men’s basketball history. The Buffs completed an impressive season under Brown in his
rookie campaign in Canyon. While returning just three student-athletes who saw play-
ing time the year prior and picked last in the conference preseason poll, WT finished the
season with a 17-12 overall record (12-4 at home) and 7-7 mark in Lone Star Confer-
ence play. They made the LSC Tournament as the fifth seed and fell in the quarterfinals
to eventual tournament champion Texas A&M-Commerce. Brown is currently 24-15
overall during his time in Canyon.

LSC PRESEASON MEDIA DAY (OCT. 28)
Tarleton State earned top billing according to the 2015-16 Lone Star Conference men’s
basketball preseason poll announced by the league’s offices on October 28th. TSU
claimed the top spot with 19 first-place votes and 173 points after winning the LSC
Championship last season with a 12-2 league mark. Midwestern State finished second
with 151 points including the remaining three first-place votes. Angelo State was third
with 120 points, followed by defending tournament champions Texas A&M-Commerce
in fourth (109). West Texas A&M was picked fifth with 84 points with Cameron sixth (72),
Texas A&M- Kingsville (55), and Eastern New Mexico (28) rounding out the poll.
MSU’s Bretson McNeal was tabbed Preseason Player of the Year. The LSC has eight
teams set for this season and the league race should be as competitive as ever. The
season begins November 13 with LSC teams playing a double round robin league
schedule, in which each team plays a home and away contest against each of the
other teams to determine the LSC champion. The LSC champion will be the regular
season winner determined by league games, while the postseason tournament winner
is designated as LSC Tournament Champion and earns the conference’s automatic
qualification. The top eight teams in the final conference standings qualify for the post-
season tournament set for March 2-5 in Allen, Texas.

The #12 Pioneers of Wayland Baptist enter the weekend with an
overall record of 8-1 with a perfect 2-0 mark in Sooner Athletic Con-
ference play as they have topped John Brown (78-76) and Bacone
(114-69) on the road to open up SAC play. The Pioneers are led by
first year head coach Ty Harrelson who comes to Plainview following
a professional playing/coaching career overseas after a two-year
playing career at WBU. Wayland is led offensively by Robert Waters
who has shot 73-of-166 (.440) from the floor this season including
43-of-102 (.422) from deep and 34-of-42 (.810) from the free throw
line to average a team leading 24.8 points per game followed by
Maurice Redmond (15.9), Jordan Tolbert (11.7), Jordan Johnson
(11.2) and Marshall Nelson. The Pioneers are shooting 48.4% from
the floor this season including 35.7% from deep and 69.3% from the
charity stripe while averaging 48.9 rebounds per contest (+10.2
margin) and scoring an impressive 100.7 per game while allowing
78.4 per contest.
THE SERIES vs. WBU
The Buffs are 21-2 all-time against the Pioneers with WBU claiming
the last meeting between the two teams, 99-91 back on November
18th of last season in Plainview. Wayland is 0-14 all-time in Canyon.
The last meeting saw then eniors Antjuan Ball, Miles Gatewood, and
Tez Dumars each recorded career-highs in points as the West Texas
A&M men’s basketball team fell to 0-3 to begin the season with a
99-91 loss on Nov. 18, 2014 at the Hutchinson Center in Plainview. The
Buffs still ended the contest shooting 44.6% from the field (29-for-65)
compared to 62.5% from the Pioneers (30-for-48). WT would be out-
rebounded in the contest 39-33, including a 29-18 disadvantage on
the defensive end.
AROUND THE LSC
Entering the week, the LSC men have a 43-19 overall record so far
this season. In the NCAA South Central Region, the men’s teams
are currently 9-9 combined versus Heartland Conference teams
and 12-8 against the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Tarleton
State’s EJ Reed picked up the league’s Offensive Player of the
Week award for the second time this season as he leads the LSC
in scoring with 22.3 points per contest as he helped No. 9 Tarleton
improve to 7-1 on the year with a pair of 25-point games in the
two wins. Midwestern State’s Trevor Fuller was named the league’s
Defensive Player of the Week as he keyed defensive efforts for # 14
Midwestern State in wins over St. Mary’s and Oklahoma Christian as
the Mustangs improved to 7-1 on the season. The 6-8 forward from
Dallas averaged 6.5 points and 6.5 rebounds a game to go along

Head coach Tom Brown was hired on
April 16, 2014, as the 17th head coach in
WT men’s basketball history.
The Buffs recently completed an im-
pressive season under Brown in his rookie
campaign in Canyon. While returning just
three student-athletes who saw playing
time the year prior and picked last in the
conference preseason poll, WT finished the
season with a 17-12 overall record (12-4 at
home) and 7-7 mark in Lone Star Confer-
ence play. They made the LSC Tournament
as the fifth seed and fell in the quarterfinals
to eventual tournament champion Texas
A&M-Commerce.
In 2014-15, the Buffs started out the sea-
son ranked 159th in the Hero Sports Division
II Rankings and improved greatly to finish
the season ranked 50th in DII Hoops.
Senior guard Tez Dumars made a mark
on the WT record book last season as he
moved into 4th place on the all-time scor-
ing list with 1,230 points to passed former
NBA All-Star Maurice Cheeks. Arlington
native David Chavlovich was named
the Lone Star Conference Freshman of
the Year, he was also named to the LSC
All-Conference Second Team for his efforts
on the court, averaging 16.5 points per
contest to go along with 93 assists and 30
steals.
The 2014-15 season was also a banner
year in the classroom. The team achieved
the highest recorded Team GPA in the
history of West Texas A&M Men’s Basketball
as the team increased their team GPA by
more than 38% over the previous season.
Brown has 21 years of coaching experi-
ence overall, and was part of one of the
most successful Division II men’s basketball
programs in recent history as he helped
lead the Warriors to the NCAA Division II
National Championship in 2006 and 2008,
while finishing runner-up in 2007. During
that span, Winona State posted an unprec-
edented 105-6 record.
Named Division II Bulletin’s ‘Program
of the Decade’ for 2000-2009, WSU set a
NCAA Division II record with 57 consecutive
wins, a run that began on Jan. 13, 2006,
and didn’t end until the national title game
on Mar. 24, 2007. The 2007-08 Warrior squad
won a NCAA record 38 games.
An excellent recruiter and teacher,
Brown recruited and developed some of
the best players in the nation with three Na-
tional Player of the Year recipients, along
with six first team All-America honorees and
10 players total have earned All-America
status. He helped coach five NSIC Most
Valuable Players, seven NSIC Defensive
Players of the Year and two Elite Eight Most
Valuable Players.
In addition to on the court success, the
Warriors were very strong in the classroom
as the men’s basketball team had a
grade-point average of 3.0 or better each
semester since Fall 2011 under Brown, with
a graduation rate 35% higher than the
national average.
Brown attended and played basket-
ball at Winona State from 1988-1992. He
finished his Warrior career ranked fifth in
program history in scoring, second in assists
and first in steals. He earned his bachelor’s
degree in 1993 in physical education and
completed his master’s degree in educa-
tion in 1998.
He and his wife Trisha are the proud par-
ents of three children, TJ, Zach and Ella.
