2. Project Summary
Gillette is a leading global brand based in Boston, Massachusetts, and known
for its safety razor invention. Current product lines launched in China include
Flying Eagle, Blue Blades, Vector Plus, Sensor Excel, Mach3 and Mach Turbo
and price range is from 9 RMB up to around 50 RMB.
Market
China
Target Users
Current Vector Plus users
Annual Sales
9 million pieces (for Vector Plus) and blades sales are about 27M units.
Design Requirements
Gillette requires a design consultancy, with successful experience designing for
China consumer market to assist in the realization of this project. The goal of
the project is to redesign a razor that will allow current Vector Plus users to
trade up to a higher value impression handle. The product will based upon
existing cartridge system of Sensor Excel.
Good dialogue and communication between Gillette and Nova is crucial for a
smooth, speedy and effective project, this can be done by email or fax or phone
between the relevant individuals in the team. Face to face meetings can be
arranged between both parties in Shanghai and USA should they be thought
useful. For the start of the project, a kick-off meeting between both parties may
be relevant to discuss all upcoming issues relevant to the project.

4. Project Scope
Based upon Gillette’s product plan, Nova will focus on developing feasible
design concepts and deliver full part design in Pro-E ready for production
tooling. The following proposal outlines a 4-phase process for creating the new
razor handle.
Phase I. Market and User Research
Understanding the needs and experiences of Chinese user groups ensure that
the new razor offers unique and attractive consumer benefits. This is a vital part
of the product’s success. We will go deeply in research phase by Nova’s rapid
research method to study Chinese palm shape and aestheticism so that
ergonomics and esthetics can be integrated into our design and enhance
product value.
Activities
- kick-off meeting
- Product study & analysis by leveraging Gillette information and internal
discussion
- Start internal brainstorming, selective user in-depth interview and quick
ethnographic observation to come out issue report
- Consolidate all information and project team discussion to define design
directions
- Present research finding with Gillette
Deliverables
- A comprehensive market and user research report handbook

5. Phase II. Concept Design
Activities
- Finalization of Design Requirements and Design Criteria based upon phase I
discussion and conclusion.
- Project Team brainstorming of range conceptual solutions
- Initial conceptual sketches to explore ergonomics/usability issues and styling
directions.
- 4 rough mockup(s) (possibly foam, but not limited) to illustrate how each
concept addresses and embodies ergonomics, styling and form issues in 1:1
scale and may be used for preliminary evaluation.
- PhotoShop illustrations to further define supplement styling, form, color &
material and other design details.
- Mid-phase review with Gillette to determine two general directions for further
development
Deliverables
- 4 concept sketches in PhotoShop format
- 4 rough foam mock-up(s)
- General description of concept directions

6. Phase III Concept Development
Activities
- Concept synthesis, modification and refinement based on the phase II review
results.
- Establishing 3D CAD database in Alias platform.
- Develop detail full color 3D renderings, illustrating product color, material,
form and styling and functionality issues.
- Mid-phase review with Gillette to determine one feasible solution.
- Discussion with Gillette’s engineers regarding engineering issues and the
production requirements
- CAD data modification as needed based on mid-phase review results.
- Data preparation and prototype model-making
- Review final one appearance models that will be utilized for design approval
and engineering feedback
Deliverables
- 2 detail full color 3D renderings of choose concepts
- IGES surface files with preliminary parts and assembly.
- 1 non-working appearance models

7. Phase IV. Development for Production
Activities
- Detailed engineering design generated in fully developed 3D Pro-E database
ready for production implementation.
- Prepare final 2D drawing files detailing the finished design and specification
of the product for costing, component specification, tool-making and production
- Prepare all necessary production documents
Deliverables
- Final 2D drawing files
- Production Documentation (BOM/Assembly drawings)
- Final Pro-E database files for handover (exact data type –IGES/STL etc. to be
advised)
Production Support (to be determined)
Once parts are released to manufacturing, we will support the toolmakers with
technical information as required as they construct the tools. When the first
tooled articles are produced, they are examined and tested to make sure they
accurately capture the intent of the design. Final revision to the parts are made
in the database and passed on to the toolmakers.
