Some Pros and Cons of OER
2. Some Upsides to OER
● The list of open resources grows daily, filling more niches and educational needs.
● Freedom to create content around a class instead of the other way around.
● These resources being free is another step towards making higher education accessible by
all communities.
● A straightforward licensure system for content creators.
● Content can be easily updated and revised to reflect changes in the field and fix errors that
made it past proof.
3. Some Downsides to OER
● OER is relatively new; as such, there is no standard process for quality control.
● OER can easily become out of date without guaranteed funding for maintaining these
resources.
● There is no universal repository for OER, or even a catalog of all OER repositories.
● Even with a universal OER repository, the sea of options would be overwhelming to wade
through.
● The non-revocable nature of Creative Commons licenses may dissuade some creators.
