Race And Its Impact On Society
Race, a term people choose to blandly deny but affect our everyday lives. Whether or not we choose to be consciously aware of it or not, race has an
astronomical effect on our society. A persons' race affects what school that they attend, their form of employment and ultimately how they are perceived.
Race is defined as "groupings of people believed to share common descent, based on perceived innate physical similarities". Smith Lecture notes.
Essentially, one can categorize or identify the race of an individual based on physical characteristics such as eye shape, nose, hair color, hair texture,
and body structure. The idea of race has not existed through out human time, it was a term that was recently established by white suppress as a
means to justify the enslavement of African people. The term is still being used today as a means to continue to suppress the blacks and to make
whites seem superior to black individuals. The purpose of race was to explain why some people could be denied the natural rights that was promised
to them; liberty. Race is a social construct, this means that the concept of "race" results from from a process of signification whereby only certain
physical characteristics are attributed with meaning and are then used to organize populations into groups which are then defined as 'races '. Through
social practice a persons' perception of an individual based on specific physical attributes are used to group people that share these physical properties

Reflective Essay On Race And Ethnicity
Talk about race and ethnicity, sometimes get hard to keep it in the gray area. My story started with my first time working in USA. When I started that
job search in the agencies, I found that mixture of race and ethnicity of people from different countries. Wanting to share with them during work
without malice any framework my way of being: the power of labels in race and ethnicity. When you don't know diverse cultures, it is difficult when
another arrives without resentment. When you send us to work through the agency, try to establish a friendship with the co–workers with whom you
would spend all day. Understand that being in a country other than yours. While we worked during that day I felt some displeasure on the part of
one of the coworkers; because I showed a desire to learn and do my best work, so they can send me to a job. Well. At the end of the day, the
supervisor talked to me more and the group's directions were given through me as the one who interacted more with him and paid more attention to the
details.
The supervisor sent us to cover and move some things from the house where we were. After finishing moving them, we began to work with the water
accident inside the house, everything that was wet directly to the dump. The walls, the wooden beginning, were dismantled little by little and for the
dump. The problem started with the African–American, who was working very fast and who paid us by the hour; but the supervisor divided us into
two groups of 2 people.

Essay On Race And Sociology
The History of Sociology and Race
Race is the division between different ethnicities or people with different backgrounds that live in one society. So why is race important? Well, people
have the feeling of categorizing, making people feel uncomfortable towards other races, which can lead to discrimination. The way sociologist uses the
concept of race and ethnicity, is by connecting the idea of majority and minority groups with social structures of inequality, stratification and power.
Race refers to physical differences that cultures and groups consider socially significant. While sociology is the study of social life and social change,
how social causes and consequences of human behavior affect society. Sociologists spend time investigating the structure of different groups,
organizations and societies, on how people within these contexts interact. Race has adopted to the idea of white's social change in power during the
Great Depression Era. To begin in which there has been a great impact on the field of Sociology, is the Great Depression in 1930. This had a dramatic

What Is Race: My Reflection Essay
I took the time today to read the article titled "What is Race" by Victor M. Fernandez, RN, BSN and found myself agreeably intrigued and in
admiration of his thoughts regarding race. Victor touched on an extremely insightful and significant topic; one that most people have sturdy opinions
about. Race – what is it? What does this mean to you? What does it mean to our upcoming careers in the nursing field? I trust that how we characterize
and assess our awareness of race is due exclusively to how we were raised. I do not mean merely what we were taught from our family or culture
about race, but to a certain extent how we have lived it, and how it has lived around us. "Race is a modern idea. Ancient societies, like the Greeks, did
not divide...show more content...
Does everyone feel this way about different races? No, I don't think that they do. There is still a tendency to judge and stereotype based on racial
profiling; not everyone was raised the same way that I was. Does this mean that I believe racism in present society is still largely a concern? This is a
challenging question to answer because so many variables can play into this. You see racism everyday when a person of Middle Eastern ethnicity
boards an airplane, or you happen to end up in a cab with an Iranian driver. However, I do not exclusively believe that this means racism is a serious
problem. It is human nature to fear the unknown and for a lot of people this fear inadvertently creates racial prejudice.
Could it be that racial profiling – stereotyping – has worsened in present day? Again, this is a terribly difficult question to answer due to the vast
amounts of variables that can play into it. "In 19th century, the concept of nationalism was often used to justify the domination of one race over
another within a specific nation, in the last decades of the 20th century; the legal system as well as the official ideology emphasized racial equality.
Racial prejudice remains a continuing problem throughout the world. However, there are fewer race–based conflicts in the 21st century than in the
past" (Ethnicity vs. Race). I believe that people, nowadays, are more

Essay On Race In Society
Race plays several roles in society. It can be a controversial topic, a scapegoat to issues, a topic to critically study, or a source to reference in different
areas of research. Whatever role it takes shows how it is inherently part of our communities. With these ideas in mind, race matters today because it
affects a variety of elements in society, such as education, politics, and health care. By assessing how it affects these specific aspects, one can note that
it creates many contemporary issues in the United States. However, it is possible to overcome these problems if society decides to gear towards a post
racial future of this country. Educational systems in the United States are heavily influenced by racial requirements. One of the many requirements that
holds a strong impact in these systems is implementing affirmative action in these communities. Affirmative action is a product of "the 1960's Civil
Rights Movement, intended to provide equal opportunities for members of minority groups and women in education" (NCSL). In other words,...show

With all of these problems raised by the concept of race, society will eventually overcome them and escape from any forms of racial preference,
discrimination, and prejudice. This is the ideology behind a post racial future. However, it is difficult to attain in that it tries to eradicate any form of
racial thoughts, which in fact, race is socially constructed (Kim 1063). A post racial future would require the deconstruction of such a concept from
society and leads individuals to turn to other forms in order to distinguish each other, whether it be by religion or gender. While it would seem nice
that individuals are not stereotyped in an offensive manner due to their race in a post racial future, it is up to society to see whether there are benefits

Race And Culture Essay
The difference between race and culture is ambiguous, as they overlap but can not be equated to each other. Race is inflexible because it is derived
from evident ties to a location, only changing between generations. Culture, however, is fluid and changes within generations. What is commonplace
between the two is how race affects culture through developments specific to a region. However, as argued in "'Blaxicans' and Other Reinvented
Americans" by Richard Rodriguez their uncommon ground is far greater than what they share. Multiple aspects other than race affect culture even more
so than race does, such as individuality, area of occupation rather than the area of origin, and other cultures. For this, culture has multiple definitions

Therefore, opposition to change in America can come in the form of those that would rather view people as one category or another rather than a mix.
Due to this opposition, Rodriguez has written "Blaxicans" for citizens of the U.S. , usually in the older generations, who are anti–assimilation.
Anti–assimilation meaning they would rather keep races and cultures separate than allow them to merge. However, as he puts it, "I am not in favor
of assimilation" (Rodriguez 91). His ken on the overall situation of culture in America is prepared and processed. This means he clearly sees the
effects of an already diverse country. There is no doubt in Rodriguez's mind that assimilation will occur and is occurring now. What he is trying to
disprove is the false bubble anti–assimilation citizens have created for themselves. They may be able to keep themselves apart, but they do not have
the power to keep cultures separate in the future. This is because cultures are easier to join and better represent a person. Therefore, assimilation equals
the rise in cultural labels because merging peoples together will in turn allow for the creation of new classifications that describe the person rather than
their race.To further prove that culture is more widespread, Rodriguez pulls from personal and outside stories that showcase the changing

Understanding Race Essay
Throughout this week's discussion, the topic of race was thoroughly reviewed. Even though race was a large part of the discussion, the topics of
history and biology both came up in the reading and on "Understanding Race", which is an interactive website. The topic of History was brought
up, as a way to explain how anthropological research has evolved. In the 19th century, anthropologists were known as "compilers", according to
Nanda and Warms. They would compile data that was already given to them, instead of collect their own data like they do today. Today,
anthropologists are known more as "fieldworkers", because they physically go out, and meet new cultures and races as a way to collect data. The
topic of Biology was also brought up when...show more content...
Biology anthropology, which is also known as physical anthropology, is meant to examine the process ofhuman evolution and human biosocial
variation. Once these topics are better understood, an anthropologist is able to help with issues such as, nutrition, health in societies, genetics within the
human population, and adaptations. Anthropology also crosses into the topic of history, because today's anthropologists are trying to disprove the
thought process of people. In the past, many strongly believed that people were set apart by the physical, such as their appearance or the way they
spoke. But today, anthropologists want individuals to better understand that race is not a reason to divide people like we use to in the past.
The topic of physical science also relates to the topic of race. Physical science studies the topic of the non–living. Non–living things, such as someone's
surrounds, like the home they live in, relate to their culture. Culture, which is a way of life for a group of people, relates to race. Race is a group of
people who are placed into a "category" as being similar to do physical and social traits. All different types of sciences are able to come together, as a
way to improve the

Social Construction Of Race Essay
Social Construction Of Race In society, race clearly affects one's life chances. These are the chances of getting opportunities and gaining experience
for progression. The social construction of race is based on privileges and availability of resources. Looking at society and the formation of race in a
historical context, whites have always held some sort of delusional belief of a "white–skin privilege." This advantage grants whites an advantage in
society whether one desires it or not. This notion is often commonly referred to as reality. In order for one to understand how racism has come to be
what we know it as today, we must first examine the Constitution of the United States. This document clearly states, "We the...show more content...
I believe that of the rights denied to many, the most significant were those that were denied to the slaves. Slaves were certainly people, although
their rights were not secured in the Constitution. Being that their right to vote was denied, they were forced to live in a society in which the
government officials did not represent their race. Hence, this produced a nation that was segregated into two very separate classes. Segregated from
one another on a social status level, the classes consisted of those who ran the country and those who worked to live in it. As you can see,
inequalities have plagued America for hundreds of years and continue to do so. I believe racism to be as apparent today if not more profound then in
the past. A large portion of society believes that no man is still to this day denied any unalienable rights. I do not believe this statement to be true. We
have adopted affirmative action programs and enforced strict equal opportunity employment laws to hinder discrimination. Although I believe it is still
a very prevalent issue in today's society. Despite laws, investigations and results show that twenty percent of African Americans interviewing for jobs
were turned down due to the color of their skin (Omi and Winant 67–68). Indeed racism may be very subtle in most cases; it is not a thing of the past
but rather a very serious problem in society that evolves

A superficial examination of Roget's Thesaurus of the English Language reveals the following facts; the word WHITENESS has 134 synonyms; 44 of
which are favorable and pleasing to contemplate, i.e. purity, cleanness, immaculateness, bright, shining, ivory, fair, blonde, stainless, clean, clear,

synonyms for WHITENESS appear to me have negative implications–and these only in the mildest sense: gloss over, whitewash, gray, wan, pale, ashen,

The word BLACKNESS has 120 synonyms, 60 of which are distinctly unfavorable, and none of them even mildly positive. Among the offending 60

Narrative Essay On Race
My family and friends know I don't spend much time on Facebook, but for better or worse I am going to break form and launch some thoughts into
the ether ... A few days ago, a friend posted a Young Turk's video commentary on the beating Thomas Jennings received from two Brooklyn police
officers. Someone responded to the post: "SMH." To which my friend replied: "Smh isn't even enough." I'm so out of touch I had to look up 'SMH'.
Once enlightened, I almost joined in with "It's time for all us 'average' folks to SOF: Shake our fists." But I held back. No; SOF isn't nearly enough,
either. Not just lately, and often, I wonder how an average person can push back against this ongoing tragedy. Folks a lot smarter, more determined and
more selfless than me have tried but our country continues to wrestle w/ its great nagging birthmark: Race. What realistic chance does one privileged,
congenitally average middle–class white male* have against the bias–based inequities he has witnessed, and, yes – occasionally taken advantage of –
throughout his life? Still, there has to be something more than bouts of outrage that dissipate into the spiritual laziness of "Yeah, but what can I do?" I

Research Paper On Race And Ethnicity
Race and ethnicity
Race and ethnicity are the occasionally have been used interchangeably. Race is described as a person's physical appearance such as skin color, eye
color, hair and many other biological traits and characteristics. Race mainly refers to the differences in skin color in the contemporary world. When
we say that person is fair skinned or is black we are referring to the race of that person. Ethnicity is the cultural aspect of a an individual or a group
such as the nationality of the person, the language they use to communicate, their descendants , the particular region they inhabit for example
American, African, African Americans, etc. In a nutshellrace is an overview of how you look and ethnicity is the social and cultural aspect of grouping

This is of opinion that the differences and issues of race and ethnicity at some point have served the society. The big question here is howracism and
discrimination positively accord to society. That is because it is beneficial only to those belonging to dominant race and ethnicity not to the society or
community as a whole. It has helped the dominant reap advantage from the subordinates. The best example could be the slavery. Slaveholders were
benefitted considerably especially when industrialization first came into practice.
Despite the increase in the poverty, crime and discrimination against the inferior ones and the discrepancies in the education and occupation it has
some advantage to the society because members of the impoverish have a sense of oneness and promote the group solidity. They can act and form mass
mobilization for their rightful place, position and recognition.

Reflection On Race And Ethnicity
To reflect on race and ethnicity, you must know what does it mean. What is Race? What is Ethnicity? According to Parillo, Race is a categorization
in which people sharing visible biological characteristics regard themselves or are regarded by others as a single group on that basis. Ethnicity is
shared cultural traits and/or national origin (2016). I believe their still some confusing between the two terms. Most people I asked about race and
ethnicity, they thought they were the same thing. However, I thought so too until I started this class. Race still a complicated category due to the
visible biological characteristics. With the wide ranges of physical appearances, it makes it difficult to determine what category each person should be
in. I believe this brings about racism. According to Parillo, racism slowly evolved out of sorting humans into categories based physical appearances
(2016). However, ethnicity caused racism within the races due to the different languages and cultural traits. A good example is Rwanda genocide in
1994. This was mass slaughtered trying to wipe out the entire Tutsi ethnic group which killing over 800,000 people. In America, I wonder if the same
thing is happening among African Americans. They are being sent to the prison systems due to the systematic racism They are getting longer prison
sentences or getting murdered by police officers due to systematic racism.
Growing up, I learned the following things about race and ethnicity
I was born in upstate New York. When I was about 4 years old, my family decided to move to eastern North Carolina. My parents were originally
from North Carolina and, so they decide to move back home to their hometown. They thought moving to the South was better to raise a family. I
have seen my father's talk about racism in the South and compare to the living in the North. My father has told me that he worked around every
race and ethnic groups. When we move to the South, I saw the frustration that my father face as an African American male. The racism for against
my dad was depraved that we were going to move back to New York after only being in North Carolina for only three years. As I look back, I wish we
did return to New York. My mother was

sports. Michael Jordan, OJ Simpson, Mohamed Ali, Bo Jackson, just to name a few. When players like these come along that are black and sort of

each season every player is required to attend diversity classes, and if a player chooses to talk trash during a game and use racial comments, it will

Diversity, Culture, Gender, And Race Essay
What does diversity, culture, gender, and race all have in common with one another? These are all names of labels. In the TED podcast, "Beyond
Tolerance" Arthur Brooks, Verna Myers, and Aziz Abu Sarah introduce the main problem between all of these labels. The common problem between
these labels is diversity. Society has this mindset of what everyone should be like and if stepped out of that perspective, that person will be looked
down upon. This in turn creates diversity. In The Gender Knot, Allan Johnson introduces the fact " As men go about their everyday lives, they don't
have to bother to think about how sexism affects women, just as whites don't have to concern themselves with the consequences of racism and the
upper class lives largely oblivious to poverty and middle–class anxiety." Johnson is applying almost all problems between society and diversity. On this
diversity expedition these common labels will be picked deeply apart one by one through the eyes of a uncommon feminist man.
Diversity creates this ideal that everyone has a default set of characteristics that they have depending on what race, gender, or culture they come from.
This creates a bias that people automatically think of when they see that type of person. In "Beyond Tolerance" Verna Myers states " How are we
going to know who people [truly] are when we were told to avoid and be afraid of them." Myers has a good point. She is stating that basically as kids
we are told not to talk to strangers and grow

Culture and Race Anthropologists have always had their discrepancies with the word culture and its background significance. There have been
numerous definitions that have filtered through the field, yet not one that everyone can accept or agree with. Franz Boas, an anthropologist in the early

behaviour. Although Boas and his students had a slightly different idea in mind. They ultimately reached a conclusion, a definition of culture in their

culture and race as opposites. "Culture is learned and can change," (Abu–Lughod, p. 144), and race is something inborn. Although she can only depict
and explain the concept of culture, and how it has become necessary and not the reasons behind it. Lila Abu–Lughod also writes about feminism in
regard to culture. " It has been important for most feminists to locate sex differences in culture, not biology or nature," (Abu–Lughod, p. 144). There
have been many cultural differences between women and men, " a different voice" perhaps from Anglo–American feminist Gilligan and her followers,
(Abu–Lughod, p. 145), as well as an explanation of the differences, " whether through a socially informed psychoanalytic theory, a Marxist–derived
theory of the effects of the division of labour and women's role in social reproduction, an analysis of maternal practice or even a theory of sexual
exploitation," (Abu–Lughod, p. 145). With that there has been an increasingly large demand for more women oriented culture, a place where they can
express themselves and learn about their gender culture, and not that of men. "That is to say, if women share something in common, it is not the result

Reflection On Race And Race
Sex and gender and Race and ethnicity were two topics that really stood out to me during the course of this class. The reason those topics caught my
attention was because I didn't realize how unaware I was of all of the social problems surrounding those topics still going on today. I assumed we had
already conquered racism and sexism in the 21st century with the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King jr., the 19th amendment granting
women the right to vote, and women's rights movements in the 1960s. But I was clearly blind to the amount of institutional sexism and racism that
still take place in education systems, athletics, the workplace, media, health care systems etc. Such as girls receiving less teacher attention and less
useful feedback than boys, girls not being seen as strong enough for certain sports, workers of color being concentrated in lower–paying jobs, members
of ethnoracial minorities are less likely to have access to health insurance etc. I was fascinated with looking at the most common environments
with a fresh pair of eyes and a different outlook on everyday life. Seeing how different the world I conjured up in my head is from reality was a wake

why.

Race And Its Impact On Society

  • 1. Race And Its Impact On Society Race, a term people choose to blandly deny but affect our everyday lives. Whether or not we choose to be consciously aware of it or not, race has an astronomical effect on our society. A persons' race affects what school that they attend, their form of employment and ultimately how they are perceived. Race is defined as "groupings of people believed to share common descent, based on perceived innate physical similarities". Smith Lecture notes. Essentially, one can categorize or identify the race of an individual based on physical characteristics such as eye shape, nose, hair color, hair texture, and body structure. The idea of race has not existed through out human time, it was a term that was recently established by white suppress as a means to justify the enslavement of African people. The term is still being used today as a means to continue to suppress the blacks and to make whites seem superior to black individuals. The purpose of race was to explain why some people could be denied the natural rights that was promised to them; liberty. Race is a social construct, this means that the concept of "race" results from from a process of signification whereby only certain physical characteristics are attributed with meaning and are then used to organize populations into groups which are then defined as 'races '. Through social practice a persons' perception of an individual based on specific physical attributes are used to group people that share these physical properties Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Reflective Essay On Race And Ethnicity Talk about race and ethnicity, sometimes get hard to keep it in the gray area. My story started with my first time working in USA. When I started that job search in the agencies, I found that mixture of race and ethnicity of people from different countries. Wanting to share with them during work without malice any framework my way of being: the power of labels in race and ethnicity. When you don't know diverse cultures, it is difficult when another arrives without resentment. When you send us to work through the agency, try to establish a friendship with the co–workers with whom you would spend all day. Understand that being in a country other than yours. While we worked during that day I felt some displeasure on the part of one of the coworkers; because I showed a desire to learn and do my best work, so they can send me to a job. Well. At the end of the day, the supervisor talked to me more and the group's directions were given through me as the one who interacted more with him and paid more attention to the details. The supervisor sent us to cover and move some things from the house where we were. After finishing moving them, we began to work with the water accident inside the house, everything that was wet directly to the dump. The walls, the wooden beginning, were dismantled little by little and for the dump. The problem started with the African–American, who was working very fast and who paid us by the hour; but the supervisor divided us into two groups of 2 people. Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Essay On Race And Sociology The History of Sociology and Race Race is the division between different ethnicities or people with different backgrounds that live in one society. So why is race important? Well, people have the feeling of categorizing, making people feel uncomfortable towards other races, which can lead to discrimination. The way sociologist uses the concept of race and ethnicity, is by connecting the idea of majority and minority groups with social structures of inequality, stratification and power. Race refers to physical differences that cultures and groups consider socially significant. While sociology is the study of social life and social change, how social causes and consequences of human behavior affect society. Sociologists spend time investigating the structure of different groups, organizations and societies, on how people within these contexts interact. Race has adopted to the idea of white's social change in power during the Great Depression Era. To begin in which there has been a great impact on the field of Sociology, is the Great Depression in 1930. This had a dramatic effect in the world, as on the rest of...show more content... The cause of this make President Roosevelt not favored the legislation of the (NAACP) more known as the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. "The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) was the dominant black protest organization that preceded the modern Civil Rights Movement. Founded in 1909 by black and white intellectuals , the NAACP did battle with racial domination primarily in the courts. Soon after its founding, the NAACP won several Supreme Court's cases the dismantle legal barriers preventing blacks from voting." ( Desmond & Emirbayer Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. What Is Race: My Reflection Essay I took the time today to read the article titled "What is Race" by Victor M. Fernandez, RN, BSN and found myself agreeably intrigued and in admiration of his thoughts regarding race. Victor touched on an extremely insightful and significant topic; one that most people have sturdy opinions about. Race – what is it? What does this mean to you? What does it mean to our upcoming careers in the nursing field? I trust that how we characterize and assess our awareness of race is due exclusively to how we were raised. I do not mean merely what we were taught from our family or culture about race, but to a certain extent how we have lived it, and how it has lived around us. "Race is a modern idea. Ancient societies, like the Greeks, did not divide...show more content... Does everyone feel this way about different races? No, I don't think that they do. There is still a tendency to judge and stereotype based on racial profiling; not everyone was raised the same way that I was. Does this mean that I believe racism in present society is still largely a concern? This is a challenging question to answer because so many variables can play into this. You see racism everyday when a person of Middle Eastern ethnicity boards an airplane, or you happen to end up in a cab with an Iranian driver. However, I do not exclusively believe that this means racism is a serious problem. It is human nature to fear the unknown and for a lot of people this fear inadvertently creates racial prejudice. Could it be that racial profiling – stereotyping – has worsened in present day? Again, this is a terribly difficult question to answer due to the vast amounts of variables that can play into it. "In 19th century, the concept of nationalism was often used to justify the domination of one race over another within a specific nation, in the last decades of the 20th century; the legal system as well as the official ideology emphasized racial equality. Racial prejudice remains a continuing problem throughout the world. However, there are fewer race–based conflicts in the 21st century than in the past" (Ethnicity vs. Race). I believe that people, nowadays, are more Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Essay On Race In Society Race plays several roles in society. It can be a controversial topic, a scapegoat to issues, a topic to critically study, or a source to reference in different areas of research. Whatever role it takes shows how it is inherently part of our communities. With these ideas in mind, race matters today because it affects a variety of elements in society, such as education, politics, and health care. By assessing how it affects these specific aspects, one can note that it creates many contemporary issues in the United States. However, it is possible to overcome these problems if society decides to gear towards a post racial future of this country. Educational systems in the United States are heavily influenced by racial requirements. One of the many requirements that holds a strong impact in these systems is implementing affirmative action in these communities. Affirmative action is a product of "the 1960's Civil Rights Movement, intended to provide equal opportunities for members of minority groups and women in education" (NCSL). In other words,...show more content... With all of these problems raised by the concept of race, society will eventually overcome them and escape from any forms of racial preference, discrimination, and prejudice. This is the ideology behind a post racial future. However, it is difficult to attain in that it tries to eradicate any form of racial thoughts, which in fact, race is socially constructed (Kim 1063). A post racial future would require the deconstruction of such a concept from society and leads individuals to turn to other forms in order to distinguish each other, whether it be by religion or gender. While it would seem nice that individuals are not stereotyped in an offensive manner due to their race in a post racial future, it is up to society to see whether there are benefits in living in this Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Race And Culture Essay The difference between race and culture is ambiguous, as they overlap but can not be equated to each other. Race is inflexible because it is derived from evident ties to a location, only changing between generations. Culture, however, is fluid and changes within generations. What is commonplace between the two is how race affects culture through developments specific to a region. However, as argued in "'Blaxicans' and Other Reinvented Americans" by Richard Rodriguez their uncommon ground is far greater than what they share. Multiple aspects other than race affect culture even more so than race does, such as individuality, area of occupation rather than the area of origin, and other cultures. For this, culture has multiple definitions and opportunities...show more content... However, as he puts it, "I am not in favor of assimilation" (Rodriguez 91). His ken on the overall situation of culture in America is prepared and processed. This means he clearly sees the effects of an already diverse country. There is no doubt in Rodriguez's mind that assimilation will occur and is occurring now. What he is trying to disprove is the false bubble anti–assimilation citizens have created for themselves. They may be able to keep themselves apart, but they do not have the power to keep cultures separate in the future. This is because cultures are easier to join and better represent a person. Therefore, assimilation equals the rise in cultural labels because merging peoples together will in turn allow for the creation of new classifications that describe the person rather than their race.To further prove that culture is more widespread, Rodriguez pulls from personal and outside stories that showcase the changing Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Understanding Race Essay Throughout this week's discussion, the topic of race was thoroughly reviewed. Even though race was a large part of the discussion, the topics of history and biology both came up in the reading and on "Understanding Race", which is an interactive website. The topic of History was brought up, as a way to explain how anthropological research has evolved. In the 19th century, anthropologists were known as "compilers", according to Nanda and Warms. They would compile data that was already given to them, instead of collect their own data like they do today. Today, anthropologists are known more as "fieldworkers", because they physically go out, and meet new cultures and races as a way to collect data. The topic of Biology was also brought up when...show more content... Biology anthropology, which is also known as physical anthropology, is meant to examine the process ofhuman evolution and human biosocial variation. Once these topics are better understood, an anthropologist is able to help with issues such as, nutrition, health in societies, genetics within the human population, and adaptations. Anthropology also crosses into the topic of history, because today's anthropologists are trying to disprove the thought process of people. In the past, many strongly believed that people were set apart by the physical, such as their appearance or the way they spoke. But today, anthropologists want individuals to better understand that race is not a reason to divide people like we use to in the past. The topic of physical science also relates to the topic of race. Physical science studies the topic of the non–living. Non–living things, such as someone's surrounds, like the home they live in, relate to their culture. Culture, which is a way of life for a group of people, relates to race. Race is a group of people who are placed into a "category" as being similar to do physical and social traits. All different types of sciences are able to come together, as a way to improve the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Social Construction Of Race Essay Social Construction Of Race In society, race clearly affects one's life chances. These are the chances of getting opportunities and gaining experience for progression. The social construction of race is based on privileges and availability of resources. Looking at society and the formation of race in a historical context, whites have always held some sort of delusional belief of a "white–skin privilege." This advantage grants whites an advantage in society whether one desires it or not. This notion is often commonly referred to as reality. In order for one to understand how racism has come to be what we know it as today, we must first examine the Constitution of the United States. This document clearly states, "We the...show more content... I believe that of the rights denied to many, the most significant were those that were denied to the slaves. Slaves were certainly people, although their rights were not secured in the Constitution. Being that their right to vote was denied, they were forced to live in a society in which the government officials did not represent their race. Hence, this produced a nation that was segregated into two very separate classes. Segregated from one another on a social status level, the classes consisted of those who ran the country and those who worked to live in it. As you can see, inequalities have plagued America for hundreds of years and continue to do so. I believe racism to be as apparent today if not more profound then in the past. A large portion of society believes that no man is still to this day denied any unalienable rights. I do not believe this statement to be true. We have adopted affirmative action programs and enforced strict equal opportunity employment laws to hinder discrimination. Although I believe it is still a very prevalent issue in today's society. Despite laws, investigations and results show that twenty percent of African Americans interviewing for jobs were turned down due to the color of their skin (Omi and Winant 67–68). Indeed racism may be very subtle in most cases; it is not a thing of the past but rather a very serious problem in society that evolves Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 9. Language And Race Essay Language and Race/Ethnicity A superficial examination of Roget's Thesaurus of the English Language reveals the following facts; the word WHITENESS has 134 synonyms; 44 of which are favorable and pleasing to contemplate, i.e. purity, cleanness, immaculateness, bright, shining, ivory, fair, blonde, stainless, clean, clear, chaste, unblemished, unsullied, innocent, honorable, upright, just, straight–forward, fair, genuine, trustworthy, (a white man–colloquialism). Only ten synonyms for WHITENESS appear to me have negative implications–and these only in the mildest sense: gloss over, whitewash, gray, wan, pale, ashen, etc. The word BLACKNESS has 120 synonyms, 60 of which are distinctly unfavorable, and none of them even mildly positive. Among the offending 60 were such words as: blot, blotch, smut, smudge, sully, begrime, soot, becloud, obscure, dingy, murky, low –toned, threatening, frowning, foreboding, forbidden, sinister, baneful, dismal, thundery, evil, wicked, malignant, deadly, unclean, dirty, unwashed, foul, etc.....not to mention 20 synonyms directly related to race, such as: Negro, Negress, nigger, darky, blackamoor, etc....show more content... A few days ago, a friend posted a Young Turk's video commentary on the beating Thomas Jennings received from two Brooklyn police officers. Someone responded to the post: "SMH." To which my friend replied: "Smh isn't even enough." I'm so out of touch I had to look up 'SMH'. Once enlightened, I almost joined in with "It's time for all us 'average' folks to SOF: Shake our fists." But I held back. No; SOF isn't nearly enough, either. Not just lately, and often, I wonder how an average person can push back against this ongoing tragedy. Folks a lot smarter, more determined and more selfless than me have tried but our country continues to wrestle w/ its great nagging birthmark: Race. What realistic chance does one privileged, congenitally average middle–class white male* have against the bias–based inequities he has witnessed, and, yes – occasionally taken advantage of – throughout his life? Still, there has to be something more than bouts of outrage that dissipate into the spiritual laziness of "Yeah, but what can I do?" I am part of the majority who enjoy the luxury grieving from a safe distance. And history teaches that things don't improve unless enough of us 'average' folks cross...show more content... Call it the 'Passive Ploy'. Would it change anything? Create unintended consequences? Really annoy your average cop who is simply trying to do his or her job? • 11. Research Paper On Race And Ethnicity Race and ethnicity Race and ethnicity are the occasionally have been used interchangeably. Race is described as a person's physical appearance such as skin color, eye color, hair and many other biological traits and characteristics. Race mainly refers to the differences in skin color in the contemporary world. When we say that person is fair skinned or is black we are referring to the race of that person. Ethnicity is the cultural aspect of a an individual or a group such as the nationality of the person, the language they use to communicate, their descendants , the particular region they inhabit for example American, African, African Americans, etc. In a nutshellrace is an overview of how you look and ethnicity is the social and cultural aspect of grouping you are born into. Physical and biological anthropologists have proven the existence of human race. But the word 'race...show more content... Functionalism This is of opinion that the differences and issues of race and ethnicity at some point have served the society. The big question here is howracism and discrimination positively accord to society. That is because it is beneficial only to those belonging to dominant race and ethnicity not to the society or community as a whole. It has helped the dominant reap advantage from the subordinates. The best example could be the slavery. Slaveholders were benefitted considerably especially when industrialization first came into practice. Despite the increase in the poverty, crime and discrimination against the inferior ones and the discrepancies in the education and occupation it has some advantage to the society because members of the impoverish have a sense of oneness and promote the group solidity. They can act and form mass mobilization for their rightful place, position and recognition. Conflict theory / critical Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Reflection On Race And Ethnicity To reflect on race and ethnicity, you must know what does it mean. What is Race? What is Ethnicity? According to Parillo, Race is a categorization in which people sharing visible biological characteristics regard themselves or are regarded by others as a single group on that basis. Ethnicity is shared cultural traits and/or national origin (2016). I believe their still some confusing between the two terms. Most people I asked about race and ethnicity, they thought they were the same thing. However, I thought so too until I started this class. Race still a complicated category due to the visible biological characteristics. With the wide ranges of physical appearances, it makes it difficult to determine what category each person should be in. I believe this brings about racism. According to Parillo, racism slowly evolved out of sorting humans into categories based physical appearances (2016). However, ethnicity caused racism within the races due to the different languages and cultural traits. A good example is Rwanda genocide in 1994. This was mass slaughtered trying to wipe out the entire Tutsi ethnic group which killing over 800,000 people. In America, I wonder if the same thing is happening among African Americans. They are being sent to the prison systems due to the systematic racism They are getting longer prison sentences or getting murdered by police officers due to systematic racism. Growing up, I learned the following things about race and ethnicity I was born in upstate New York. When I was about 4 years old, my family decided to move to eastern North Carolina. My parents were originally from North Carolina and, so they decide to move back home to their hometown. They thought moving to the South was better to raise a family. I have seen my father's talk about racism in the South and compare to the living in the North. My father has told me that he worked around every race and ethnic groups. When we move to the South, I saw the frustration that my father face as an African American male. The racism for against my dad was depraved that we were going to move back to New York after only being in North Carolina for only three years. As I look back, I wish we did return to New York. • 13. Race in Sports Essay There are many reasons why the number of minorities that participate is sports vary from sport to sport. Race plays a big part in sports as well as in our society. Why is it that a group of people can harass and abuse a young black male for raping a white female, but on the next Saturday at the big football game cheer him on and hope that he has a great game. Over the years there have been some great black sports players, in almost all sports. Michael Jordan, OJ Simpson, Mohamed Ali, Bo Jackson, just to name a few. When players like these come along that are black and sort of take over a sport, many white male sports fans say stuff like, "He's black, he's faster than the white players." (NHL championship) Today the NHL is trying hard to promote diversity in their league. Before each season every player is required to attend diversity classes, and if a player chooses to talk trash during a game and use racial comments, it will cost them big time, with fines and suspensions. There are forty–five drivers on the NASCAR Nextel Cup; every single one of them is white. There has never been a person of color to drive a racecar in the Winston Cup or the Nextel Cup. That's about to change, or some hope it does. NASCAR'S chief operating official George Pyne has teamed up with Magic Johnson and started a program to help encourage minorities to try to race. There is one black driver on the NASCAR truck series and a couple in smaller race series down south, but to this day none are on the Nextel Cup series. On the PGA tour, it doesn't matter how fast you are, how much you can bench press, or how high you can jump, so why is it that the tour is dominated by white golfers. Moreover, many people argue that race relations are improving, whereas critics claim that they will never change for the better. Various studies show thatrace can be recognized by many individuals as early as six months old. This could be a great source to use for my research paper as it includes the statistics behind the increasing number of male Black Africans, proving race relations are steadily improving to an extent. Djamba and Kimuna's source relates to all other sources I present by triggering a certain factor upon the term race; African male immigrant's position in the employment industry. • 15. Diversity, Culture, Gender, And Race Essay What does diversity, culture, gender, and race all have in common with one another? These are all names of labels. In the TED podcast, "Beyond Tolerance" Arthur Brooks, Verna Myers, and Aziz Abu Sarah introduce the main problem between all of these labels. The common problem between these labels is diversity. Society has this mindset of what everyone should be like and if stepped out of that perspective, that person will be looked down upon. This in turn creates diversity. In The Gender Knot, Allan Johnson introduces the fact " As men go about their everyday lives, they don't have to bother to think about how sexism affects women, just as whites don't have to concern themselves with the consequences of racism and the upper class lives largely oblivious to poverty and middle–class anxiety." Johnson is applying almost all problems between society and diversity. On this diversity expedition these common labels will be picked deeply apart one by one through the eyes of a uncommon feminist man. Diversity creates this ideal that everyone has a default set of characteristics that they have depending on what race, gender, or culture they come from. This creates a bias that people automatically think of when they see that type of person. In "Beyond Tolerance" Verna Myers states " How are we going to know who people [truly] are when we were told to avoid and be afraid of them." Myers has a good point. She is stating that basically as kids we are told not to talk to strangers and grow Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. Culture and Race Essay Culture and Race Anthropologists have always had their discrepancies with the word culture and its background significance. There have been numerous definitions that have filtered through the field, yet not one that everyone can accept or agree with. Franz Boas, an anthropologist in the early 20th Century, and his students, had a difficult time figuring out the objective of what culture is. Culture is about learning and shared ideas about behaviour. Although Boas and his students had a slightly different idea in mind. They ultimately reached a conclusion, a definition of culture in their view that is a contradiction in terms. Boas sates that, " culture was expressed through the medium of language but was not reducible to it;...show more content... 143). She illustrates how essential culture is to anthropology and how anthropology helps to balance culture, as well as its ties with race. She considers culture and race as opposites. "Culture is learned and can change," (Abu–Lughod, p. 144), and race is something inborn. Although she can only depict and explain the concept of culture, and how it has become necessary and not the reasons behind it. Lila Abu–Lughod also writes about feminism in regard to culture. " It has been important for most feminists to locate sex differences in culture, not biology or nature," (Abu–Lughod, p. 144). There have been many cultural differences between women and men, " a different voice" perhaps from Anglo–American feminist Gilligan and her followers, (Abu–Lughod, p. 145), as well as an explanation of the differences, " whether through a socially informed psychoanalytic theory, a Marxist–derived theory of the effects of the division of labour and women's role in social reproduction, an analysis of maternal practice or even a theory of sexual exploitation," (Abu–Lughod, p. 145). With that there has been an increasingly large demand for more women oriented culture, a place where they can express themselves and learn about their gender culture, and not that of men. "That is to say, if women share something in common, it is not the result of a universal bodily maturational process but of mutually experienced interpolations of race, class, and sexual Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Reflection On Race And Race Sex and gender and Race and ethnicity were two topics that really stood out to me during the course of this class. The reason those topics caught my attention was because I didn't realize how unaware I was of all of the social problems surrounding those topics still going on today. I assumed we had already conquered racism and sexism in the 21st century with the civil rights movement with Martin Luther King jr., the 19th amendment granting women the right to vote, and women's rights movements in the 1960s. But I was clearly blind to the amount of institutional sexism and racism that still take place in education systems, athletics, the workplace, media, health care systems etc. Such as girls receiving less teacher attention and less useful feedback than boys, girls not being seen as strong enough for certain sports, workers of color being concentrated in lower–paying jobs, members of ethnoracial minorities are less likely to have access to health insurance etc. I was fascinated with looking at the most common environments with a fresh pair of eyes and a different outlook on everyday life. Seeing how different the world I conjured up in my head is from reality was a wake up call for me to be more conscious of the unequal world we live in as well as the start of curiosity to understand how the world we live in works and why. I was always so oblivious to the inequalities that come with not being a male, but one of the important things I learned in this class was about the Get more content on HelpWriting.net

In this essay I am going to focus on racial identity and skin color. You are going to be reading about some things that I struggled with in my life being black and somewhat being different compared to everyone else. I will be comparing my stories to Sherman Alexie's experiences in life. Sherman Alexie is a indigenous american Poet, Short story writer and filmmaker who writes about his experiences that he had growing up because of his race or the way he looks. For this essay I am going to utilize "Indian Education" and two of my favorite stories by Sherman Alexie that I feel I can pertain to. In " Lone Ranger and Tonto fistfight in Heaven " Sherman walked into a corner store to and the employee assumed that he would be some sort of robber or that he would steal from the store. "'Can I help you?' The 7–11 clerk asked me loudly Searching for some response that I wasn't an armed robber." He experienced prejudice. You are going to read a somewhat similar story that I have experienced when I was younger, I ponder differently about the situation now from when I was younger.
