7. PAKISTAN STEELPAKISTAN STEEL
INTRODUCTION
Pakistan Steel is located 40 km south east of Karachi in close vicinity to port Muhammad Bin
Qasim.
The foundation of Pakistan Steel dates back to 1970’s when Russia helped the government of
Pakistan.
Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto (Shaheed) laid the foundation stone on 30th December, 1973
7
8. MAIN UNITSMAIN UNITS
Pakistan Steel includes the following main units in its plant,
Coke Oven and By Product Plant (COBP)
Oxygen Plant (OP)
Cold Rolling Mill (CRM)
Air, Steam & Gas Network (ASGN)
Sintering Plant (SP)
Iron Making Department (IMD)
Steel Making Plant (SMP)
Refractories
Thermal Power Plant and Turbo Blower Station

9. PRODUCTSPRODUCTS
Pakistan Steel offers following main products,
Coke
Pig Iron
Billets
Cold Rolled Sheets
Hot Rolled Sheets
Galvanized Sheets
The production capacity of 1.1 Million ton of
steel expandable up to 3.0 Million ton per
annum.

10
11. COKE OVEN BY PRODUCT PLANT (C.O.B.P)COKE OVEN BY PRODUCT PLANT (C.O.B.P)
In steel mills Coke oven & by product plant is specially designed for the production of
coking coal.
The main by-product of this plant is coke oven gas.
The annual production complex may be summarized as follows:
1) Coke 970,000 m Tons
2) Coke oven gas 499 m m3
3) Dehydrated Tar 45,500 m Tons
4) Ammonium sulphate 17,200 m Tons
11
12. PRODUCTION UNITSPRODUCTION UNITS
Five main production units including:
Coal Handling & Processing Plant (CH&PP)
Coke Oven Plant (COP)
Coke Quenching Plant(CQP)
By Products Plant (BPP)
Bio Chemical Treatment Plant(BCTP)
12
14. COKE HANDLING & PROCESSING PLANTCOKE HANDLING & PROCESSING PLANT
The raw material coal is imported mainly from Canada & Australia containing
less quantity of Ash and other impurities.
The varieties of coal are conveyed to coal handling department through the
conveyor network from Port Qasim.
The length or the conveyor is about 3.2 Km.
Stored in stockyard in the form of huge piles.
14
15. COKE HANDLING & PROCESSING PLANT
Coal types and their composition.

18. COKE OVEN BATTERIES
The main task of coke oven plant is to produce coke.
COKE?
blackish grey in color
92% carbon
high calorific value about 13,800 BTU/kg
It is used in blast furnace for smelting of pig iron
18
19. COKE OVEN BATTERIES
Coke oven consist of two batteries each having 49 ovens (30 burners in each oven) having a
capacity of each oven is about 22 tones.
Silica bricks are used in oven lining because it has high heat resistant capability.
There is a lining of 30 burners in between the ovens which heat the oven at a temperature of
1050 o
C.
About 22.4 tons of coal blend is charge per oven 17 tons of product is obtained remaining used as
a volatile compound.
Duration of coking periods depends upon temperature of 1050 o
C coking period is about 22 hr
19
20. COKE OVEN BATTERIES
Some characteristic of coke oven batteries
Effective volume of carbonization 3.0 cubic meter
Effective length 14200 mm
Effective height 5200 mm
Average width 410 mm
Thickness of wall 105 mm
Thickness of oven flooring 1030 mm
Single charge one oven with 23.5 tons
Coking cycle of oven 15.3 hr
20
22. COKE QUENCHING PLANTCOKE QUENCHING PLANT
There are two types of quenching normally used in steel making mills.
1. Coke Dry Quenching
2. Coke Wet Quenching
22
23. COKE DRY QUENCHINGCOKE DRY QUENCHING
Red hot coke is cooled by means of counter flow of nitrogen.
Nitrogen is a cooling media and as a result of this heated nitrogen produces which is used in
boiler to produce steam as by products.
A boiler is also used to utilize waste heated nitrogen of this section.
23
24. COKE WET QUENCHINGCOKE WET QUENCHING
It is an easy way to cool down the hot coking coal with the help of sprinkling of
water.
24
25. COKE SCREENING SYSTEMCOKE SCREENING SYSTEM
This network is used to separate the quenched coke of size +80 mm and -80 mm
by using the network of screening then stored into a bunker.
25
28. BY-PRODUCT SECTIONBY-PRODUCT SECTION
The by-product plant recovers following products:
Anhydrous Tar (46500 T/year)
Ammonium sulphate (17200 T/year)
Cooled and purified coke oven gas is used as a fuel in coke oven batteries and
other plants of Pakistan steel mill
28
29. BY-PRODUCT SECTIONBY-PRODUCT SECTION
Coke oven gas is collected in the gas collector from coke oven batteries.
The gas goes to the primary gas cooler &
The condensate consisting of naphthalene, phenol, coal tar, liquor ammonia and sludge goes to
decanter, in which components settle by density difference.
Coal tar maintained in the decanter then pumped to the final gas cooler.
29
30. BY-PRODUCT SECTIONBY-PRODUCT SECTION
The third component is condensate ammonia liquor which is overflowed to the
storage tank from where it goes to battery where it is used to cool the coke
oven gas in the gas collector.
The ammonium sulphate section serves for the recovery of ammonia from coke
oven gas in the form of ammonium sulphate.
30
33. BIO CHEMICAL WATER TREATMENT PLANTBIO CHEMICAL WATER TREATMENT PLANT
Bio-chemical treatment plant treats the cooling water used in By-product plant
for removal of phenol and other toxic substances.
Bacteria (microbes), which decompose phenol, are added in these tanks.
Waste is broken down by bacteria, which is removed as sludge in settling tank.

35. Directorate of Industrial Liaison (DIL)Directorate of Industrial Liaison (DIL)
The prime objectives of DIL are to create and enhances the required University-Industry linkages
in the form of various activities.
DIL is then involved in arranging internship opportunities in summer and winter vacation for
students in different organizations or industries.
DIL is engaged in collecting the topics of final year Engineering Projects and arranging
technical/practical help from the industries related with the projects.
In addition, DIL arranges perpetual basis study visits for the students and faculty at various
industries to get practical exposure of industry.
