The protagonist is a nameless KGB agent who spent 20 years living underground in the London metro after a nuclear war. He leaves the metro when resources run out and discovers that many surface dwellers have been disfigured by radiation, with some even becoming zombies. He shoots the "ghouls" out of a perceived need for self defense or mercy. The minor character is simply referred to - he is an infected resident of London whose killing awakens the others and signals the threat they pose.
2. + The Protagonist
The main character is the so called antagonist in the
opening sequence. He’s nameless, which is supposed
to create more of a mystery around him, as he is a
KGB agent in the United Kingdom. He killed one of the
British soldiers patrolling the metro, stole his clothes,
and pretended to be one of the troops for 20 years in
order to gain shelter underground. He was supposed to
steal documents about the location of the last
remaining source of Oil in the UK, but when the bombs
fell, he abandoned his mission, trying to survive. He
leaves the Metro after the resources ran out, the metro
station itself was isolated from the rest thanks to an
earthquake that was caused by bombs hitting the
ground. There was a mass suicide in the station,
people gave up as he stood there and watched, mercy
killing the ones who begged him for it. Note that this
isn’t going to be in the actual sequence, just describing
his backstory. He then goes outside to see how the
environment is doing, he was fully stocked on filters for
his gas mask, which he has on all the time in the
sequence. After the opening sequence ends, the plot of
the movie turns to mass murder as the new residents
of London show themselves to him, ghouls they’re
called, they’re not zombies, but normal people who’s
skin was torn off by radiation, some have damaged
brains and are zombies. Our protagonist however just
shoots whoever he sees, as he shot one of them out of
mercy, they thought he was there to finish them all off,
so they retaliated. In general, his personality isn’t really
shown in the opening sequence at all, as the only thing
that might spring some emotion is his narration, other
than that it isn’t really clear on how he feels of things,
as his gas mask prevents the audience from seeing his
facial expressions.
3. + Minor Character
He’s just there to get shot at,
there really isn’t any back story
to him. The way he’s killed is
what’s significant because it
awakens London’s ‘residents’.
He’s an infected from the
bombings, he’s called a ghoul
because his skin was corrupt
from high radiation, sort of like
cancer. With enough dosage
you’ll become resistant to any
sort of radiation. However, the
downside is you’ll have rusted
skin.
