Editor's Notes (Introduce yourself)
In the next 25 minutes or so am going to take you through who WALTHAM are and how we fit with the rest of the Mars Petcare business, how we do things, some of our key outputs in the last 50 years and what we are currently researching. So what is WALTHAM?
WALTHAM is the global fundamental science centre providing scientific support, credibility and knowledge to Mars Petcare. Essentially this means that WALTHAM is the fundamental science behind the Mars petcare brands.
It is important to note that WALTHAM is a global centre. Although we are based in the UK we work with all the global markets to support Mars petcare.
In terms of how we do our research: we conduct high quality innovative science in a caring way. Caring science means that our pets benefit from the studies and their needs come first. A great example of caring science is saliva collection where we have trained cats to lick cotton buds which can then be centrifuged to harvest the saliva for oral care lab studies. Using positive reinforcement (clicker training) the cat benefits from feedback that they are doing a good job. Let’s see what research is still going on today..... The nutrition and metabolism programme is core to what Waltham stands for. Although it may appear that we know everything there is to know about nutrition after many years of research, we continue to refine our nutrient specifications and continue to look at the specific needs of puppies and kittens when compared to adults.
The human field of oral care is well researched to the extent that they pretty much know every bacterium involved and have well defined methods of combating both periodontal disease and caries. The picture in cats and dogs is much more fuzzy as no one has really taken much interest...until Waltham started to look into this. We started a few years ago to look at the bacteria involved in periodontal disease in dogs and cats as we think it will help us to identify novel ways of fighting the problem. We know mechanical removal of plaque via abrasion is a good way of helping to control plaque build up but introducing active ingredients into the products will provide a step change...especially if they are targeted at the problematic bacteria themselves. Our oral care research continues to look at the bacteria involved and we have recently published on this area. The research in this area today is very much around improving our understanding of how the digestive system of the dog works and how the nutrients from various raw materials are utilised. We are developing ways of non-invasively exploring the digestive system of dogs, providing us with valuable information when it comes to selecting the ideal raw materials for our products when considering digestibility (or the animal’s ability to use the nutrients).
So we’ve seen how WALTHAM are currently researching how we can make a better world for pets through nutrition. We also have a research programme aimed at understanding the relationship between pets and people which is very important to Mars to help create a better world for pets and their owners. Waltham aims to maintain leadership in this area through high quality peer-reviewed research in collaboration with highly credible external partners. Recently we have published on the benefits of dog ownership for pregnant women. The three key areas currently being researched are: impact of pets on child health, impact of pets on elderly and pets in the wider community. Cats are in general more fussy than dogs so the feeding performance programme focusses on cats. They have a much better sense of smell than us and they use this to assess the aroma of the food as they approach. We are trying to understand which aromas and smells are attractive to cats-this knowledge will then be used to improve the palatability of our products.
