Acknowledgement
I would like to thank the IBMS students for the trust they put in me by giving me the amount of money, and
also for supporting me to spend the money to a good cause.
I would also like to thank Mr. Medhurst who supported the idea.
This work motivated me to start an NGO in Pakistan to try and put a smile on the face of those who really
need it.
In future I would need your prayers and support to motivate me.
Thank you and enjoy reading the report.
Task: Voluntary work in Pakistan
Place: Pakistan
Date: 11-01-2012
Material used: 1st
amount €70-, money collected from the Multicultural event of 14th
December. 2nd
Amount € 2, 50-, collected in the charity box.
From the 1st
amount I bought 15 bags of wheat and 15 packets of butter/oil.
The 2nd
amount I donated to a safety guard in my street who stayed awake whole night for the safety of the
people living in my street and who stayed outside in the cold weather without wearing any warm clothes. He
could buy some shawlfrom that money or anything he or his family needs.
Activities done:Together with my cousin (Murad) and brother (Naoman) we went to buy 15 bags of wheat
and 15 packets of butter/oil. Because these are the basic needs of needy people in Pakistan, we found it
important to provide these people of that what they needed the most.
The weather was cold during the mornings and nights. People with a proper shelter, a roof and all the basic
needs complained about the weather. And on the other hand you had these people. Who had nothing, but a
small tent in which they live with their big families?
When we entered the place with the car of Murad, we saw the people living in tents made out of piece of
clothes. The people came outside their tents to see who arrived at their place. In the photo below you can see
my cousin in the middle who brought me to this place near his house.
This is the shelter of these people, made out of cloth, plastic and all other materials which cannot protect them
from the cold weather.
Here you can see the surrounding of these people. And the donkey is their way of earning money. Through
the donkey the head of one family does his work, by collecting stuff and selling it by putting it on the car
which is connected to the donkey. In the time where cars and public transport is a normal way of travelling,
there still live people who travel through donkeys. It’s a pity and it really hurt me to see them living in such a
way.
After entering the place Murad called a man who looked as the head of one of the families and looked quite
sophisticated. We explained him what we came to do there and gave him the permission to take out a bag of
wheat and a packet of butter/oil for his family out of the car. The guy told us about another family who lived
with him, so he called the head of the other family and did the same. Murad told him to call out some more
people who lived near,so those people came and took out some packets and bags one by one.
Down you can see the man whom we approached at first. He told me the names of the people who already
had collected their bags and packets and the names of the people who were still left to be given some bags and
packets.
Here you can see people collecting their bags and packets.
After that the people gathered together and I started to write down their names. As some people did not get a
bag and packet,I noted down their names and told them that there were still 3 bags and packets left in the
shop.
Competencies:
I used the competencies of listening. I listened to the people and tried to observe what they are saying.
Besides that I tried to observe the place and their surroundings. I can say that the improvement I made was
having patience. I did not talk much but listened more, because I knew that these people are facing big
problems and I knew that if they are asking for more bags and packets that they are asking it because they
really need it.
Reflection:
On 14th
December 2011 IBMS first year organized a multicultural event. To organize the event there was
money needed for decoration, promotion, food and drinks. Every student was requested to provide €10-, each.
From the money collected there was a leftover of €70-,. I discussed with some fellow students and with Mr.
Medhurst if we could use the leftover for a small drink together. But I got the suggestion to use that money
for those who need it more. Besides the money left over, I had a small amount of €2, 50-, collected in two
charity boxes which I placed on two tables at the Event. I explained on a leaflet, which I placed with the
charity boxes, what was going to happen with the money collected and promised to make a report about it.
The part which went well:
At the event: The charity boxes were placed on a place where all visitors could see it.
At the voluntary work: the people who came to collect their bags and packets were honest and they took one
each instead of taking it all. At the end they were honest about who took one and who did not.
The part which could be better:
At the event: I could have placed more charity boxes on severalplaces. And they were quite small, but it
would have been difficult to keep an eye on the boxes that is why I placed only two at the same location but
different tables.
At the voluntary work:
Together with Murad I discussed that we should have noted down the names first and after that we should
have provided the people with the bags and packets. So this will be an improvement for the next time which
we will take into consideration.
