WT HEAD COACH TOM BROWN
Head coach Tom Brown was hired on April 16, 2014, as the 17th head coach in WT
men’s basketball history. The Buffs completed an impressive season under Brown in his
rookie campaign in Canyon. While returning just three student-athletes who saw play-
ing time the year prior and picked last in the conference preseason poll, WT finished the
season with a 17-12 overall record (12-4 at home) and 7-7 mark in Lone Star Confer-
ence play. They made the LSC Tournament as the fifth seed and fell in the quarterfinals
to eventual tournament champion Texas A&M-Commerce.
2014-15 IN REVIEW
In 2014-15, the Buffs started out the season ranked 159th in the Hero Sports Division
II Rankings and improved greatly to finish the season ranked 50th in all of DII Hoops.
Senior guard Tez Dumars made a mark on the WT record book last season as he moved
into 4th place on the all-time scoring list with 1,230 points to passed former NBA All-Star
Maurice Cheeks. Arlington native David Chavlovich was named the Lone Star Con-
ference Freshman of the Year, he was also named to the LSC All-Conference Second
Team for his efforts on the court, averaging 16.5 points per contest to go along with 93
assists and 30 steals. The 2014-15 season was also a banner year in the classroom. The
team achieved the highest recorded Team GPA in the history of West Texas A&M Men’s
Basketball as the team increased their team GPA by more than 38% over the previous
season.

LSC PRESEASON MEDIA DAY (OCT. 28)
Tarleton State earned top billing according to the 2015-16 Lone Star Conference men’s
basketball preseason poll announced by the league’s offices on October 28th. TSU
claimed the top spot with 19 first-place votes and 173 points after winning the LSC
Championship last season with a 12-2 league mark. Midwestern State finished second
with 151 points including the remaining three first-place votes. Angelo State was third
with 120 points, followed by defending tournament champions Texas A&M-Commerce
in fourth (109). West Texas A&M was picked fifth with 84 points with Cameron sixth (72),
Texas A&M- Kingsville (55), and Eastern New Mexico (28) rounding out the poll.
MSU’s Bretson McNeal was tabbed Preseason Player of the Year. The LSC has eight
teams set for this season and the league race should be as competitive as ever. The
season begins November 13 with LSC teams playing a double round robin league
schedule, in which each team plays a home and away contest against each of the
other teams to determine the LSC champion. The LSC champion will be the regular
season winner determined by league games, while the postseason tournament winner
is designated as LSC Tournament Champion and earns the conference’s automatic
qualification. The top eight teams in the final conference standings qualify for the post-
season tournament set for March 2-5 in Allen, Texas.

Texas Tech Probable Starters
TEXAS TECH
The Texas Tech Red Raiders enter Monday night following a 100-49
exhibition win over D-III Concordia University (Tex.) last Monday
night in Lubbock. The Red Raiders finished the 2014-15 season with
an overall record of 13-19 with a 3-15 mark in Big 12 play as they ad-
vanced to the Phillips 66 Big 12 Tournament before falling to the rival
Texas Longhorns in the opening round, 65-53. Texas Tech registered
a 13-6 record inside of United Supermarkets Arena last season with
three of those wins coming in conference play. The Red Raiders
have made 14 NCAA Tournaments including five trips to the Swet
Sixteen since 1925 with their last postseason appearances coming
during the 2006-07 season when they fell to Boston College (75-84)
in the opening round.
TEXAS TECH HEAD COACH TUBBY SMITH
The Red Raiders are led by Tubby Smith who is in his third season in
Lubbock, leading the team to an overall record of 13-19 last season
with a trip to the Big 12 Conference Tournament. Smith is one of the
legends of college basketball, being a part of 771 collegiate wins
and 23 trips to the NCAA Tournament since he started coaching as
an assistant at Virginia Commonwealth in 1979. Smith is one of sev-
en active head coaches to win 500 games and a National Champi-
onship (Kentucky, 1998) while also being just one of five coaches to
lead four different teams to the NCAA Tournament (Tulsa, Georgia,
Kentucky, Minnesota). Smith is a three-time National Coach of the
Year with four NCAA Elite Eight appearances while registering 20 or
more victories in 19 of his 23 seasons as a head coach.
THE SERIES vs. TEXAS TECH
The Buffs lead the all-time series against the Red Raiders, 56-27 with
the last meeting between the two teams coming on December
12, 1982 in a 95-77 Tech win in Lubbock. The Buffs are 15-17 all-time
in Lubbock dating back to the series starting in 1925 with their last
road win coming on January 10, 1950 in a 60-43 victory during
Border Conference play. WT is 41-10 all-time against the Red Raiders
in Canyon/Amarillo with the last win in the series by the Buffs coming
on December 1, 1980 (64-62). West Texas A&M (formerly West Texas
Techers’ and West Texas State) competed in the Division I Border
Conference from 1941 until the league’s dispansion in 1961 while
Texas Tech (formerly Texas Technical College) competed in the
league from 1932-1956. The teams also competed against each
under during WT’s run in the Missouri Valley Conference (1972-85)
while the Red Raiders joined the Southwest Conference (1956-95)
before becoming a founding member of the Big 12 (1995-Present).
The Buffs will be competing in a Division I exhibition game for the first
time since October 30, 1995 when they fell to Colorado State in Fort
Collins, 94-64.

Head coach Tom Brown was hired on
April 16, 2014, as the 17th head coach in
WT men’s basketball history.
The Buffs recently completed an im-
pressive season under Brown in his rookie
campaign in Canyon. While returning just
three student-athletes who saw playing
time the year prior and picked last in the
conference preseason poll, WT finished the
season with a 17-12 overall record (12-4 at
home) and 7-7 mark in Lone Star Confer-
ence play. They made the LSC Tournament
as the fifth seed and fell in the quarterfinals
to eventual tournament champion Texas
A&M-Commerce.
In 2014-15, the Buffs started out the sea-
son ranked 159th in the Hero Sports Division
II Rankings and improved greatly to finish
the season ranked 50th in DII Hoops.
Senior guard Tez Dumars made a mark
on the WT record book last season as he
moved into 4th place on the all-time scor-
ing list with 1,230 points to passed former
NBA All-Star Maurice Cheeks. Arlington
native David Chavlovich was named
the Lone Star Conference Freshman of
the Year, he was also named to the LSC
All-Conference Second Team for his efforts
on the court, averaging 16.5 points per
contest to go along with 93 assists and 30
steals.
The 2014-15 season was also a banner
year in the classroom. The team achieved
the highest recorded Team GPA in the
history of West Texas A&M Men’s Basketball
as the team increased their team GPA by
more than 38% over the previous season.
Brown has 21 years of coaching experi-
ence overall, and was part of one of the
most successful Division II men’s basketball
programs in recent history as he helped
lead the Warriors to the NCAA Division II
National Championship in 2006 and 2008,
while finishing runner-up in 2007. During
that span, Winona State posted an unprec-
edented 105-6 record.
Named Division II Bulletin’s ‘Program
of the Decade’ for 2000-2009, WSU set a
NCAA Division II record with 57 consecutive
wins, a run that began on Jan. 13, 2006,
and didn’t end until the national title game
on Mar. 24, 2007. The 2007-08 Warrior squad
won a NCAA record 38 games.
An excellent recruiter and teacher,
Brown recruited and developed some of
the best players in the nation with three Na-
tional Player of the Year recipients, along
with six first team All-America honorees and
10 players total have earned All-America
status. He helped coach five NSIC Most
Valuable Players, seven NSIC Defensive
Players of the Year and two Elite Eight Most
Valuable Players.
In addition to on the court success, the
Warriors were very strong in the classroom
as the men’s basketball team had a
grade-point average of 3.0 or better each
semester since Fall 2011 under Brown, with
a graduation rate 35% higher than the
national average.
Brown attended and played basket-
ball at Winona State from 1988-1992. He
finished his Warrior career ranked fifth in
program history in scoring, second in assists
and first in steals. He earned his bachelor’s
degree in 1993 in physical education and
completed his master’s degree in educa-
tion in 1998.
He and his wife Trisha are the proud par-
ents of three children, TJ, Zach and Ella.
