3. Maybe Jack couldn’t use those beans to trade for goods
and services today. But he could a long time ago! People
used trade or “barter” to exchange for goods and
services. In fact cows were used as one of the first and
oldest forms of money. People also used grain and other
vegetable plant products, like beans as money.

4. Another old form of money came from the sea. There is
evidence that cowrie shells were used in China and Africa.
They are found in the shallow waters of the Pacific and
Indian Oceans. Native Americans also used shells strung
together as currency, called wampum.
