1. Adobe After Effects CC – Data-Driven Animation Assets
The assets included with this ZIP file show examples of compositions driven by JSON-formatted
data.
Open “Data-Driven Animation.aep” in the main folder. You will see several compositions:
• 1 other_soda_pop_map
• 2a Weather: Change Source Instructions
• 2b Weather Current Conditions
• 3 Weather Temperature Outlook
• 4 median home prices - C4D
• 4a median home prices - classic 3D
There is also a Data-Driven Animation Examples 2_1 folder, which contains the Weather.json data
file link that you can change to update the weather charts.
These sample files are provided by Adobe “as is” without warranty of any kind.

1) Other Soda Pop Map Composition
This composition is built from a static JSON data file that shows a map of the United States and the
percentage of the population that refers to fizzy beverages as either “soda,” “pop”, or “Coke” (i.e.,
“other”).
You can open the source data file (other_soda_pop.json in Data-Driven Animation Examples 2_1 /
(Footage) / JSON examples) in a text editor to see the fairly human-readable input data that drives
this composition.
Select Layer 1 (Expression Controls) in the composition and then choose Window > Effect
Controls: Expression Controls to view the Effect Controls panel for that layer.
For example:
1. Adjust the State ID slider, or enter a value between 1–50, to see how the expression
computes and updates the percentage lines for each state. Entering 0 displays the result for
the entire United States.
2. Use color pickers to change the colors of the incoming “soda,” “pop,” or “other” data.

2) Weather Compositions
Weather Current Conditions and Weather Temperature Outlook are two compositions built from
the same JSON data file for three cities. Play the compositions to see the animated weather
graphics.
You can open the weather data files for New York, Shanghai, and Los Angeles (in Data-Driven
Animation Examples 2_1 / (Footage) / JSON examples) in a text editor to see the fairly human-
readable input data that drives these compositions.
To change the city’s weather, right-click Weather.json in the Project panel, choose Replace
Footage > File, and then select a different weather JSON file. See the composition update.

3) Median Home Prices Compositions
These compositions are built from a JSON data file that shows median home prices in the
(contiguous) United States from 1996–2016. Play the composition to see 3D animation graphics
changing over time for each state. Note that the prices dip slightly in 2006–2010 (the “housing
crash”). One comp uses the C4D renderer for the 3D effects; the other uses the Classic 3D
renderer.
Select Layer 1 (Expression Controls) in either composition and then choose Window > Effect
Controls: Expression Controls to view the Effect Controls panel for that layer.
For example:
1. Use color pickers to change the colors of the Hot and Cold home prices, as well as the side
color.
2. Change the extrusion depth to be more or less subtle.
