position and orientation of a marker to position the content, in some cases. Thus, a marker initiates digital animations for users to view, and so images in a magazine may turn into 3D models. 2. Markerless AR It utilizes a GPS, a compass, a gyroscope and an accelerometer to provide data based on user’s location. This data then determines what AR content you find or get in a certain area. With availability of smartphones this type of AR typically produces maps and directions, nearby businesses info. Applications include events and information, business ads pop-ups, navigation support. ex. Pokemon GO. Augmented Reality 2017-2018
  • 16. 07-May-18 Department of CSE, Vemana IT 16 3. Projection-based AR. Projecting synthetic light to physical surfaces, and in some cases allows to interact with it. These are the holograms we have all seen in sci-fi movies like Avatar, Iron Man etc. It detects user interaction with a projection by its alterations. 4. Superimposition-based AR. Replaces the original view with an augmented, fully or partially. Object recognition plays a key role, without it the whole concept is simply impossible. The example of superimposed augmented reality is IKEA Catalogue app, that allows users to place virtual items of their furniture catalogue in their rooms. Augmented Reality 2017-2018

Accuracy of GPS and positioning methods and tracking methods At times the AR device may not be able to triangulate the exact location of an object hence causing issues in efficiency and mapping of virtual objects which are based on patterns, anchors and markers. This can be corrected by developing better Hardware(camera, sensors) and algorithms for AR functionality. 2. Information overload This situation arrives when there exist too many objects in the field of view that there is not enough space to show info on each object hence resulting in a clutter, this is being corrected by implementing object focus technology in the future 3. Privacy concerns The informative interface of AR fetches data without an conformation and hence can cause a privacy issue. Steps are being taken to Reduce this to the minimal without affecting the functionality of the AR technology. 4. Insufficient Information This occurs due to lack of relevant information on an object in the AR database. The databases used for AR technology will be updated to keep up with the developing society. 07-May-18 Department of CSE, Vemana IT 20 Augmented Reality 2017-2018
