receive a noble peace reward. He got
this for his work to stop racism. He will
always be remembered for his wish to
bring round equality.

5. BACKGROUND OF MARTIN LUTHER KING JR
• Martin Jr. attended Booker T Washington High School.
• In 1944, at age 15, King entered Morehouse College in Atlanta.
• He was minister and activist.
• He studies at Boston University.
• He became a pastor at the age of twenty-five and received his doctorate in theology in 1955.
• King visited India to learn about Mahatma Gandhi, the person who influenced him not to use violence in his struggle.
• On December 1st 1955 Rosa Parks was arrested and Martin met with other activists to plan a citywide protest that would become know as the Montgomery bus
boycott.
• Martin was arrested.
• In January 1957 Martin and roughly 60 other ministers and activists founded the Southern Christian Leadership Conference for the SCLC.
• Martin as president the SCLC help conduct nonviolent protests and demonstrations across the south to promote civil rights reforms
• The organization was registering African- Americans to vote.
• In 1963 Martin led a coalition of several civil rights groups and a non- violent campaign aimed at Birmingham Alabama.
• Martin wrote his now- famous letter from a Birmingham jail.
• In 1963 Martin was one of the driving forces behind the March for Jobs and Freedom.
• Martin was later named Time Magazine’s Man the year this further cemented his status as the nation’s foremost social change leader.
• In 1964 at 35 years old Martin become the youngest person ever to win the Nobel Peace Prize.
• In March of 1965 Martin led a march from Selma to the Capitol building in Montgomery Alabama.
• In 1967 Martin Luther King, Jr., speaks out against the Vietnam war.
• On April 4th 1968 Martin was shot while standing on the balcony outside of his hotel room at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis Tennessee.
• In 1983 President Ronald Reagan signed a bill creating a federal holiday honoring Martin.

People who fought for an idea and who were able to leave their lives for it are worthy of my admiration.

Non- Violence Resistance if you use love and peaceful methods to change unfair things in society is much better than war.
Solve conflicts peacefully, without ever hitting or hurting someone. When you feel angry or upset, express your feelings in
words and talk about what you need to make things better.
When someone treats you poorly, try to treat them well in return. Use your energy to love yourself and help others.
