Scenarios workshops offer first glimpse of LAC storylines
At the Scenarios regional workshop (from left): Ged Davis, Executive Chair of the study; Karl Rose, Senior Director, Scenarios and Policies; workshop participants
The Scenarios study group held two workshops in
Buenos Aires last month (28–30 July) to explore
plausible storylines for an upcoming deep-dive on
Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).
The study group’s discussion (29–30 July) built
on the insights provided by regional energy
experts in an open workshop on 28–29 July.
From the discussions the Scenarios study
group was able to formulate broad scenarios
storylines for the LAC region. These storylines will
be further discussed and refined in another
Scenarios workshop to take place in London on
2–3 September.
Provided there is sufficient interest, these initial
workshop results will form the basis and

Energy Resources study.
What synergies are there with other WEC
studies? How will these synergies be
exploited?
The WER study group will closely work together
with the other WEC flagship study groups. An
important task is to support all WEC flagships with
aligned, up-to-date data and ensuring consistency
of data across the WEC flagship programmes. The
Scenarios and Resources core team will facilitate
and ensure the sharing and utilisation of infor-mation,
data and insights from cross-cutting topics.
How can member committees take part?
The unique feature of the study is that the neces-sary
data are collected from the member commit-tees
which ensure a global coverage of credible
and reliable information. We integrate the unique
knowledge of the nearly 100 member committees
in the different world regions in the report. The

framework for a further regional deep-dive,
accompanied by modelling to quantify the
scenarios. Key messages for the region resulting
from these initial findings will be presented at the
Executive Assembly in Cartagena this October.
The Scenarios team expresses sincere thanks
to the WEC’s Argentine Committee (CACME) and
the Buenos Aires Institute of Technology (ITBA)
for hosting the Buenos Aires events and to the

Interview
World Energy Resources is the WEC’s longest-standing study.
Hans-Wilhelm Schiffer, Executive Chair, provides an update on
the work.
World Energy Resources has over 80 years
of history. What will be new over the next
few years?
The World Energy Resources is the most estab-lished
World Energy Council flagship programme.
In addition to resource data, the report also
assesses current and emerging technologies, to
provide a solid basis for energy policy and decision
making. A recent new development is that the 12
conventional and renewable resources, which are
covered in the report, are supplemented by the
cross-cutting topics of energy efficiency technolo-gies,
carbon capture, usage and storage [CC(U)S]
and energy storage.
How is the next edition of the study
progressing?
The World Energy Resources (WER) study group
has been established. 146 members from 41 coun-tries
are identified to take an active part in the
programme’s ongoing work. The Terms of Refer-ence
have been finalised and the project plan for
2014 to 2016 has been produced. Next steps are:
Resource data and information on existing and
emerging technologies will be collected and evalu-ated.
Resource-specific key facts and data will be
produced as a result of the Knowledge Network
members’ research and are to be published by the
WEC during key events. They will then form part of
the specific resource chapter in the final report.
What should we expect to come out from
the study this year?
In 2014 we will come out with issue papers on
hydro, bioenergy, waste and e-storage. These
papers will be done in co-operation with members
of the Scenarios study group to ensure optimal use
of the information and work. We are likely to have
a hydro and bioenergy report to be presented in
Cartagena in October 2014. Since the Scenarios
study group is focusing on Latin America, large
hydro and bioenergy are of particular interest to
this region, with a strong connection to the energy-water-
food nexus. In 2015 we will be compiling
issue papers on the main fossil and renewable
resources.
