2009- EXECUTIVE MEDICAL DIRECTOR FOR PERIOPERATIVE SERVICES,
Vanderbilt University Hospital (VUH), Nashville, TN: Responsible for Operating Room Medical
Leadership, in collaboration with Perioperative Services Nursing and Administrative Leaders, for over
60 Operating and Procedural Rooms at VUH and 2 hospital-owned ambulatory surgery centers. Proven
expertise in block scheduling, capacity planning, construction of new procedural suites, capital
equipment prioritization, process improvement, and inter-specialty collaboration and diplomacy. Active
participant in all TJC and CMS surveys and inspections in this and previous roles.
2009- VICE CHAIRMAN FOR CLINICAL AFFAIRS AND PROFESSOR, DEPARTMENT
OF ANESTHESIOLOGY, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Responsible for
operational oversight, manpower planning, budgeting ($80M/year), space and capital planning,
recruiting, credentialing and quality management for department comprised of 100 physician
anesthesiologists, 120 CRNAs, and 80 residents and fellows, providing care in 90 anesthetizing
locations, including 4 ambulatory centers and 2 hospitals. Other roles included on-going strategic and
tactical steering of informatics development priorities for the Vanderbilt Perioperative Information
Management System (VPIMS), which provides operational, documentation, billing, compliance, and
real-time decision support in the preoperative, procedural, and postoperative areas as well as the
Department of Anesthesiology.
2001-2009 ASSOCIATE CHIEF OF STAFF/SENIOR ASSOCIATE CHIEF OF STAFF,
University of North Carolina Hospitals, Chapel Hill, NC: Oversight of Quality and Accreditation
Activities and Integration of OPPE and FPPE into the Medical Staff Reappointment Process. Chair of
the Credentials Committee. Participated in all TJC and CMS surveys and inspections.
1993-1994 SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOR MEDICAL AFFAIRS, Lutheran General Hospital, Park
Ridge, IL: Responsible for Quality, all Medical Staff Departments, and the Medical Staff Office.
Competencies acquired included statistical process control, continuous quality improvement, and quality
management techniques based on the works of W. Edwards Deming.

MD: Took over and co-led a turn-around of a department at a 300-bed hospital.
1982- ACADEMIC ANESTHESIOLOGY CAREER. 33 years of experience in clinical care,
administration, education, and operational leadership with an established reputation for excellence. Clinical
skill areas: anesthesia for liver transplantation, anesthesia for vascular surgery, perioperative medicine and
enhanced recovery after surgery protocols, transesophageal echocardiography. Clinical and operations
management publications, 15 years of participation on committees of the American Society of
Anesthesiologists. Chair of the Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC: oversees all abstract presentation
sessions at the annual meeting) and member of the Annual Meeting Oversight Committee Executive for a 3-
year term beginning October 2015.
