Letter to Derby Magistrates - Will Spowage

Dear sir,
I am writing to you because finishing a 22-month driving ban my license
remains revoked, DVLA. Attached is a copy of their latest correspondence. You should already be
aware than on returning home from custody I immediately surrendered my driving license on the
request of the DVLA. This is because my mental health team thought at the time that it was
appropriate to make them aware of a so-called 'drink problem'.
In my opinion this was something that I believe to be wrong because as you may agree many people
at my age (25 at the time) drink alcohol, and it was sheer coincidence that I was convicted whilst a
drink problem was being documented.
27 years old now, and hopefully wiser, I find it both discriminatory and upsetting the fact I have to
fulfil another 12 months on my 'driving ban'.
I disclosed to the doctor that I had a recent slip up with cannabis and cocaine, something I truly
regret. He has of course disclosed this to the DVLA.
You may judge by the volume of my correspondence that I am eager to get back on the road again.
Remaining drug free for 12 months has the best incentive, a driving license (and vice-versa).
I would like to ask you to please do your best to co-operate with me regarding ensuring that I
remain drug free through out these 12 months. If there is any way you could arrange frequent drug
tests, a drug/alcohol worker and the means to document my good progress that would be great.
My medical team will also receive a copy of the DLVA's response and I'd also arrange with them to
co-operate with progress reports.
There will be more correspondence from myself over the course of this next year.
I am reminded of the time that I gave up on the chance to complete a drink-driving awareness
course which would have got me a third off my conviction (which in essence has been made
additional).
I am sharing with you my initial reaction to the letter from the DVLA, which is one of
understanding. Though I would like to get my license back as soon as possible I recognize the
positive elements of both incentives.
Thank you for your time. I trust you understand my frustration at the outcome of the DVLA's
ruling. If there is any way you could suggest I could speed things up then I wait with grateful
patience. Thank you again,
Yours Faithfully,
William A G Spowage
