Essay about Culture Clash
"Culture Clash"
I am a born Vietnamese, and Chinese American. For more than a decade I have made many friends coming from diverse cultures. I recall one friend
back in high school that demonstrated the importance of one's own private culture, and language. From this experience with my friend, Hong, I realized
that families who had a strong cultural, and language practice at home had a very stable and functional family. Individuals who embrace their culture,
and language broadly tend to pass on the wisdom of a rich culture on to the next generation. Hong's family demonstrated how out of sync, I was with
my own language and culture. My family was losing its Vietnamese roots....show more content...
As a result the family was in a stable condition. During this time my family had problems. My brother and I would speak English 75% percent of the
time, while my mother would speak both languages, my father speaking Vietnamese. At dinner we would socialize about many subjects, and our daily
lives. My father would talk in Vietnamese about his work, and I would talk about my day in English. My dad was not fluent in English, so he had a
difficult time interpreting, and understanding what I was saying. Points could not be proven effectively, and it made situations extremely frustrating.
As a result it flared up conflicts in language interpretation. The feedback we gave to each other was disorganized, and confusing. Our family was not
functioning well in terms of communication.
Every year in February my culture celebrates a New Year such as the Vietnamese New Year. The Chinese New Year, and the Vietnamese New Year
are identical to each other. In the Chinese, and Vietnamese New Year relatives, friends, and families get together, and give out money. My family
got used to not celebrating our cultural New Year. Every time the New Year would come around, no one would mention it. The Chinese New Year
slowly became like any other day. Hong's family would throw a huge New Year's party. His relatives would drop by to socialize with his family in
Chinese. I would see his grandmother, grandfather, parents, and other relatives give out

Essay on Cultural Globalization
Globalisation and global flows of culture have redefined the processes in which we share and connect to ourselves, others, and the world. From its
onset, globalisation had both proponents' and critics; some believed that it leads to a rich, hybrid global culture. Others saw it as the west versus the
rest, an imprint of Western values and ideologies upon the world's rich and diverse cultures. In exploring global flows ofculture, we can observe these
major assumptions about globalisation as well as its changing nature. New, 'reverse' cultural flows have begun to emerge and question these traditional
assumptions. The case study of Japan's 'pink globalisation' is one such reverse flow.
Globalisation can take on many different shapes and...show more content...
Appadurai terms these global flows as 'scapes', in which media, technology and ideology circulate broadly around the globe. The forces behind this
new global imagination and its scapes are no longer nation states but global media corporations. Accelerated by the dawn of the internet and an
opening up of transnational borders for economic trade in the 1990's, global media corporations have rapidly penetrated overseas markets with
products aimed at consumers in what could be seen as a cultural ideology of consumerism. Cultural globalisation is no longer a case of
Americanisation, but rather multiple, competing globalisations of global media corporations. Henry Jenkins observed the impact of these global
media corporations which he described as 'corporate convergence.' In addition, we also see a 'grassroots convergence,' in which fans armed with new
technologies capable of crossing borders (such as the internet) prescribe to new forms of popular culture. Jenkins observed this convergence coupling
as 'pop cosmopolitanism.' This notion of pop cosmopolitanism explains the rise in popularity of a new, reverse flow, in which Japanese popular culture
products are being disseminated across the globe.
To demonstrate the active way in which media is appropriated by people

Definition of Culture Essay
With a diverse population existing in the United States today, our country is a melting pot of different cultures, each one unique in its own respect.
Culture, distinguishing one societal group from another, includes beliefs, behaviors, language, traditions, art, fashion styles, food, religion, politics, and
economic systems. Through lifelong and ever changing processes of learning, creativity, and sharing, culture shapes our patterns of behavior and
thinking. A culture?s significance is so profound that it touches almost every aspect of who and what we are. ?Culture becomes the lens through which
we perceive and evaluate what is going on around us? (Henslin, 1993).
Trying to define the complex term of culture with varying...show more content...
Her accent and the non–visible facial expressions create a barrier for comprehending the communication. Later, as the service for the woman
progresses, her beliefs, values, and norms of her culture are dispelled. For example, in order for the woman to show her face to another male in public,
she must first request permission from her husband to unveil. During further discussion, it becomes even more apparent, that this Iranian woman is
subservient and possesses a lower level of status than that of Iranian males. All of these characteristics are indicative of this woman?s culture.
As conveyed in the above description, the characteristics represent the unique symbols of one?s culture. Symbols, in representative form of
communication, art, expressions, materials, and so on, allow a cultural group to develop complex thoughts and to exchange those thoughts with each
other. Through the exchanging of symbols, one?s cultural ideas, beliefs, and values, are passed on from one generation to the next.
People are not born with culture; they have to learn it. Throughout the development of the entire life span, culture is learned from the society in which
we live. Furthermore, in the diverse population of the United States, ethnic groups or societies will have to interact with other groups outside the
realm of their individual self. In order to do so, it is necessary for the societies to exchange languages, ideas, or even,

Mass Media And Culture Essay
It is interesting that Raymond Williams creates a division between high class culture and lower class culture, suggesting that culture is ordinary,
shared and common. If this is the case why does he emphasise a division in light of this concept? And if we all share a common culture can there be a
division?
It is difficult to understand the term culture. What is culture? Is it a utopian dream, is it a shared group of interests that bring a community together, or
is it just simply a way of life? There are so many questions surrounding culture and its meaning. Raymond Williams described culture as "maps of
meaning through which the world is made intelligible", whether we agree with this definition or not, he was right in saying that the...show more

But before I discuss Internet culture it is imperative that I decipher the essence of mass culture and mass media. To understand the term "mass", it
is important to study Gustave Lebon. Although there have been many more recent theorists that have discussed the term "mass"; including Karl
Max, John Stuart Mills and Mathew Arnold, Lebon's theories on "mass" have pervaded disputes on the subject ever since. A quote specifically
that is questioned today is his warning that "the age we are about to enter will in truth be the era of crowds" ([1895] 1916, p. 3), at a time when
working class parties were more present and when western societies were dealing with the growth of industrialisation and mass migration to popular
cities. His book "La psychologie des foules" was cited for its treatise to crowds, however is much more about the advent of mass society in
physiological terms. He discusses "contagion, loss of individuality, and regression to a more primitive mental state were his favourite terms". The
reason for the book being described as a treatise for the mass is his connotation of crowd behaviour within a larger mass. For example Lebon quotes,
"thousands of isolated individuals may acquire at certain moments, and under the influence of certain violent emotions – such, for example, as a great
national event – the characteristics of a psychological crowd". However, the mere coming together of a crowd is not sufficient enough to cause the
disappearance of the conscious

Reflection On Culture
We as people define the word culture as "the integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for learning
and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generation" according to Merriam Dictionary. Culture surrounds and affects us in every way. The way we
think, speak and act is due to culture. When we as individuals venture off into different geographic areas we must be willing to partake in their
culture because if we don't it is viewed as insulting. For example, In China when greeting someone you are required to bow your head because it's a
sign of respect towards the other person. If you do not bow your head its seen as a sign of disrespect and you are in a sense socially exiled. Culture is

At school, kids made fun of my African culture, even the very food that I ate. My mom would make Jollof rice for my lunch and I was ashamed to eat
it even though it was a dish I loved. The children in the class would refer to me as African booty scratcher, the lion chaser, and midnight. I started to
find myself in a state of depression. The children did not accept my culture neither were they willing too! I ate lunch alone almost every day and had
zero friends. It wasn't until high school that I started making friends. The only reason I made friends was because I learned how to adapt to their
culture and way of life. I started to dress like American children, and talk like them also.
When I was younger, boys in high school loved to wear the Jordan and Nike brands. As a teenager, I applied for a job and saved my money and
bought those brands not to mentioned that I saved some of my hardworking money as well. One thing that I noticed after I started wearing these
brands was acceptance into their culture. No longer was I an outsider, but I had now become part of this group. Looking back at my past I've
realized that everyone is looking for acceptance. Although many people say to be your own person, it is hard to be your own person in a society with
a culture foreign to yours. Culture is a custom associated with regions, places and even neighborhoods. If you cannot learn to adapt to a certain

Culture, Culture And Culture Essay
Culture
Many times we hear concepts like 'Oriental culture', 'Italian culture' or 'Gothic Culture'. So we can understand and verify that it is an important
concept related to the idea of the society where we live in. Culture, in Sociology, is a concept developed during XVIII and XIX centuries that has had
various definitions.
One exhaustive definition is in Browne (2015, p. 31):
"Culture refers to the language, beliefs, values and norms, customs, dress, diet, roles, knowledge and skills, and all the other things that people learn
that make up the 'way of life' of any society"
So when we use the expression 'Italian culture' we know that we are talking about the entire set of believes, knowledge and the whole way of life that
characterise Italian people. Something connected to their country but that is with them wherever they go. If they are born in Italy or within an Italian
group of people they will speak Italian, they will eat traditional Italian food when they are home, they will be probably Catholic etc.
While many concepts inside Browne definition are familiar and easy to identify like language and diet, three of them need a proper explanation for a
better understanding of them.
Values, Norms, Roles
What are 'values'?
The word 'values' is often used in our daily language. When we listen to someone that is talking about her or his values we understand that that person
is talking about something that marks out what characterize her/his own concept of 'what is important,

Sociology: The Study of Culture Essay
Many times I have attempted to comprehend the actions of other people. I always wanted to know why people of different genders, descents, and
colors had certain cultural, societal, and religious beliefs. It became apparent to me that all persons are a direct reflection of their environment. In other
words, all persons unconsciously, and sometimes consciously, reflect and imitate their environment and the things that they see. Every culture has their
own individual stereotypes and belief systems. The reason for this is that people place arbitrary meanings on life's occurrences based upon those of the
individuals which preceded them. Thought patterns of an individual are all dependent upon the teachings of others. We perceive and...show more

They also study the way the members of a group respond to one another and to other groups. The sociological perspective is based on the
assumption that for a given collectively there is a collective reality that can be studied in it's own right. Various cultures develop their own cultural
practices based on the traditions of their predecessors. In these societies, standards of behavior are passed on from one generation to the next.
Because of this, these various cultures all carry and practice unique ideologies. The ideologies are developed by socialization. Socialization is the
complex process by which individuals come to learn and perform behavior expected of them by society. Socialization teaches habits, ideas,
attitudes, and values. This is one of the principle ways by which society preserve themselves. Learning plays an important part in socialization. A
person must acquire a wide range of information and skills to participate in the activities of a family, a play group, a school group, a business, or a
political system. From the family, children learn such basic functions as proper etiquette, hygiene, and association with other peer groups. They also
learn the basic values, beliefs, and goals of the family. For example, they learn what it is to be male or female, what to believe as truth and falsehood,
and what to value in human relations. This process varies with different cultural and ethnic

man's capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations." People learn about culture through interaction rather than through
the memorization of a text. To become fluent in any oneculture you have to experience it and become involved. There are many ways that a culture can
be shared among people without them being fluent in it such as through: food, customs, clothing, language, beliefs, and behaviors. With the increase of

Various societies and ethnic groups recognize different illnesses, symptoms, and causes. Each group develops different treatments and health care
strategies, which can be passed on and applied in different cultures.
Cultures can't always stay the same; therefore, they undergo a process called adaptation. The process of adaptation refers to an organism coping with
the environmental forces and stressors. Animals use biological means of adaptation, but humans are unique in also having a means of cultural
adaptation. As cultural anthropologist study human history the importance of adaptation has been revealed. Humans have formulated ways of coping
with the range of environments they have occupied in time and space. An example of the adaptation is the coping with the spread of industrial
production, which has strongly affected human life. Each economic revolution has social and cultural consequences.
Complete cultural fluency in more than one culture is possible, however it is a long process. A person can become fluent in two languages through
memorization and practice, however the process to become fluent in two cultures in much more intricate. The only way a person can become
culturally fluent is to be exposed and involved in the cultural for a prolonged amount of time. A person must put aside their own culture and be able to
experience what people do, what people know, and the things people make and use, in order

Essay On Cultural Influences On Culture
There are many ways that concept of the 'self' is influenced by culture. The culture of a society gives its people, as a group, unique characteristics with
which to conform including language, religion, government, clothing, art, music, values, beliefs, attitudes and ideals. These are learned behaviors and
there are many ways that they influence how people live, their homes, their lifestyle, their habits, their laws, the number of children their families have,
how they raise those children, and much more. Within each culture people are individuals and each adapts to the culture of their society in his or her
own way. Each individual is unique and has their own preferences within the culture. In addition, each individual may or may not conform to the
cultures ideals and beliefs or they may refuse to accept them. Hamburgers and hot dogs are considered to be foods of the American culture,
however, there are many Americans who don't eat meat. Televisions are standard in the American home, however, individuals have different ideas
about how much and what to watch. Independence Day is considered an American holiday and is a legal holiday in the United States. Each
American celebrates in their own way, they may attend a party or barbeque, they may go to a parade or a baseball game, or they may chose not to
celebrate at all. They may even chose to work. Clothing that is acceptable within the American culture varies greatly by individual preference, social
status, economic status, gender and region. Individual differences within a culture go as far back as infancy. Some infants cry more than others and
some are calm. Parents also chose to respond to their babies in different ways. Most Americans put their babies in a crib at night and let them cry
before responding. Others chose to have their babies closer and to respond immediately when they cry, more like parents in pre–industrialized societies.
Also, many mothers in Western societies breast–feed on demand which is a custom more often seen in pre–industrialized societies. This can lead to
significant differences in child development within the culture. Some studies suggest that babies who are held more are happier, more trusting and
more secure, this

discipline can be influenced by culture. Culture contains values, norms, prejudice, social influence and human activity. Values and beliefs hold high
importance. An example would be religion, in" many cultures religion is of high value"(Kerfoot). Norms set an expectation to what is socially

Culture : A Cultural Perspective Essay
The concept of culture is something that defines many aspects of one's life. From physical objects to different ways of thinking, culture adds
significance to human life and makes groups of people distinct from one another. Culture is essentially a group of people who come together with
similar interests and points of view. According to the Center for Advanced Language Acquisition of the University of Minnesota, "
culture is defined as
the shared patterns of behaviors and interactions, cognitive constructs, and affective understanding that are learned through a process of
socialization." From a more sociological perspective, culture is a way in which people come together in order to fulfill their needs. These shared
patterns and ideas identify the members of a culture group while also distinguishing those of another group." Culture is one of the things that sets the
United States apart from the rest of the world. Not that the rest of the world is not cultural, but the circumstance here is different. Many people of
different cultural backroads come to this country in search of a better life. As a consequence, the United States has become a place where many
cultures merge together like a colossal pot soup.
This is why we have so many options on how to go about doing things. The most common thing that comes to mind is food. There are so many types

The Differences Of Culture And Culture Essay
The Differences of Culture
Culture is part of each of us; its characteristics are defined by a combination of multiple conditions such as language, religion, places, people, lifestyle,
etc. People in different societies have different cultures, sometimes they can be significantly different, but they can also have similarities. We are all
surrounded by people of different backgrounds, religion and culture. This expands our knowledge and by being surrounded of different cultures, it let
us to think with an open mind accepting our differences, but also celebrating our similarities. Some of us might have a greater knowledge in this
subject; some of us have live between a mix of cultures. People that have emigrated from a different country know how different cultures can be. I
believe every one of us at some point have seen the differences of cultures, some might know little about them, but at least everyone can be identified
with their own culture. To know who we are and what our culture represents is important, it is also important to expand our knowledge in cultures
from people that surround us because we are in a diverse world where millions of people live differently and it might surprise us how different but also
how similar we all are.
Culture is powerful; it can shape our perceptions, attributions, judgment, and ideas of our self and of others. It is one of the most important attributes
in our lives. We carry this since a very young age; we look up to our parents, our

The Importance of Culture Essay
What is culture? The definition of culture as explained by the English Anthropologist Edward B. Taylor in his work Primitive Culture: "Culture or
civilization...is that complex whole which includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, customs, and other capabilities acquired by man as a member of
society." (Atafori). In addition, culture is the habits of people and is an important part of any society. Culture ties people of a community together, gives
an individual a unique identity, and serves as the founding principles of one's life.
First, culture unites people together in a society. Further, culture gives common interests to one another in their society. For instance, Deepa Kartha

writes that she chooses, "nature's provision over those orange– and pink– and purple–colored medicines" (Li 144). Therefore, the custom individualizes
her from other people that do not have the same custom. Moreover, the language one person speaks sets them apart from other people of different
cultures. In addition, German–American anthropologist Franz Boas studied Native American languages; Boas contends "that language was a
fundamental aspect of culture" ("Franz Boas"). Because communication is essential to life and community, sharing a common tongue binds people.
Therefore, numerous aspects of culture are the foundation to build a person's identity.
Furthermore, the fundamental of one's life comes from his or her cultural values. For instance, Encyclopedia.com suggests that "symbolic anthropology
looks at how people's mental constructs guide their lives" ("Culture"). Therefore, culture sets values in a person's mind, which leads to how that person
thinks throughout life. Parenting expert Armin Brott points out that children books shape a child's thinking into "mothers are the truer parents and that
fathers play, at best, a secondary role in the home" and youngsters "believe what they hear" (Brott 287). For example, the book Mother Goose and the

Growing up with divorced parents provided me with an opportunity to gain independence I would have not otherwise learned if I had not been
impacted by my parent's divorce. A household with married parents compared to a household with divorced parents is very contrasting. My
parents divorced when I was very young. I lived with my mom and would visit my dad on the weekends. My mom was a stay at home mom so when
my parents divorced she was jobless. We struggled a lot and I gained a lot of responsibilities because she was a single mom with no income other than
child support. I did most of the cleaning and laundry, and woke myself up and got ready for school all by myself. I gained self–determination and
independence being exposed to this lifestyle. I realized the importance of going to school to get an education to be able to get a good job for myself.

Most people have not had a chance to know their country's history especially when they don't live in their home countries. I am fortunate enough to

extended families with the eldest still being the leader. Some families practiced polygamy but this depended on how rich the man was because he had
to pay heavy dowry to the in–laws. The men's major role was to serve in the king's army. They went hunting and took care of the animals. All this
applied to the sons in the family. The mothers were responsible for taking care of

Essay About Culture Clash

  • 1. Essay about Culture Clash "Culture Clash" I am a born Vietnamese, and Chinese American. For more than a decade I have made many friends coming from diverse cultures. I recall one friend back in high school that demonstrated the importance of one's own private culture, and language. From this experience with my friend, Hong, I realized that families who had a strong cultural, and language practice at home had a very stable and functional family. Individuals who embrace their culture, and language broadly tend to pass on the wisdom of a rich culture on to the next generation. Hong's family demonstrated how out of sync, I was with my own language and culture. My family was losing its Vietnamese roots....show more content... As a result the family was in a stable condition. During this time my family had problems. My brother and I would speak English 75% percent of the time, while my mother would speak both languages, my father speaking Vietnamese. At dinner we would socialize about many subjects, and our daily lives. My father would talk in Vietnamese about his work, and I would talk about my day in English. My dad was not fluent in English, so he had a difficult time interpreting, and understanding what I was saying. Points could not be proven effectively, and it made situations extremely frustrating. As a result it flared up conflicts in language interpretation. The feedback we gave to each other was disorganized, and confusing. Our family was not functioning well in terms of communication. Every year in February my culture celebrates a New Year such as the Vietnamese New Year. The Chinese New Year, and the Vietnamese New Year are identical to each other. In the Chinese, and Vietnamese New Year relatives, friends, and families get together, and give out money. My family got used to not celebrating our cultural New Year. Every time the New Year would come around, no one would mention it. The Chinese New Year slowly became like any other day. Hong's family would throw a huge New Year's party. His relatives would drop by to socialize with his family in Chinese. I would see his grandmother, grandfather, parents, and other relatives give out Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 2. Essay on Cultural Globalization Globalisation and global flows of culture have redefined the processes in which we share and connect to ourselves, others, and the world. From its onset, globalisation had both proponents' and critics; some believed that it leads to a rich, hybrid global culture. Others saw it as the west versus the rest, an imprint of Western values and ideologies upon the world's rich and diverse cultures. In exploring global flows ofculture, we can observe these major assumptions about globalisation as well as its changing nature. New, 'reverse' cultural flows have begun to emerge and question these traditional assumptions. The case study of Japan's 'pink globalisation' is one such reverse flow. Globalisation can take on many different shapes and...show more content... Appadurai terms these global flows as 'scapes', in which media, technology and ideology circulate broadly around the globe. The forces behind this new global imagination and its scapes are no longer nation states but global media corporations. Accelerated by the dawn of the internet and an opening up of transnational borders for economic trade in the 1990's, global media corporations have rapidly penetrated overseas markets with products aimed at consumers in what could be seen as a cultural ideology of consumerism. Cultural globalisation is no longer a case of Americanisation, but rather multiple, competing globalisations of global media corporations. Henry Jenkins observed the impact of these global media corporations which he described as 'corporate convergence.' In addition, we also see a 'grassroots convergence,' in which fans armed with new technologies capable of crossing borders (such as the internet) prescribe to new forms of popular culture. Jenkins observed this convergence coupling as 'pop cosmopolitanism.' This notion of pop cosmopolitanism explains the rise in popularity of a new, reverse flow, in which Japanese popular culture products are being disseminated across the globe. To demonstrate the active way in which media is appropriated by people Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 3. Definition of Culture Essay With a diverse population existing in the United States today, our country is a melting pot of different cultures, each one unique in its own respect. Culture, distinguishing one societal group from another, includes beliefs, behaviors, language, traditions, art, fashion styles, food, religion, politics, and economic systems. Through lifelong and ever changing processes of learning, creativity, and sharing, culture shapes our patterns of behavior and thinking. A culture?s significance is so profound that it touches almost every aspect of who and what we are. ?Culture becomes the lens through which we perceive and evaluate what is going on around us? (Henslin, 1993). Trying to define the complex term of culture with varying...show more content... Her accent and the non–visible facial expressions create a barrier for comprehending the communication. Later, as the service for the woman progresses, her beliefs, values, and norms of her culture are dispelled. For example, in order for the woman to show her face to another male in public, she must first request permission from her husband to unveil. During further discussion, it becomes even more apparent, that this Iranian woman is subservient and possesses a lower level of status than that of Iranian males. All of these characteristics are indicative of this woman?s culture. As conveyed in the above description, the characteristics represent the unique symbols of one?s culture. Symbols, in representative form of communication, art, expressions, materials, and so on, allow a cultural group to develop complex thoughts and to exchange those thoughts with each other. Through the exchanging of symbols, one?s cultural ideas, beliefs, and values, are passed on from one generation to the next. People are not born with culture; they have to learn it. Throughout the development of the entire life span, culture is learned from the society in which we live. Furthermore, in the diverse population of the United States, ethnic groups or societies will have to interact with other groups outside the realm of their individual self. In order to do so, it is necessary for the societies to exchange languages, ideas, or even, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Mass Media And Culture Essay It is interesting that Raymond Williams creates a division between high class culture and lower class culture, suggesting that culture is ordinary, shared and common. If this is the case why does he emphasise a division in light of this concept? And if we all share a common culture can there be a division? It is difficult to understand the term culture. What is culture? Is it a utopian dream, is it a shared group of interests that bring a community together, or is it just simply a way of life? There are so many questions surrounding culture and its meaning. Raymond Williams described culture as "maps of meaning through which the world is made intelligible", whether we agree with this definition or not, he was right in saying that the...show more content... But before I discuss Internet culture it is imperative that I decipher the essence of mass culture and mass media. To understand the term "mass", it is important to study Gustave Lebon. Although there have been many more recent theorists that have discussed the term "mass"; including Karl Max, John Stuart Mills and Mathew Arnold, Lebon's theories on "mass" have pervaded disputes on the subject ever since. A quote specifically that is questioned today is his warning that "the age we are about to enter will in truth be the era of crowds" ([1895] 1916, p. 3), at a time when working class parties were more present and when western societies were dealing with the growth of industrialisation and mass migration to popular cities. His book "La psychologie des foules" was cited for its treatise to crowds, however is much more about the advent of mass society in physiological terms. He discusses "contagion, loss of individuality, and regression to a more primitive mental state were his favourite terms". The reason for the book being described as a treatise for the mass is his connotation of crowd behaviour within a larger mass. For example Lebon quotes, "thousands of isolated individuals may acquire at certain moments, and under the influence of certain violent emotions – such, for example, as a great national event – the characteristics of a psychological crowd". However, the mere coming together of a crowd is not sufficient enough to cause the disappearance of the conscious Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Reflection On Culture We as people define the word culture as "the integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generation" according to Merriam Dictionary. Culture surrounds and affects us in every way. The way we think, speak and act is due to culture. When we as individuals venture off into different geographic areas we must be willing to partake in their culture because if we don't it is viewed as insulting. For example, In China when greeting someone you are required to bow your head because it's a sign of respect towards the other person. If you do not bow your head its seen as a sign of disrespect and you are in a sense socially exiled. Culture is also...show more content... At school, kids made fun of my African culture, even the very food that I ate. My mom would make Jollof rice for my lunch and I was ashamed to eat it even though it was a dish I loved. The children in the class would refer to me as African booty scratcher, the lion chaser, and midnight. I started to find myself in a state of depression. The children did not accept my culture neither were they willing too! I ate lunch alone almost every day and had zero friends. It wasn't until high school that I started making friends. The only reason I made friends was because I learned how to adapt to their culture and way of life. I started to dress like American children, and talk like them also. When I was younger, boys in high school loved to wear the Jordan and Nike brands. As a teenager, I applied for a job and saved my money and bought those brands not to mentioned that I saved some of my hardworking money as well. One thing that I noticed after I started wearing these brands was acceptance into their culture. No longer was I an outsider, but I had now become part of this group. Looking back at my past I've realized that everyone is looking for acceptance. Although many people say to be your own person, it is hard to be your own person in a society with a culture foreign to yours. Culture is a custom associated with regions, places and even neighborhoods. If you cannot learn to adapt to a certain Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Culture, Culture And Culture Essay Culture Many times we hear concepts like 'Oriental culture', 'Italian culture' or 'Gothic Culture'. So we can understand and verify that it is an important concept related to the idea of the society where we live in. Culture, in Sociology, is a concept developed during XVIII and XIX centuries that has had various definitions. One exhaustive definition is in Browne (2015, p. 31): "Culture refers to the language, beliefs, values and norms, customs, dress, diet, roles, knowledge and skills, and all the other things that people learn that make up the 'way of life' of any society" So when we use the expression 'Italian culture' we know that we are talking about the entire set of believes, knowledge and the whole way of life that characterise Italian people. Something connected to their country but that is with them wherever they go. If they are born in Italy or within an Italian group of people they will speak Italian, they will eat traditional Italian food when they are home, they will be probably Catholic etc. While many concepts inside Browne definition are familiar and easy to identify like language and diet, three of them need a proper explanation for a better understanding of them. Values, Norms, Roles What are 'values'? The word 'values' is often used in our daily language. When we listen to someone that is talking about her or his values we understand that that person is talking about something that marks out what characterize her/his own concept of 'what is important, Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Sociology: The Study of Culture Essay Many times I have attempted to comprehend the actions of other people. I always wanted to know why people of different genders, descents, and colors had certain cultural, societal, and religious beliefs. It became apparent to me that all persons are a direct reflection of their environment. In other words, all persons unconsciously, and sometimes consciously, reflect and imitate their environment and the things that they see. Every culture has their own individual stereotypes and belief systems. The reason for this is that people place arbitrary meanings on life's occurrences based upon those of the individuals which preceded them. Thought patterns of an individual are all dependent upon the teachings of others. We perceive and...show more content... They also study the way the members of a group respond to one another and to other groups. The sociological perspective is based on the assumption that for a given collectively there is a collective reality that can be studied in it's own right. Various cultures develop their own cultural practices based on the traditions of their predecessors. In these societies, standards of behavior are passed on from one generation to the next. Because of this, these various cultures all carry and practice unique ideologies. The ideologies are developed by socialization. Socialization is the complex process by which individuals come to learn and perform behavior expected of them by society. Socialization teaches habits, ideas, attitudes, and values. This is one of the principle ways by which society preserve themselves. Learning plays an important part in socialization. A person must acquire a wide range of information and skills to participate in the activities of a family, a play group, a school group, a business, or a political system. From the family, children learn such basic functions as proper etiquette, hygiene, and association with other peer groups. They also learn the basic values, beliefs, and goals of the family. For example, they learn what it is to be male or female, what to believe as truth and falsehood, and what to value in human relations. This process varies with different cultural and ethnic Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 8. Essay about Understanding Culture Culture, is defined by Merriam–Webster's Online Dictionary, as "the integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon man's capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations." People learn about culture through interaction rather than through the memorization of a text. To become fluent in any oneculture you have to experience it and become involved. There are many ways that a culture can be shared among people without them being fluent in it such as through: food, customs, clothing, language, beliefs, and behaviors. With the increase of technology and new discoveries about the world developing daily it makes it impossible for cultures to remain stagnant; therefore, they must learn ...show more content... Various societies and ethnic groups recognize different illnesses, symptoms, and causes. Each group develops different treatments and health care strategies, which can be passed on and applied in different cultures. Cultures can't always stay the same; therefore, they undergo a process called adaptation. The process of adaptation refers to an organism coping with the environmental forces and stressors. Animals use biological means of adaptation, but humans are unique in also having a means of cultural adaptation. As cultural anthropologist study human history the importance of adaptation has been revealed. Humans have formulated ways of coping with the range of environments they have occupied in time and space. An example of the adaptation is the coping with the spread of industrial production, which has strongly affected human life. Each economic revolution has social and cultural consequences. • 9. Essay On Cultural Influences On Culture There are many ways that concept of the 'self' is influenced by culture. The culture of a society gives its people, as a group, unique characteristics with which to conform including language, religion, government, clothing, art, music, values, beliefs, attitudes and ideals. These are learned behaviors and there are many ways that they influence how people live, their homes, their lifestyle, their habits, their laws, the number of children their families have, how they raise those children, and much more. Within each culture people are individuals and each adapts to the culture of their society in his or her own way. Each individual is unique and has their own preferences within the culture. In addition, each individual may or may not conform to the cultures ideals and beliefs or they may refuse to accept them. Hamburgers and hot dogs are considered to be foods of the American culture, however, there are many Americans who don't eat meat. Televisions are standard in the American home, however, individuals have different ideas about how much and what to watch. Independence Day is considered an American holiday and is a legal holiday in the United States. Each American celebrates in their own way, they may attend a party or barbeque, they may go to a parade or a baseball game, or they may chose not to celebrate at all. They may even chose to work. Clothing that is acceptable within the American culture varies greatly by individual preference, social status, economic status, gender and region. Individual differences within a culture go as far back as infancy. Some infants cry more than others and some are calm. Parents also chose to respond to their babies in different ways. Most Americans put their babies in a crib at night and let them cry before responding. Others chose to have their babies closer and to respond immediately when they cry, more like parents in pre–industrialized societies. Also, many mothers in Western societies breast–feed on demand which is a custom more often seen in pre–industrialized societies. This can lead to significant differences in child development within the culture. Some studies suggest that babies who are held more are happier, more trusting and more secure, this Get more content on HelpWriting.net
