Recent EventsA Note from the Editor-in-Chief
Greetings Colleagues,
I hope that our update finds you well. This has been a fruitful
time for the Journal. Former State Department Legal Adviser
John Bellinger recently delivered a career talk and a
symposium keynote address — each to a packed room. We
continue to publish thoughtful scholarship on cutting-edge
issues ranging from cyber security to intellectual property to
fracking. Our staff of nearly one hundred never ceases to
amaze, with its employment at top international law firms and
government agencies such as USAID and the Department of
Justice. Thanks for trailblazing, and keep in touch!
Regards,
Jonathan E. Amgott

Spotlight on Our Recent Publications
The Journal is proud of the timeliness and scholarly caliber of its
recent publications. Among our latest articles, Prof. Susan D.
Franck’s piece on investor-state dispute resolution debunks the
myth that state development status biases outcomes. Her draft
informed this Wall Street Journal article on the challenges facing
Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiations.
Prof. Tom Ginsburg & doctoral candidate Dawood I. Ahmed at
the University of Chicago coded national constitutions since 1789
to trace the origin and adoption of Islamic supremacy clauses,
with implications for liberal democracy and the role of religion in
the public square.
VJIL Digest, our online-exclusive publication tailored to rapid-
response matters, recently published Prof. Michael N. Schmitt’s
drone law reply to UN Special Rapporteur Ben Emmerson.
On the commercial side, Andrew Hartlage, a Washington, DC-
based practitioner, weighed in on the European Commission’s
proposed European Union Financial Transactions Tax.
Keynote addresses published by World Bank Group officials have
focused on financial regulation and global development.
