The West Texas A&M Buffaloes, seeded third in the South Central Region, will face the sixth seeded Texas A&M-Commerce Lions in the regional quarterfinals on Saturday. WT is 24-8 overall and finished 12-6 in conference play, while TAMUC is 19-10 overall and 10-8 in conference. The Buffaloes lead the all-time series against the Lions 50-31. In their last meeting on February 23rd, WT defeated TAMUC 100-98. A win on Saturday would advance WT to the regional semifinals on Sunday against the winner of TAMU-Kingsville and UT Permian Basin.

The third seeded Buffaloes of West Texas A&M
enter their 14th NCAA Division II Tournament
this weekend as they take on the sixth seeded
Lions of Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday
afternoon at 1 p.m. CT inside of Lockridge
Arena in Golden, Colorado on the campus of
Colorado School of Mines.
- SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
TEXAS A&M-COMMERCE
The Lions are guided by 17th year head coach
Sam Walker. Entering the 2016-17 season,
Walker stands as the second-winningest active
coach in the Lone Star Conference with 266
career victories, and also ranks fifth all-time in
winning percentage among coaches with at
least 50 career victories, winning 58 percent of
his games.
Texas A&M-Commerce enters the NCAA Post-
season with an overall record of 19-10 as they
finished the regular season with a mark of 10-8
in the Lone Star Conference. The Lions topped
Cameron in the LSC Quarterfinals (54-52) be-
fore falling to eventual champion UT Permian
Basin (63-76) in the Semifinals at the Allen Event
Center. TAMUC is making their sixth overall ap-
pearance in the NCAA Tournament (‘96, ‘97,
‘98, ‘05, ‘15, ‘17) with an overall record of 5-5.
The Lions are led offensively by Malik Albert
who has gone 164-of-371 from the floor includ-
ing 38-of-128 from deep and 115-of-168 from
the charity stripe while averaging 4.8 rebounds
and 17.8 points per game so far this season.
TAMUC has gone 824-of-1867 (44.1%) from the
field including 198-of-642 (30.8%) from deep
and 545-of-828 (65.8%) from the free throw line
while averaging 38.4 (-1.9) rebounds and 82.5
(+4.8) points per game.
THE SERIES vs. TEXAS A&M-COMMERCE
WT leads the all-time series against the Lions, 50-
31 with the LSC foes splitting their regular season
series as the home team claimed the victory
in both matchups. Saturday will mark the first
ever meeting between the two programs in
the NCAA Tournament and it will be just the
fifth time that the Buffs will face off with an LSC
opponent in the NCAA postseason (2-2).
WT IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
The Buffs (24-8) enter the tournament for the first
time since the 2011-12 campaign as third year
head coach Tom Brown has led the Buffs to
back-to-back 20 win seasons and three straight
appearances in the LSC Championships. WT
has claimed the most wins (24) since the 1997-
98 campaign while finishing a perfect 15-0 in-
side of the First United Bank Center this season.
It will mark the 14th overall appearance in the
NCAA Division II Tournament for the Buffs since
1986-87 as they have gone 5-15 (.250) overall in
the postseason with a run to the NCAA Division
II Elite Eight in 1997-98.

The third-seeded West Texas A&M men’s
basketball team dropped a 68-63 decision
to No. 6-seed Texas A&M-Kingsville Friday
afternoon in the quarterfinal round of the
2017 Lone Star Conference Men’s Basketball
Championship.
The Buffs went 22-of-52 (42.3%) from the floor in
the game including 7-of-27 (25.9%) from deep
and 12-of-17 (70.6%) from the free throw line
with 36 rebounds (five offensive, 26 defensive),
12 assists, 14 turnovers, four blocks and four
steals. WT was led offensively by Ryan Quaid
and Eric Golightly Jr. who scored 17 points
each as Quaid finished the afternoon with nine
rebounds.
LAST MEETING WITH TAMUC (FEB. 23, 2017)
WT moved to a perfect 14-0 inside of the First
United Bank Center as they topped the Lions
of Texas A&M-Commerce, 100-98 in front of
almost 1,000 fans in Lone Star Conference
action in Canyon.
The Buffs went 29-of-58 (50%) from the floor
including 11-of-31 (35.5%) from long range and
31-of-42 (73.8%) from the charity stripe with 37
rebounds (seven offensive, 30 defensive), 14
assists, 12 turnovers, four blocks and six steals.
Chavlovich led the Buffs with 29 points followed
by a new career high from Prince with 24 while
Quaid led the way with nine rebounds.

Northwest Missouri State picked up 14 of the possible 16 first place
votes to sit atop of the poll with 398 points followed by Bellarmine (1
first place, 379), Fairmont State (349), Hawai’i Pacific (1 first place,

ALL-LONE STAR CONFERENCE
West Texas A&M’s David Chavlovich was named to the All-Lone Star
Conference 1st Team during Wednesday annual postseason awards
banquet in Allen, Texas. Jordan Evans was named to the All-LSC 2nd
Team while Ryan Quaid and Eric Golightly Jr. were honored for their
efforts in the classroom as members of the LSC All-Academic Team.
THE ROAD TO SIOUX FALLS
The 64-team field for the 2017 NCAA DII Men’s Basketball Champion-
ship will begin the Road to Sioux Falls this weekend as Regional Tour-
nament takes place on March 11-14 with the top seed in each of the
eight regions across the country hosting the single-elimination event.
The 2016 NCAA Division II Elite Eight will take place in Sioux Falls, South
Dakota on March 22-25 at the Sanford Pentagon.

Tom Brown was hired on April 16, 2014, as the
17th head coach in WT men’s basketball history.
In just two short years Brown has turned around
the West Texas A&M University Basketball Program.
Brown led the team to its first 20+ win season since
2010-11. The Buffs were picked to finish 5th in the
LSC this past season and despite a pre-season,
season ending injury to sophomore starter Carl
White the team still managed to finish 2nd in the
LSC with an overall record of 21-10. The 2nd place
finish is the highest since the conference was split
North/South. The Buffs continued to battle minor
injuries throughout the year but every player that
was called on would step up. Under Brown’s di-
rection the team had some very strong individual
performances. WT sophomore guard David Chav-
lovich led the way. For his outstanding play David
was named an NABC All-American, the Lone Star
Conference Player of the Year and 1st Team All-
LSC selection. Sophomore Jordan Evans (playing
in his first season) received honorable mention
All-LSC acclaim. The Buffs again were dominate in
the classroom as the team GPA exceeded a 3.0
for the year.
2015-16 the Buffs set a new record in the class-
room. The team recorded the highest GPA for
Men’s Basketball in a season.
Coach Brown inherited a WT team that won
two games in the LSC and 10 games overall in
2013-14. Brown had to start from scratch in late
April, the team had three seniors and one walkon
redshirt freshman. Just three student-athletes saw
playing time from the previous year and the team
was picked to finish last in the Lone Star Confer-
ence Preseason Poll. However, under Brown West
Texas A&M University finished the season 5th in the
LSC and posted a 17-12 overall record. The Buffs
made the LSC Tournament as the fifth seed. There
were some individual accolades as well, all three
of the returning seniors improved on their scoring
average from the previous season. Tez Dumars
surpassed Maurice Cheeks in WT All-Time scoring
and finished his career ranked 4th All-Time in
scoring at WT. David Chavlovich was the squads
leading scorer, 2nd Team All-Conference Perform-
er and the Freshman of the Year in the LSC as he
averaged 16.5 points per contest to go along with
93 assists and 30 steals.
In 2014-15, the Buffs set a new record in the
classroom. The team recorded the highest GPA
for Men’s Basketball in a season.
Tom was the driving force as the Associate
Head Coach and head recruiter in the most
successful Division II men’s basketball program
in recent history at Winona State University. The
Warriors won the NCAA Division II National Cham-
pionship in 2006 and 2008 and finished as the
National Finalist in 2007. During that span, Winona
State posted an unprecedented 105-6 record.
WT Assistant Coach Quincy Henderson played for
Coach Brown from 2005-2008. Quincy’s record as
a collegiate player at WSU was 105-6.
Named Division II Bulletin’s ‘Program of the
Decade’ for 2000-2009, WSU set a NCAA Division II
record with 57 consecutive wins, a run that began
on Jan. 13, 2006, and didn’t end until the national
title game on Mar. 24, 2007. The 2007-08 Warrior
squad won a NCAA record 38 games.
An excellent recruiter and teacher, Brown
recruited and developed some of the best
players in the nation with three National Player
of the Year recipients, along with seven first team
All-America honorees. 11 players total have
earned All-America status including WT Sopho-
more David Chavlovich. Brown has coached five
NSIC Most Valuable Players, seven NSIC Defen-
sive Players of the Year and two Elite Eight Most
Valuable Players.
Brown is doing it again at WT as David Chav-
lovich has earned both Freshman of the Year and
Player of the Year in the best Division II Confer-
ence in the Nation, the Lone Star Conference.
Brown attended and played basketball
(1988-1992) and baseball (1991) at Winona State
University. He finished his Warrior career ranked
fifth in program history in scoring, second in assists
and first in steals. He earned his bachelor’s degree
in 1993 in physical education and completed his
master’s degree in education in 1998.
He and his wife Dr. Trisha Brown are the proud
parents of three children, TJ, Zach and Ella. Dr.
Brown is currently an Instructor and works in the
Sports & Exercise Science Department at West
Texas A&M.
