What is social justice? From my perspective, social justice is the enlightened human concern for people of all backgrounds. It is the respect and
endearment for people no matter their race, gender, sexuality, religion, or socioeconomic class. Social justice has, in a way, affected my life experience.
Social justice hasn't directly impacted my life experience, but I have learned about many cases of injustice throughout my years. Learning about these
events and social justice makes me think about current events in a different light. I know see how an event might affect not only myself, but all types

The Lost Boys, for example, had no choice but to run away and seek refuge to avoid their deaths. The Lost Boys struggled for months at a time
until the United States was able to accept them into the country. This community in Saint Cloud is just like the Lost Boys of South Sudan. They
may seem intimidating to locals because of their lack of knowledge of those cultures, but they are seeking refuge to our country for a reason. They
are coming here for safety and to begin a new life in a great country. They are here to be functioning members of a new society and to share their
culture with ours. They are not here to hurt us, nor are they here to steal our jobs or money. They are here to be Americans that don't have to
worry about their lives being in jeopardy every day of the week. They are here to be one of us. Without learning about social justice, I wouldn't

As an undergraduate student, I never imagined becoming a social worker. At that time, I did not have a complete understanding of all the aspects
social work encompassed. I was also unaware of the various pathways social work had. Now, to my understanding, social workers are aiming for social

My respondents vary across the boundaries of race and social class. All but one respondent, are Indian. The other is identifies as a White American.

Despite national borders, cultural differences, and various political ideologies, social injustice occurs everywhere. The readings from class
demonstrate the universality of social injustice whether it be discrimination of race, gender, sexuality, religion, or ethnicity. In three of the readings,
"A Lesson before Dying," by Earnest J. Gaines, Malala Yousafzai's speech to the United Nations, and "The Little Alligator" by Martin Espada, we can
analyze how people are mistreated and their reactions to the mistreatments. In all three pieces of literature, we can see a commonality in those who are
oppressed, how they were treated, and how they responded with their voices. One of the most common themes I observed when reading the three texts
from 20th century American, contemporary Middle Eastern, and late 20th century Hispanic literature, is that social injustice appears to be directed to

As a country in the past couple years we have had growing occurrences of social injustices. Racism seemed to be a major component behind many of
these instances. This really came to light in the events that took place in Ferguson, Missouri and yet again resurfacing most recently in North

I grew up in a time of great social strife. My wife and I were born before World War II, long before the civil rights movement, yet I was raised in a
household where racism did not exist. My mother, an activist far ahead of her time, stressed upon me the importance of diversity and equality. She
often welcomed into our home people from all different walks of life. As a child, I experienced and learned diversity from my own dinner table. This
way of thinking carried with me throughout my life, from my travels in Africa and Southeast Asia, my career as an officer in theUnited States military,
and my experience as a university
