Leadership Development Plan
Goal: To become a successful Product Manager; lead teams using transformational leadership model; and network effectively with professionals of my
field.
I am new to the field of Product Management and while my previous experiences leverage this decision, it still remains a challenging proposition to
succeed in this field. In this regard, I am writing this leadership plan which will be my guiding force throughout my professional life. The document
will be updated as and when underlying goals are met and the bar of defining success extended.
The three most important competencies which I will strive to improve are: 1. Skills: * A competent product manager must have a diverse skillset and I

* The course taught me how to be an effective leader. I shall strive to include "intellectual stimulation" and "inspirational motivation" within my
leadership portfolio. * This shall be done by incorporating and incentivizing innovation driven environment. * 360 degree feedback (learnt through one
of the classroom discussion) shall quantify success made in implementing such an environment within the team. * Through the self–assessment on
Leadership style and Emotional intelligence, I drew the inference that while I am good at gauging the emotions of my direct reports and peers, I often
don't intervene to better cement my professional relationship. It shall be my earnest endeavor to be more emotionally aware and apathetic. * During a
discussion with my previous team leader Mr. Pradip Parmar, I should work more on improving my knowledge sharing skills within the team. I will try
to disseminate my domain knowledge by organizing weekly sessions in my team and involving team members to chip in with inputs.
Five year development plan and checkpoints: Year| Checkpoints| Intended Results| 1| * Take academic courses and read journal articles on product
management (Journal of Product Innovation Management) * Read literature on leadership * Request feedback from team members and career advisors
on both action points| * Take at least 5 academic courses on product management and read 5 articles

Essay on Management and Leadership
Successful organizations have strong leaders and managers that develop, support and encourage employee longevity within a company. There is a
significant difference between leadership and management however both skills have to be used collectively and both are important to a profitable
organization. Leadership is a notion of communicating an organization's vision, whereas management is more of the implementation of the
organization's vision. The manager typically carries out the responsibilities written by the organization and has a good team underneath them to carry
out the duties and meet the goals. Most companies have a mission statement that mirrors and supports a company's vision. When referring leadership

According to Hersey and Blanchard (1998), there are three areas required for effective leadership. Technical skills, which includes clinical expertise
and knowledge as it pertains to nursing. Secondly, human skills, which is the ability and judgment to work with people in leadership roles. And
lastly, conceptual skills which is the ability to understand the complexities of overall organization and figure out how and where one's own strengths
of management fits into the overall organization (Cherry, Jacob 2011). Leadership is unique compared to any other role because of its responsibility
for people. Good leaders are followed merely because they have gained people's trust and respect.
Management:
Management involves the tactical aspect of day to day functions and who keeps control of the work environment to make sure the organization is
moving forward and in the same direction of the company's vision. Managers are faced with many responsibilities each day, one of which is
managing people. The goal of a successful manager is to achieve the highest productivity of the organization by way of the people he/she manages. A
manager is more of a problem solver and takes care of work areas relating to people management, time management, decision making etc.
According to Lewin (1951) and White & Lippit (1960), there are three prevalent management behavior styles: Authoritarian, democratic and
laissez–fare (Cherry,

Leadership Is A Personal Journey Essay
The study of leadership teaches leaders about what motivates people to work. Thus, it's understood that all motivated employees, and team players
will be more productive. Therefore, the study of various theories and models of motivation, such as Maslow's hierarchy of needs model, and
Herzberg's two factor theory are carefully studied to improve leader's ability to motivate their employees. Also, studyingleadership enables leaders to
understand people and the work environment better. However, most importantly, the study of leadership is a personal journey. Helping a person to
develop their leadership potentials, which enables one to develop their leadership potentials. Therefore, understanding leadership is really learning
about understanding yourself. When I decided to take this leadership class. My expectations were to learn more about myself, how to effectively
communicate with difficult people, and become a better leader. My expectations were met. However, I have also learned that I need to develop my
interpersonal skills to bring people together. As I reflect over the leadership course, my weaknesses are a need to develop my interpersonal skills, and
having an introvert personality. Interpersonal skills are life skills that I use every day to communicate and interact with other people, both individually,
and in groups. Steps that I will take to improve my interpersonal skills are expressing more appreciation for team members and support staff, actively

What Is A Leader? Essay
What is a leader? When thinking about this question I feel like you have to really know what it means to be a leader. Webster Dictionary definition
is: a time when a person holds the position of a leader. No one is born a leader, leaderships skills comes from life experiences, education and
employment. Everyone grows into a leader and then afterwards grow into a leadership style that will eventually begin to shape and inspire other
leaders. Having a title or high above power does not make you a leader. Inspiring and providing great communication, confidence, advice, laughs,
knowledge, honesty and reality. Those great skills help you become a great leader. Even with these great leadership skills, there are many different
kinds of leadership styles.
"Becoming the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily; even if you had no title or position." –Brian Tracy
Are you a participative leader? Participative leaders or better known as democratic leaders include team members and others, but making the final
decision is up to the participative leader. Participative leaders build confidence and knowledge within team members because their inputs matter within
decision making. It helps team members think their opinions, help with decisions. If there is a change that needs to be implemented a participative
leader helps team members understand the change in a positive way. I would definitely consider myself a participative leader because I love gathering

Collaborative Leadership Essays
Collaborative Leadership Leadership can take many different forms, depending on the person and the situation in which it is needed. Collaborative
leadership is a leadership style in which a leader brings together a large group of people, with a variety of backgrounds, to make a productive decision
and act upon it. According to Chrislip and Larson (1994):
...they are the ones who have the credibility to get the right people together to create visions, solve problems, and reach agreements about
implementable actions. They are not the leaders who tell us what to do. Instead, they are the ones who help us work together constructively. (p. xx)

The discussion is an open–process, meaning that the decision making is done amongst the group members, not just the leader. Unlike an
authoritative leader, the leader of this group allows the members to be a part of his or her final say. By doing this, it helps to keep everyone on the
same page and moving forward in the same direction. Most every community organization functions best when collaborative leadership is in place, but
with any leadership style, there are advantages and disadvantages of using it. One of the first advantages of using collaborative leadership is the
buy–in among members of the group. When a leader makes use of collaboration, it gives the members a sense of ownership and value, which in turn
builds commitment to the organization. With this loyalty, the leader can then assume a greater willingness from the members to be involved in the
implementation of their final plan. Another advantage of using this leadership style is the high levels of trust building within the group. Being that this
is an open process, members are encouraged to speak and think freely without judgment from other members or the leader. In the words of Chrislip and
Larson (1994):
"It is a shift in the practice of democracy from hostility to civility, from advocacy to engagement, from confrontation to conversation, from debate to
dialogue, and from separation to community." (p. 4)
When members feel that their voices are heard, it can also help to

Essay Leadership and Change
Introduction "Not all leadership is about changing or challenging people's vision of the future" (Stanley, 2011, p. 57).
The term leadership can be applied to varying positions within healthcare, from management to the clinical setting. However, while those in a
management position may wear the title of "leader", this type of leadership can be far removed from that of a clinical leader. I believe that the above
quote by Stanley (2011) is true from the perspective that not all styles of leadership are instrumental in the changing or challenging of people's vision
of the future. This essay shall explore in closer detail the debate between management and leadership, in particular styles of leadership identified within

Transformational leaders are proactive; they encourage and facilitate change as they appeal to the ethics and beliefs of individuals to provide
motivation; they are able to enlist and enable followers who will support and drive their ideas; and they empower people to believe that their actions
can and will make a difference (Kouzes & Posner, 2007). Marquis & Houston (2012) identify communication and acknowledgement as being
a key quality behind successful transformational leadership as personal interaction is vital for employees to feel appreciated and part of a successful
team. This type of leadership has altered work environments for the better and has been associated with increases in patient outcomes, staff satisfaction
and retention levels (Kouzes & Posner, 2007).
Clinical leaders are establishing themselves as essential to any organisation valuing change as part of their improvement process (Davidson, 2010).
Clinical leaders deliver frontline patient care and are in the best possible position to co–ordinate, implement, drive and measure changes in practice that
will directly impact patient outcomes (Marquis & Houston, 2012). Davidson (2010) also describes clinical leaders as visionaries who strive to
improve clinical outcomes through their ability to influences changes in practice. Clinical leaders are recognized through their own actions, the

Leadership: The Human Vessel to the New Business Frontier
As our workforces grow more diverse every day, and customers are demanding better, faster, and less expensive service, companies are faced with the
challenges to create and meet the changes necessary to remain in business. The organizational environment must also learn to assess the direction of
these changes while also being able to respond successfully to those that roll in at a completely different direction than expected. The leadership
required to handle these wonderfully tumultuous times, so that organizations in transition remain profitable, is crucial.

With the unrelenting evolution of technology, organizational structures have had to be reinvented. No longer do we find the centralized, multi–layered
hierarchies that once offered organizations bureaucratic control over employees. Towering organizational structures are now collapsing into flatter
pyramids with wider spans of control offering greater flexibility, cost–efficiency, and more interdependent departments capable of rapid action and
reaction.
As with advances in technology, economic, political, and socio–cultural environments are also faced with swift changes. Unfortunately, such a rapid
rate of change can turn an organization’s strengths into its weaknesses. Leaders must now think like change agents, because the issue is
not only how new concepts and skills are acquired, but also how to unlearn things that are no longer serving the organization. This means that leaders
must carefully examine organizational cultures and then reinvent them to promote and maintain success.
The most important thing to understand, however, is that leaders cannot change culture arbitrarily in the sense of eradicating dysfunctional conditions.
By evolving culture they can build on its strengths while diminishing its weaknesses. “Culture is

What is Leadership? Essay
Leadership is a difficult word to define and according to the Miriam–Webster Dictionary leadership is the "office or position of a leader"
(Miriam–Webster, 2010). This definition is definitely not one that I would ascribe to when discussing leadership. My definition of leadership is "the
ability someone has to motivate and empower others to achieve a goal." Some may add to this definition, others may discard it altogether and have a
completely different definition. In the end, leadership takes on many different forms depending on who is doing the defining and we end up asking
ourselves, what is leadership and why do we care? J. Thomas Wren (1995) put together a book to help leaders define leadership for themselves. The

As Gardner (1990) points out "Most men and women go through their lives using no more than a fraction – usually a rather small fraction – of the
potentialities within them" (p. 7). I happen to agree with Gardner on this point. As a teacher you see numerous children who, with the proper training,
could be very great, positive leaders; yet due to their home situation or lack of self–confidence these children grow up never knowing they have that
possibility inside them. "We can do better. Much, much better" (Gardner, 1990 p. 7). Along with Gardner (1990) Wren introduces Burns (1978)
who wrote The Crisis of Leadership. Initially, I thought a crisis in leadership was happening today because according to Burns (1978) "One of the
most universal cravings of our time is a hunger for compelling and creative leadership" (p. 8). However, we need to keep in mind that Burns wrote
about this in 1978. So leadership and those who lead have been having problems for a number of decades. "If we know all too much about our
leader, we know far too little about leadership" (Burns, 1978 p. 9). What Burns was trying to bring to the forefront was the idea that we, as a public,
know far too much about the personal lives of our leaders. The media has been able to bring personal situations into our homes that we would not

According to Yukl (2006), much of the skill essential for effective leadership is learned from experience rather than from formal training programs. A
lifetime learner is accepting that you are never finished educating yourself and by continuing to educate yourself, you become self–aware that learning
is an ongoing process that cannot be completed. According to Yukl (2006), leadership training can take many forms, from short workshops that last
only a few hours and focus on a narrow set of skills, to programs that last for a year or more and cover a wide range of skills.
The leader that I am today is confident but still inexperienced. I still have plenty to learn in order to be the leader I want to be in the future. I want
to be a leader who is always striving for perfection and always keeping an open mind to the possibility of change and new leadership techniques.
Nahavandi states (2006), despite our knowledge, there is also much we still do not know. Leadership as we traditionally know it–command and
control–does not address the rapid social, cultural, and organizational changes that are occurring globally (Nahavandi, 2006). This is why we need to
be always vigilant and open minded to the new theories that are always being introduced in this global society. According to Nahavandi (2006), future

What is Leadership?
Leadership is defined as the position of a leader, the ability to lead. I assure you it is much more then that. Being a leader is not easy, I have learned
from personal experience. Being a captain of a football team is hard work. It takes guts to stand up and be a leader. Leadership is respect. Respect by
others. You can't force people to respect you; you've got to earn it. A good leader earns respect from his, or her, peers. They know he is their leader
and when he tells them to do something, they do it, and they respect his position. A captain deserves respect from his teammates. The respect your
team has for you helps drive your team to do their...show more content...
When he yells, he strikes fear into his comrades. Along with leading by example, a captain should be able to speak up. When a teammate is harming
the team he should speak up and let them know to stop what they are doing or to leave. A leader shouldn't be quite and expect people to listen and
follow them, he needs to speak up and take action.
Finally, Leadership is work. A leader works harder than anyone else and they know they need to do so. A captain knows that he has to push
himself to work above everyone else. He should run faster, hit harder, and block better than anyone else on the team. If a captain works harder
than anyone else, then everything comes together. He earns respect; he takes responsibility, and leads by example. Believe me, being a leader is
not an easy job. If you can accomplish all these things then you can be a true leader. From my own experience, being a captain is not easy. Even I
struggle with these qualities. The pressure of being a leader of is overwhelming, and takes hard work to accomplish. "Leaders are made, they are not
born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile," by Vince

My Leadership Lessons Learned
Upon finishing this course, I have learned an important lesson to be a manager and a leader of my own life to lead others successfully. First, I have
learned to manage and align my actions with my core values because that will bring the satisfaction and fulfillment to what I do; this approach will
reflect positively on my work ethics and standard of care toward patients and coworkers. The second lesson I have attained is to manage life
boundaries intelligently and integrate my work and my life successfully; which was clearly stated in module one upon discussing leadership and
management in correlation to problem–solving, decision making, and critical thinking. The third lesson I have liberated as a manager I have to
embrace changes courageously and adapt to any situation that is not in my comfort zone; module two emphasizes that changes will fulfill the
management role; yet a good leader is always perceptive and open to changes and view it as an opportunity for growth and development....show more

professional attitude, technology utilization, and viewing the role of manager form different perspective. The emphasis on understanding the fact that
the success of any organization is highly focused on the success of its leader/manager. This has made me realize how important for thenurse manager to

Leadership – what is it? Many definitions have been offered, cultural stereotypes abound, numerous programs focus on leadership development, but the
question remains. In fact, leadership is many different things to different people in different circumstances. When we think ofleadership, we often think
first of famous individuals. We may think of great political leaders: Washington, Churchill, Roosevelt. We may think of the leaders of social
movements: Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Caesar Chavez. We may think of spiritual leaders: Jesus, Mohammed, Mother Theresa. Do we also include

In Leadership Is an Art (1989), De Pree asserts that "the first responsibility of a leader is to define reality". Bennis (1990) writes that leaders
"manage the dream" . Vision is defined as "the force which molds meaning for the people of an organization" by Manasse (1986).
According to Manasse, this aspect of leadership is "visionary leadership" and includes four different types of vision: organization, future, personal,
and strategic. Organizational vision involves having a complete picture of a system's components as well as an understanding of their
interrelationships. "Future vision is a comprehensive picture of how an organization will look at some point in the future, including how it will be
positioned in its environment and how it will function internally" (Manasse, 1986). Personal vision includes the leader's personal aspirations for the
organization and acts as the impetus for the leader's actions that will link organizational and future vision. "Strategic vision involves connecting the
reality of the present (organizational vision) to the possibilities of the future (future vision) in a unique way (personal vision) that is appropriate for
the organization and its leader" (Manasse, 1986). A leader's vision needs to be shared by those who will be involved in the realization of the vision.

In addition to knowing who I am, I must continually practice and refresh my skills to become an effective leader. In his article, Kotter (2001) has

vision and embrace change. Kotter's work has given me a clear understanding of where to exercise my leadership skills when they are called for. I
have been working in a management position for almost 12 years, but this article allowed me to fully appreciate that a manager's role might vary
while overseeing the operations of a unit, whereas a leader must be able to assist those who follow him or her through an organization's constant

respective practices. First, Matt Quinn, in his lecture shared his experiences on changing a disruptive unit into a unit that fosters teamwork. As a novice
manager, Quinn was able to influence a culture of change in his unit. His moral values and professional responsibilities acted as his foundation when
he was making decisions for certain patient care situations. He shared the importance of fostering a trusting relationship between the staff and the

Leadership : What Is Leadership?
What is leadership? Having good leadership is necessary for any organization. Definitions of leadership are varied. It is a fundamental element within
society that has attracted the interest of thousands of scientists, historians, and philosophers for hundreds of years, yet none of them can decide upon its
meaning. Cook (2000) calls leadership the "ability to learn and adapt to change, a risk taker and using personal powers to win the hearts and minds
of people to achieve a common purpose." Northouse (2010) claims leadership is change and movement. Burns (1978) defines leadership as "a
mobilization process by individuals with certain motives, values, and access to resources in a context of competition and conflict in pursuit of goals"
For my purposes, leadership is merely managing knowledge in a way that leads to creating and sharing knowledge within an organization (Chi, Lan, &
Dorjgotov, 2012). The success of leadership in organizations often varies significantly and identifying leadership styles that suit an organization best is
an essential skill in any CEO, manager, director, or alike.
THEORY AND APPROACH
Transformational Leadership
There are countless theories about leadership that have been sorted and organized into several precise approaches or styles based on traits, behaviors,
situational factors, or culture factors. In the 1970s, James MacGregor Burns developed a more complex approach to leadership which he called

What Leadership Means to Me Essay
My idea of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect others, and of course, lead by example. A leader
must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able
to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. In my opinion, this can build confidence in
their followers to have faith in you, in order to be able to lead. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born. If you have the desire
and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders are developed through a never ending process of self–study, education, training, and

The way in which I communicate either builds or can harm the relationship between my soldier and I. When an important moment of discussion
arises, I am always prepared to appropriately handle the situation at hand. More than anything else, I believe as a leader it is always important to
have great social skills in order to be communicative with clarity and objectiveness, and to have a good relationship with the ones I lead. As a
leader, I understand the meaning of recognition and praise when one is doing a good job, which too is significantly important. A leader is not
always the first to have an idea, but should be the one who is always seeking out new solutions. One way of being a productive leader is
discovering new ways to accomplish a set of tasks while maintaining a positive attitude. If a soldier is demonstrating a bad attitude because he feels
that he can not accomplish a task then my job as a leader, would be to steadily encourage that soldier to work at being all that he can be. A leader to
me, does not need to always know the answer, but believes it to be important to have the initiative to make an answer appear. One form of bad
leadership would be an NCO performing or demonstrating a task that he knows nothing about in front of his soldiers. In the result of the NCO not
performing or demonstrating the task at hand correctly, the soldiers then become incapable of knowing the proper ways of that task. However, if that

In business, leadership is "the ability to influence employees to voluntarily pursue organizational goals." Leadership is one of the many assets a

leader is able listen to her staff and communicates where they need to go to meet the goals of the organization. This requires listening but also

Synthesis Paper : Leadership And Leadership
Synthesis Paper: Leadership Introduction Over the years, a great deal of time, and research has been dedicate to the study of leadership. Even with
extensive data on the topic, many still disagree on what leadership really means. Hence, leadership is a word that has many different meanings and
different researched theories associated with it. On a basic level, leadership involves having and establishing a clear vision, sharing that vision with
followers, respecting followers, and leading an organization with excellence while ensuring that everyone is part of the team. Leadership is also a
method by which a leader uses his or her influence towards getting a group of followers to take ownership or buy into a vision. Effectiveness of

simply suggests that dissimilar leadership styles are applicable in different situations. In order to be effective, one must possess an array of skills,

Leadership Portfolio

  • 1. Leadership Portfolio Leadership Development Plan Goal: To become a successful Product Manager; lead teams using transformational leadership model; and network effectively with professionals of my field. I am new to the field of Product Management and while my previous experiences leverage this decision, it still remains a challenging proposition to succeed in this field. In this regard, I am writing this leadership plan which will be my guiding force throughout my professional life. The document will be updated as and when underlying goals are met and the bar of defining success extended. The three most important competencies which I will strive to improve are: 1. Skills: * A competent product manager must have a diverse skillset and I plan on...show more content... * The course taught me how to be an effective leader. I shall strive to include "intellectual stimulation" and "inspirational motivation" within my leadership portfolio. * This shall be done by incorporating and incentivizing innovation driven environment. * 360 degree feedback (learnt through one of the classroom discussion) shall quantify success made in implementing such an environment within the team. * Through the self–assessment on Leadership style and Emotional intelligence, I drew the inference that while I am good at gauging the emotions of my direct reports and peers, I often don't intervene to better cement my professional relationship. It shall be my earnest endeavor to be more emotionally aware and apathetic. * During a discussion with my previous team leader Mr. Pradip Parmar, I should work more on improving my knowledge sharing skills within the team. I will try to disseminate my domain knowledge by organizing weekly sessions in my team and involving team members to chip in with inputs. Five year development plan and checkpoints: Year| Checkpoints| Intended Results| 1| * Take academic courses and read journal articles on product management (Journal of Product Innovation Management) * Read literature on leadership * Request feedback from team members and career advisors on both action points| * Take at least 5 academic courses on product management and read 5 articles Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay on Management and Leadership Successful organizations have strong leaders and managers that develop, support and encourage employee longevity within a company. There is a significant difference between leadership and management however both skills have to be used collectively and both are important to a profitable organization. Leadership is a notion of communicating an organization's vision, whereas management is more of the implementation of the organization's vision. The manager typically carries out the responsibilities written by the organization and has a good team underneath them to carry out the duties and meet the goals. Most companies have a mission statement that mirrors and supports a company's vision. When referring leadership and management, the two...show more content... According to Hersey and Blanchard (1998), there are three areas required for effective leadership. Technical skills, which includes clinical expertise and knowledge as it pertains to nursing. Secondly, human skills, which is the ability and judgment to work with people in leadership roles. And lastly, conceptual skills which is the ability to understand the complexities of overall organization and figure out how and where one's own strengths of management fits into the overall organization (Cherry, Jacob 2011). Leadership is unique compared to any other role because of its responsibility for people. Good leaders are followed merely because they have gained people's trust and respect. Management: Management involves the tactical aspect of day to day functions and who keeps control of the work environment to make sure the organization is moving forward and in the same direction of the company's vision. Managers are faced with many responsibilities each day, one of which is managing people. The goal of a successful manager is to achieve the highest productivity of the organization by way of the people he/she manages. A manager is more of a problem solver and takes care of work areas relating to people management, time management, decision making etc. According to Lewin (1951) and White & Lippit (1960), there are three prevalent management behavior styles: Authoritarian, democratic and laissez–fare (Cherry, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Leadership Is A Personal Journey Essay The study of leadership teaches leaders about what motivates people to work. Thus, it's understood that all motivated employees, and team players will be more productive. Therefore, the study of various theories and models of motivation, such as Maslow's hierarchy of needs model, and Herzberg's two factor theory are carefully studied to improve leader's ability to motivate their employees. Also, studyingleadership enables leaders to understand people and the work environment better. However, most importantly, the study of leadership is a personal journey. Helping a person to develop their leadership potentials, which enables one to develop their leadership potentials. Therefore, understanding leadership is really learning about understanding yourself. When I decided to take this leadership class. My expectations were to learn more about myself, how to effectively communicate with difficult people, and become a better leader. My expectations were met. However, I have also learned that I need to develop my interpersonal skills to bring people together. As I reflect over the leadership course, my weaknesses are a need to develop my interpersonal skills, and having an introvert personality. Interpersonal skills are life skills that I use every day to communicate and interact with other people, both individually, and in groups. Steps that I will take to improve my interpersonal skills are expressing more appreciation for team members and support staff, actively listen, slow to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. What Is A Leader? Essay What is a leader? When thinking about this question I feel like you have to really know what it means to be a leader. Webster Dictionary definition is: a time when a person holds the position of a leader. No one is born a leader, leaderships skills comes from life experiences, education and employment. Everyone grows into a leader and then afterwards grow into a leadership style that will eventually begin to shape and inspire other leaders. Having a title or high above power does not make you a leader. Inspiring and providing great communication, confidence, advice, laughs, knowledge, honesty and reality. Those great skills help you become a great leader. Even with these great leadership skills, there are many different kinds of leadership styles. "Becoming the kind of leader that people would follow voluntarily; even if you had no title or position." –Brian Tracy Are you a participative leader? Participative leaders or better known as democratic leaders include team members and others, but making the final decision is up to the participative leader. Participative leaders build confidence and knowledge within team members because their inputs matter within decision making. It helps team members think their opinions, help with decisions. If there is a change that needs to be implemented a participative leader helps team members understand the change in a positive way. I would definitely consider myself a participative leader because I love gathering as many Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Collaborative Leadership Essays Collaborative Leadership Leadership can take many different forms, depending on the person and the situation in which it is needed. Collaborative leadership is a leadership style in which a leader brings together a large group of people, with a variety of backgrounds, to make a productive decision and act upon it. According to Chrislip and Larson (1994): ...they are the ones who have the credibility to get the right people together to create visions, solve problems, and reach agreements about implementable actions. They are not the leaders who tell us what to do. Instead, they are the ones who help us work together constructively. (p. xx) This paper is intended to explain where collaborative leadership is used, what characteristics it...show more content... The discussion is an open–process, meaning that the decision making is done amongst the group members, not just the leader. Unlike an authoritative leader, the leader of this group allows the members to be a part of his or her final say. By doing this, it helps to keep everyone on the same page and moving forward in the same direction. Most every community organization functions best when collaborative leadership is in place, but with any leadership style, there are advantages and disadvantages of using it. One of the first advantages of using collaborative leadership is the buy–in among members of the group. When a leader makes use of collaboration, it gives the members a sense of ownership and value, which in turn builds commitment to the organization. With this loyalty, the leader can then assume a greater willingness from the members to be involved in the implementation of their final plan. Another advantage of using this leadership style is the high levels of trust building within the group. Being that this is an open process, members are encouraged to speak and think freely without judgment from other members or the leader. In the words of Chrislip and Larson (1994): "It is a shift in the practice of democracy from hostility to civility, from advocacy to engagement, from confrontation to conversation, from debate to dialogue, and from separation to community." (p. 4) When members feel that their voices are heard, it can also help to Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Essay Leadership and Change Introduction "Not all leadership is about changing or challenging people's vision of the future" (Stanley, 2011, p. 57). The term leadership can be applied to varying positions within healthcare, from management to the clinical setting. However, while those in a management position may wear the title of "leader", this type of leadership can be far removed from that of a clinical leader. I believe that the above quote by Stanley (2011) is true from the perspective that not all styles of leadership are instrumental in the changing or challenging of people's vision of the future. This essay shall explore in closer detail the debate between management and leadership, in particular styles of leadership identified within the management and...show more content... Transformational leaders are proactive; they encourage and facilitate change as they appeal to the ethics and beliefs of individuals to provide motivation; they are able to enlist and enable followers who will support and drive their ideas; and they empower people to believe that their actions can and will make a difference (Kouzes & Posner, 2007). Marquis & Houston (2012) identify communication and acknowledgement as being a key quality behind successful transformational leadership as personal interaction is vital for employees to feel appreciated and part of a successful team. This type of leadership has altered work environments for the better and has been associated with increases in patient outcomes, staff satisfaction and retention levels (Kouzes & Posner, 2007). Clinical leaders are establishing themselves as essential to any organisation valuing change as part of their improvement process (Davidson, 2010). Clinical leaders deliver frontline patient care and are in the best possible position to co–ordinate, implement, drive and measure changes in practice that will directly impact patient outcomes (Marquis & Houston, 2012). Davidson (2010) also describes clinical leaders as visionaries who strive to improve clinical outcomes through their ability to influences changes in practice. • 7. Essay on Leadership Leadership: The Human Vessel to the New Business Frontier As our workforces grow more diverse every day, and customers are demanding better, faster, and less expensive service, companies are faced with the challenges to create and meet the changes necessary to remain in business. The organizational environment must also learn to assess the direction of these changes while also being able to respond successfully to those that roll in at a completely different direction than expected. The leadership required to handle these wonderfully tumultuous times, so that organizations in transition remain profitable, is crucial. Today’s companies become successful based on...show more content... With the unrelenting evolution of technology, organizational structures have had to be reinvented. No longer do we find the centralized, multi–layered hierarchies that once offered organizations bureaucratic control over employees. Towering organizational structures are now collapsing into flatter pyramids with wider spans of control offering greater flexibility, cost–efficiency, and more interdependent departments capable of rapid action and reaction. As with advances in technology, economic, political, and socio–cultural environments are also faced with swift changes. Unfortunately, such a rapid rate of change can turn an organization’s strengths into its weaknesses. Leaders must now think like change agents, because the issue is not only how new concepts and skills are acquired, but also how to unlearn things that are no longer serving the organization. This means that leaders must carefully examine organizational cultures and then reinvent them to promote and maintain success. The most important thing to understand, however, is that leaders cannot change culture arbitrarily in the sense of eradicating dysfunctional conditions. By evolving culture they can build on its strengths while diminishing its weaknesses. “Culture is ‘changed’…through changes in various key concepts in the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. What is Leadership? Essay Leadership is a difficult word to define and according to the Miriam–Webster Dictionary leadership is the "office or position of a leader" (Miriam–Webster, 2010). This definition is definitely not one that I would ascribe to when discussing leadership. My definition of leadership is "the ability someone has to motivate and empower others to achieve a goal." Some may add to this definition, others may discard it altogether and have a completely different definition. In the end, leadership takes on many different forms depending on who is doing the defining and we end up asking ourselves, what is leadership and why do we care? J. Thomas Wren (1995) put together a book to help leaders define leadership for themselves. The Leader's...show more content... As Gardner (1990) points out "Most men and women go through their lives using no more than a fraction – usually a rather small fraction – of the potentialities within them" (p. 7). I happen to agree with Gardner on this point. As a teacher you see numerous children who, with the proper training, could be very great, positive leaders; yet due to their home situation or lack of self–confidence these children grow up never knowing they have that possibility inside them. "We can do better. Much, much better" (Gardner, 1990 p. 7). Along with Gardner (1990) Wren introduces Burns (1978) who wrote The Crisis of Leadership. Initially, I thought a crisis in leadership was happening today because according to Burns (1978) "One of the most universal cravings of our time is a hunger for compelling and creative leadership" (p. 8). However, we need to keep in mind that Burns wrote about this in 1978. So leadership and those who lead have been having problems for a number of decades. "If we know all too much about our leader, we know far too little about leadership" (Burns, 1978 p. 9). What Burns was trying to bring to the forefront was the idea that we, as a public, know far too much about the personal lives of our leaders. The media has been able to bring personal situations into our homes that we would not otherwise be Get more content on HelpWriting.net

According to Yukl (2006), much of the skill essential for effective leadership is learned from experience rather than from formal training programs. A lifetime learner is accepting that you are never finished educating yourself and by continuing to educate yourself, you become self–aware that learning is an ongoing process that cannot be completed. According to Yukl (2006), leadership training can take many forms, from short workshops that last only a few hours and focus on a narrow set of skills, to programs that last for a year or more and cover a wide range of skills. The leader that I am today is confident but still inexperienced. I still have plenty to learn in order to be the leader I want to be in the future. I want to be a leader who is always striving for perfection and always keeping an open mind to the possibility of change and new leadership techniques. Nahavandi states (2006), despite our knowledge, there is also much we still do not know. Leadership as we traditionally know it–command and control–does not address the rapid social, cultural, and organizational changes that are occurring globally (Nahavandi, 2006). This is why we need to be always vigilant and open minded to the new theories that are always being introduced in this global society. According to Nahavandi (2006), future

  • 11. Definition Essay Leadership Domenick Caruso November 14th 2010 Personal Essay What is Leadership? Leadership is defined as the position of a leader, the ability to lead. I assure you it is much more then that. Being a leader is not easy, I have learned from personal experience. Being a captain of a football team is hard work. It takes guts to stand up and be a leader. Leadership is respect. Respect by others. You can't force people to respect you; you've got to earn it. A good leader earns respect from his, or her, peers. They know he is their leader and when he tells them to do something, they do it, and they respect his position. A captain deserves respect from his teammates. The respect your team has for you helps drive your team to do their...show more content... When he yells, he strikes fear into his comrades. Along with leading by example, a captain should be able to speak up. When a teammate is harming the team he should speak up and let them know to stop what they are doing or to leave. A leader shouldn't be quite and expect people to listen and follow them, he needs to speak up and take action. Finally, Leadership is work. A leader works harder than anyone else and they know they need to do so. A captain knows that he has to push himself to work above everyone else. He should run faster, hit harder, and block better than anyone else on the team. If a captain works harder than anyone else, then everything comes together. He earns respect; he takes responsibility, and leads by example. Believe me, being a leader is not an easy job. If you can accomplish all these things then you can be a true leader. From my own experience, being a captain is not easy. Even I struggle with these qualities. The pressure of being a leader of is overwhelming, and takes hard work to accomplish. First, I have learned to manage and align my actions with my core values because that will bring the satisfaction and fulfillment to what I do; this approach will reflect positively on my work ethics and standard of care toward patients and coworkers. The second lesson I have attained is to manage life boundaries intelligently and integrate my work and my life successfully; which was clearly stated in module one upon discussing leadership and management in correlation to problem–solving, decision making, and critical thinking. The third lesson I have liberated as a manager I have to embrace changes courageously and adapt to any situation that is not in my comfort zone; module two emphasizes that changes will fulfill the management role; yet a good leader is always perceptive and open to changes and view it as an opportunity for growth and development....show more content... We may think of great political leaders: Washington, Churchill, Roosevelt. We may think of the leaders of social movements: Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Caesar Chavez. We may think of spiritual leaders: Jesus, Mohammed, Mother Theresa. Do we also include in our definition some of the infamous leaders such as Hitler, Stalin, or David Koresh? Bennis (1990) writes that leaders "manage the dream" . Vision is defined as "the force which molds meaning for the people of an organization" by Manasse (1986). According to Manasse, this aspect of leadership is "visionary leadership" and includes four different types of vision: organization, future, personal, and strategic. Organizational vision involves having a complete picture of a system's components as well as an understanding of their interrelationships. "Future vision is a comprehensive picture of how an organization will look at some point in the future, including how it will be positioned in its environment and how it will function internally" (Manasse, 1986). Personal vision includes the leader's personal aspirations for the organization and acts as the impetus for the leader's actions that will link organizational and future vision. "Strategic vision involves connecting the reality of the present (organizational vision) to the possibilities of the future (future vision) in a unique way (personal vision) that is appropriate for the organization and its leader" (Manasse, 1986). A leader's vision needs to be shared by those who will be involved in the realization of the vision. Shared Vision. An important Get more content on HelpWriting.net

My father has served in the Philippine military and the Philippine government most of his life, and my mother was a dedicated nurse midwife and professor at a university hospital. Serving and caring for people has become second nature to my family. My father was strict and a disciplinarian; he did not allow my family to be out of the house after 6:00 p.m. He believed that it was important to have every member of the family home for dinner. It was from him that I learned the value of self–discipline, respect, and the importance of good education. Meanwhile, my mother was the go–to person for most of our relatives and family friends. In his article, Kotter (2001) has differentiated the roles of a manager from those of a leader. A manager organizes and promotes stability, while leaders inspire others to achieve a vision and embrace change. Kotter's work has given me a clear understanding of where to exercise my leadership skills when they are called for. I have been working in a management position for almost 12 years, but this article allowed me to fully appreciate that a manager's role might vary while overseeing the operations of a unit, whereas a leader must be able to assist those who follow him or her through an organization's constant changes. The Advanced Leadership course also allowed me to interact with three greatnurse leaders who are passionate about and successful in their respective practices. First, Matt Quinn, in his lecture shared his experiences on changing a disruptive unit into a unit that fosters teamwork. As a novice manager, Quinn was able to influence a culture of change in his unit. His moral values and professional responsibilities acted as his foundation when he was making decisions for certain patient care situations. He shared the importance of fostering a trusting relationship between the staff and the manager and the importance of collaborative work in order to deliver the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 15. Leadership : What Is Leadership? What is leadership? Having good leadership is necessary for any organization. Definitions of leadership are varied. It is a fundamental element within society that has attracted the interest of thousands of scientists, historians, and philosophers for hundreds of years, yet none of them can decide upon its meaning. Cook (2000) calls leadership the "ability to learn and adapt to change, a risk taker and using personal powers to win the hearts and minds of people to achieve a common purpose." Northouse (2010) claims leadership is change and movement. Burns (1978) defines leadership as "a mobilization process by individuals with certain motives, values, and access to resources in a context of competition and conflict in pursuit of goals" For my purposes, leadership is merely managing knowledge in a way that leads to creating and sharing knowledge within an organization (Chi, Lan, & Dorjgotov, 2012). The success of leadership in organizations often varies significantly and identifying leadership styles that suit an organization best is an essential skill in any CEO, manager, director, or alike. THEORY AND APPROACH Transformational Leadership There are countless theories about leadership that have been sorted and organized into several precise approaches or styles based on traits, behaviors, situational factors, or culture factors. In the 1970s, James MacGregor Burns developed a more complex approach to leadership which he called transformational leadership. The goals of Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 16. What Leadership Means to Me Essay My idea of leadership is being able to inspire others, motivate, set a vision, communicate, respect others, and of course, lead by example. A leader must have an honest understanding of who they are, what they know, and what they are capable of. To be a successful leader, you have to be able to convince your followers, not just yourself or your superiors, that you are worthy of being followed. In my opinion, this can build confidence in their followers to have faith in you, in order to be able to lead. I strongly believe that good leaders are made rather, and not born. If you have the desire and willpower, you can become an effective leader. Good leaders are developed through a never ending process of self–study, education, training, and ...show more content... The way in which I communicate either builds or can harm the relationship between my soldier and I. When an important moment of discussion arises, I am always prepared to appropriately handle the situation at hand. More than anything else, I believe as a leader it is always important to have great social skills in order to be communicative with clarity and objectiveness, and to have a good relationship with the ones I lead. As a leader, I understand the meaning of recognition and praise when one is doing a good job, which too is significantly important. A leader is not always the first to have an idea, but should be the one who is always seeking out new solutions. One way of being a productive leader is discovering new ways to accomplish a set of tasks while maintaining a positive attitude. If a soldier is demonstrating a bad attitude because he feels that he can not accomplish a task then my job as a leader, would be to steadily encourage that soldier to work at being all that he can be. A leader to me, does not need to always know the answer, but believes it to be important to have the initiative to make an answer appear. One form of bad leadership would be an NCO performing or demonstrating a task that he knows nothing about in front of his soldiers. In the result of the NCO not performing or demonstrating the task at hand correctly, the soldiers then become incapable of knowing the proper ways of that task. However, if that NCO had Get more content on HelpWriting.net

This requires listening but also speaking in a way that can be easily understood, so that everyone on the team knows what the goals are and how to meet them. She took the time to know us as individuals and took an interest in our personal lives. People want to know that they matter and that they have an opportunity to express that value in their work and actions (Porter–O'Grady & Malloch, 2007).
