2. Objectives
The Society’s objectives are to promote,
advance and support the Earth Sciences
within the scientific and wider communities.

Australian Geological Convention
The 19th convention is held in conjunction
with the Australian Institute of Geoscientists as
the Australian Earth Sciences Convention 2008
in Perth (AESC).
Publications
Australian Journal of Earth Sciences
(Scientific journal, 8 issues p.a.), Alcheringa
(Palaeontology journal, 4 issues p.a.), The
Australian Geologist (TAG, 4 issues p.a.);
Abstracts of Conventions, Divisional and
Specialist Group books and field guides. AJES is
available as either hard copy & on-line, or on-
line only. All Members receive TAG.
Member
Members are usually graduates of a university
or other tertiary institution with a major in
Earth Sciences, or graduates actively engaged
in work relating to Earth Sciences. In special
circumstances the Executive Committee may
approve for Membership:
(a) people who have been employed in some
technical aspect of Earth Sciences for a
period of at least five years or
(b) people who have undertaken and
published the results of research
in the Earth Sciences.
Associate Member
There shall be no specific qualifications
required of Associate Members, but every
candidate for election must be at least 18 years
old, and should produce evidence of a genuine
interest in the Earth Sciences. A school or
other non-commercial group may become an
Associate Member. People who are eligible for
Membership cannot be Associate Members,
unless normally a resident outside Australia.
Joint Member
Joint Members are recognised partners of
an existing Member and fulfil the Member
category requirements. Joint Members have
Member privileges excluding the journal.
Retired Member
A Member of the Society of at least ten years
standing who has retired from professional
practice is eligible to apply for Retired Mem-
bership. Retired Members retain all privileges
and have the option of membership with or
without the journal.
Student Member
Student members are enrolled full/part-time
studying Earth Sciences at a tertiary institution
or a secondary school, and must provide certi-
fication from their Head of Department on this
application form. Includes students
at undergraduate and postgraduate level. Stu-
dent members receive the Australian Journal of
Earth Sciences and the GSA online newsletter
and a hard copy of The Australian Geologist.
Students may choose Alcheringa for a slightly
higher fee, rather than the Australian Journal
of Earth Sciences. Students may be associated
with a Specialist Group for additional charges
or receive a hard copy of the Australian Journal
of Earth Sciences for an additional fee.
Graduate Member
Graduate Members are recently qualified Earth
Scientists. This category is only available for
two years, normally immediately after
applicants complete studies and includes
AJES via internet only.
Annual Membership Fees: All fees quoted are in Australian dollars
Membership is from January to December; members joining after July have the option to pay 50% of the fees and receive publications from
July to December only (this option excludes ‘Student Membership with journal online only and without journal’, and Specialist Group subscription fees).
Overseas members please add additional postage of AU$32 for the journal and AU$24 for The Australian Geologist.
