Buddhism is considered the world's fourth largest religion, but is it really? Although a large bulk of society rules Buddhism as a religion, its basic
structure and teachings proves that it does not fit in the religious category. Many people argue that it is a religion, mainly because of the unique belief
in the afterlife and various realms of existence within Buddhism. However, there is no god in Buddhism, as anyone who follows the first Buddha's
teachings may become a Buddha themselves. It is the only "religion" that has no supreme spiritual being. It is instead a quest for enlightenment, for
supreme wisdom and intelligence, and to reach Nirvana as a result. It is a quest of self discovery that bypasses the concept of faith. Buddhism cannot
be a religion if it does not meet the criteria to be one.
Religion is defined as the belief in and worship of a superhuman controlling power, especially a personal God or gods. Buddhism doesn't have that.
Instead they have the Buddha, which is an enlightened being. The first Buddha was man named Siddhartha Gautama, the prince of the Sakya clan. Key
word; man. Gautama was not some super–immortal being that ruled in the sky requiring rituals and faith. He also had no requirements to even follow

Behind the main temple was another small courtyard was two smaller buildings for worship to the left and the right of the courtyard. Another
large building was to the back which looked fairly newly built. It seemed to be a place of serving food that contained no meat but some sort of
meat substitute that was not artificially made from what the servers were telling me. Then to the right of that building was a small warehouse that
looked to house desks and whiteboards for the weekly Vietnamese classes that are being held there. Outside of the warehouse was a basketball goal
for the students that would come for Sunday school, and a small parking lot for more visitors. As I took off my shoes before entering the main
temple before the first worship session began, I began to feel a sense of peace within myself as well those that were attending the worship session.

Since I arrived early, I took a walk around the temple and its ground. The smell of flowers filled the air from the incense they were burning. Incense
sticks are burned to release the good smell from the lotus flower to offer the gods and pay respect to the Buddha along with clearing the sky.
Buddha statues and lotus flowers were around the entire temple and land. The lotus flower represents purity, spiritual awakening, and faithfulness
to the Buddhists. Before entering any part of the holy buildings, you must take your shoes off because shoes have a lot of filth on them, they do

What I Learned About Buddhism Essay
One of the reason I took this class is to learn more about religions and their origins but I was specifically interested in Buddhism so I was excited that
it was a religion that the class was going to cover. I had little prior knowledge of Buddhism but I didn't know the origin, important figures and important
teachings but I learned that what I thought was inaccurate. This class deepened my interest of Buddhism more because I learned what it really is about
and their teaching while also correcting the ideas I had of Buddhism that were wrong. One of the ideas I was wrong about Buddhism is that I
thought that they worshipped a deity which was Buddha and that Buddhists pray to him just like Catholics pray to God. In the lectures, I learned

I had a very open mind, so when I tried to follow the Catholic religion, I didn't see any results that fulfilled my spiritual life. Therefore, when I started
learning about Buddhism and started to practice it, I seen that it gave me better results and I felt better in my spiritual life.

A: "I have followed this religion for six years.
Q: How has this religion affected you in the modern day lifestyle?
A: This religion affects me in a very good way. People believe that a religion gives you rules to live by; however, Buddhism is not like that. In
Buddhism, sin and guilty feelings for doing bad things does not exist. Therefore, your lifestyle doesn't change if you don't want it to change, but it
makes you more conscious about what you are doing. In my personal life, I feel that I am the same whether I do something or not, it's not because of
the religion, not because somebody is going to punish me, but because I really want to do it.
Q: What conflicts do you face from people that do not follow this religion?
A: I have found no conflicts because as I said before, I was not convinced about the Catholic religion so it was very easy for me to change religions.
Nobody gave me problems about changing religions because I was 29 years old; therefore I was mature enough to make my own decisions. I had no
conflicts with society or anyone else.
