Performance Review
Employee: Ryans, Donald
Job Title: Inventory Manager
Review period start: 12/1/12
Review period end: 11/11/13
Reviewer: William Abel
Responsibilities:
This is an annual performance review of Donald Ryans. Donald Ryans serves as Inventory
Manger of Acme Furniture and has served our company for 10 years now. He works closely with
his subordinates. On larger estate sales, Donald supervises up to six employees. He is responsible
for the securing of inventory and transportation for our two stores. He is also responsible for the
arrangement of inventory on the showroom floor and is expected to serve as a customer service
representative for our company.
Competencies:
Communications
Donald is able to express himself clearly and with the insight needed to excel at his position as
inventory manager. His calm nature and reassuring tone allow him to settle any high stress
encounter. His listening and written communication skills meet expectations. He at times can be
detached with his fellow employees. He expects them to achieve directives without having to
explain the reason for his directive. Donald needs to focus on being consistent in his inter office
communications and strive to provide paperwork.
Managing People
Donald is an assertive manager. He is clear about what is expected of his team and provides them
the resources to achieve their goals. He works hard to property train his subordinates and
provides feedback in a positive manner. He can be overbearing at times and drives his team hard
when deadlines approach. At times he appears to become overwhelmed and in those instances
his judgment is compromised. In these instances his team loses focus and has resulted in the loss
of revenue.
Leadership
Donald leads by example. He is able to lead others through a challenging day with his drive and
determination. His confidence and knowledge of business operations creates the example for
others to follow. His strong work ethic at times can be overwhelming for his subordinates.
Others may find his extraordinary effort daunting, causing them to be discouraged at times.
Teamwork
Donald is an absolute team player. His mastery of day to day operations and time management
provides our company with a foundation of solid teamwork. His sole objective is to provide our
company the effort necessary for our team to be successful. He takes on the least desirable tasks
and completes them with little objection. His willingness to tackle the difficult tasks inspires
others to provide a greater effort. His quiet leadership however does not necessarily provide
spirit or enthusiasm. The feedback he provides supplements the deficiency left by his lack of
charisma. His clear directives and openness to the feedback from other employees makes him a
valuable commodity.
Summary:
Donald Ryans is an invaluable employee. He has proven his worth over the past decade and is an
integral part of our success.
Donald provides our customers the information and assistance that is expected of a tenured
employee. On a number of occasions in the past year I have observed his interactions with
difficult customers. He navigated these discussions with ease and settled the issues that brought
them forth. On one specific occasion Donald settled an irate customer. His calm nature and
understanding of the confusion was able to save a large sale.
His leadership strengths have allowed management to focus on the upcoming expansion of Acme
Furniture. He has proven himself a team player that puts the success of our company before
pride. On one occasion in March, he argued his point about a difficult management decision. The
final decision was contrary to his advice. He carried out the final directive as if he was the one
who suggested it. He fired the employee who was also his friend. The difficult situation and how
he carried it, is the reason he has gained the respect of his colleagues.
His management skills are one reason for my recommendation to assume a greater responsibility.
The strengths he has shown most recently have placed him in position to become the general
manager of the Clark Road location. His communication skills and work ethic has proven he is
up to the challenge. Senior management here at Acme Furniture looks for a continued growth of
his management skills.
We will provide Donald with the tools and resources he needs to improve. With proper focus and
determination, we believe Donald can overcome his weaknesses and serve as strong General
Manager.
