Experience
Bernie Sanders for President 2016, Field Organizer
California
• Independently organized congressional District 19 in San Jose, California’s third
largest city.
• Orchestrated a successful and inclusive primary campaign by working with a
diverse base of Vietnamese, Indian, Caucasian and Latino constituencies.
Although we lacked an office and had limited resources we succeeded by focusing
on volunteer outreach and education and by meeting or exceeding our daily call
goal of 200 volunteer recruitment calls.
• Trained volunteers with no prior experience or political knowledge to assume the
traditional responsibilities of paid staff. Ten volunteers ran their own campaign
hubs; open 12 hours daily in cafés around the city. These volunteers recruited
others who completed over 8,300 volunteer recruitment calls, knocked on over
15,000 doors and made 109,000 direct voter contact (DVC) calls over 6 weeks.
• Created a volunteer-led framework, specifically for the GOTV period of June
3rd – 7th, over which 120 volunteers knocked on 8,000 doors
• Practiced creative methods to activate volunteer groups and ensure internal
cohesiveness over a large geographic area, such as conference calls, out-of-
state volunteer networks, and Google hangouts
• Emboldened volunteers to continue to organize their communities after the
primary season ends.
• Introduced Bernie Sanders on May 18th 2016 at the Santa Clara County
Fairgrounds for his San Jose Rally. In my speech, I encouraged attendees to
volunteer and clarified the Santa Clara County voting rules.
Hawai‘i
• Began organizing the Students for Bernie Sanders group at the University of Hawai’i
Manoa on August 23rd
2015. Although not a student, I was one of the founders of the
campus group and lead twice weekly voter registration drives as well as organized 3
large scale campus rallies from September 2015 to March of 2016.
• Lead the only office on the Big Island of Hawai’i and succeeded in capturing 77% of
the vote for Bernie Sanders.
• Personally engaged with community leaders to identify intersectional interests
between the campaign and the local community. Through this engagement, leaders
provided endorsements, quotes, and pictures to use in social media and advertising
campaigns.
• Trained volunteers to make direct voter contact calls using LiveVox and Hubdialer.
My office made the most calls in the state with the exception of the fully staffed
headquarters in the state capitol. These calls emphasized correcting widespread
misinformation concerning party registration.
• Assigned volunteers to election day caucus locations in order to keep locations from
closing early and to oversee the ballot counting process. These efforts prevented at
least one instance of election fraud.
