and his determination to fight. Washington was voted general and commander–in–chief of the Continental Army on June 15, 1775. The delegates who

failed to follow orders. Washington always came up with plans that kept his army one step ahead of the enemy. After leading many tough battles during

were left in the care of his mother. At the age of twenty, George, who had no experience or training as a soldier, applied to the governor for a
commission in the militia. In February, 1753 he was commissioned as a major and put in charge of training militia in southern Virginia. Washington
immediately began reading books on tactics and military affairs. In October, 1753 Washington learned that Robert Dinwiddie, the acting governor of
Virginia, planned to send a message to the French military commander in the Ohio River Valley. Dinwiddie intended to warn the French that they must
withdraw their troops from the region. The French wanted the Ohio River Valley for fur trading, but the British wanted it for farming. Washington
volunteered to carry the message and Dinwiddie gave him the task. In November, Washington set out into the dangerous wilderness. With him went
Christopher Gist, a frontier guide, an interpreter and four frontiersmen.

As well as creating the Farmers' Institute, Carver also helped the farmers of Alabama and the southern states a great deal. An insect called the boll
weevil became an enormous threat to the cotton fields of southern United States. Carver recommended to these farmers that they should substitute their
cotton crops with sweet potatoes and, the more successful recommendation, peanuts. This switch would provide farmers another source of income
and would also help to prevent the spread of the insect. The one problem with this solution was that no one knew what to do with all the peanut
crops. Carver was quoted as saying: "we can learn to synthesize materials for every human need from the things that grow." So that is what he did. In
total, Carver was able to create close to three hundred different products from the peanut plant. These wide variety of products include dyes, ink,
insulation, cosmetics, stock feed, medicines, glue, soap, and peanut milk. Although most of his products never became commercially sold, Carver
became widely known as the "Peanut Man". He also created nearly one hundred uses for the sweet potato crops.

Washington took away that fear when he launched the attack on Hessian troops. He followed up this victory by a win at Princeton. Next, he was
forced to fight a battle that he knew he would lose. The British navy took over Philadelphia at the battle of Brandywine Creek. Washington's militia
was strengthened in October, when General Gates won at Saratoga, New York. In the spring of 1778, good news arrived when the French decided to
send money, troops, and a fleet to help the colonies. When the British heard the news they decided to consolidate their position to New York and New
Jersey. In the time period between 1778 and 1781 Washington kept the British army concealed to New York City. At the time he faced a variety of
disappointments by losing the battles of Brooklyn Heights, Kip's Bay, Harlem Heights, and White Plains.
The greatest event of Washington's military career came on October 19, 1781 when he defeated Cornwall is at Yorktown. Cornwall is surrendered his
entire army of more than 7,000 men. The fighting was finally over, although it would still take two years to form a formal peace treaty.
Washington in his early fifties resumed life as a planter confident that his days of public service were over. A few years had past and the Congress has
a large inability to solve national problems. This was partly due to the lack of authority under the Articles of Confederation. This worried Washington
