Section 124 of the Canada Labour Code, Part II says
“the Company is responsible for providing a safe and healthy
workplace and for taking all necessary steps to protect the health
and safety of it’s employees…”
Employees are also bound by law to take all reasonable and
necessary steps to ensure their health and safety and even that of
anyone affected by their work.
Employees share a moral and legal responsibility with each and
every other employee for workplace health and safety.

Internal Responsibility System
The internal responsibility system (IRS) is written into the Canada
Labour Code.
Its foundation is that everyone in the workplace - both employees and
employers - is responsible for his or her own safety and for the safety
of co-workers.
Internal responsibility system does the following:

Three Basic Rights
The Canada Labour Code – Part II provides an employee with three
rights:
RIGHT TO KNOW about known or foreseeable hazards in the
workplace and to be provide with the instruction, training and
supervision necessary to protect themselves.
RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE in identifying job-related safety and
health problems and concerns
RIGHT TO REFUSE DANGEROUS WORK if the worker has
reasonable cause to believe that a condition at work is a danger to
himself, herself or another worker; the use or operation of a
machine or thing at work presents a danger; or the performance of
an activity constitutes a danger to the employee or another
employee.

Duties of Employers
Employers have a general obligation or duty to ensure that the health and
safety of every person employed by the employer is protected while they
are working. Employers must:
TAKE every reasonable precaution to protect a worker’s health and safety
MAKE sure necessary safety equipment is provided, used properly and
maintained
INFORM workers and supervisors of any hazards and how to handle them
ENSURE that safe procedures are followed in the workplace
PROVIDE information, instruction, and competent supervision to protect the
health and safety of workers

Duties of Supervisors and Managers
ENSURE all employees working in their areas are fully trained and aware of the
hazards that may be encountered in their workplace, ensuring they work safely
while abiding by Viking’s safety policies.
RESPOND to the hazards reported to them, taking every precaution reasonable,
for employee protection and giving hazards the appropriate level of review and
priority.
ASSIST in the establishment and implementation of safety improvement
measures.
TAKE every reasonable precaution to protect a worker’s health and safety
ENSURE that workers work safely and use the equipment and protective devices
properly where required

Duties of Employees
As an employee under the Canada Labour Code, you are required to:
USE all safety materials, equipment, devices, and clothing that are provided by the
employer and are intended to protect employees
FOLLOW procedures relating to the health and safety of employees follow all
instructions provided by the employer concerning the health and safety of employees
CO-OPERATE with any person carrying out a duty or function required by the Code
REPORT to the employer any thing or circumstance that is likely to be hazardous to
employees or any other person in the workplace
REPORT to the employer all work-related accidents, occupational diseases, or other
hazardous occurrences that have caused injury to you or any other person
REPORT to the employer any situation you believe to be a contravention of Part II of
the Code by the employer, another employee, or any other person

Accountability
Viking uses progressive discipline for occupational health and safety
violations as outlined in the Viking Air Employee handbook and Collective
Agreement.
Conditions that could be considered for disciplinary action include:
• Violation of a supervisor’s safety related instructions.
• Violation of established safety rules and/or procedures.
• Violation of instructions on posted safety related signs.
• Obvious unsafe actions as may be indicated by the improper use of
equipment, horseplay or practical joking, poor housekeeping
practices etc..
• Lack of concern toward safety instructions and programs.
The above circumstances are not all-inclusive. Any other circumstance that
indicates an employee’s disregard for their own safety, the safety of others,
or the neglect of proper care of equipment, may also result in disciplinary
action.

Card.
The purpose of the STAR Card program is to
identify and resolve SAFETY HAZARDS
before they result in an incident.
We want to do everything we can to prevent
workplace injuries and illnesses.

Chromium VI
Activities such as painting, drilling, grinding, riveting and drilling primed
parts, can cause exposure to chromium VI dust. Chromium VI can
cause adverse health risks When doing these tasks, employees are
required to wear the following PPE
- Respirator (must be fit)
- Gloves
- Coveralls
Employees must be aware of those around them while preforming tasks
and ensure that co-workers are adequately protected (e.g. ventilation,
PPE).
Employees must wash their hands and face prior to eating or drinking.
Training on Chromium VI clean up procedures, hygiene procedures and
PPE requirements to follow.

Viking Safety Rules
The safety rules set out below are general rules which must be followed
however they are not an extensive list of area specific concerns.
• Specified safety equipment must be used at all times, and personal
protective equipment or devices must be worn. No exceptions.
• Safety glasses, hearing protection and steel toe boots are mandatory use
for all Viking employees when on the manufacturing floor as defined be the
PPE Matrix. Exclusions are listed in PPE Matrix.
• All forms of violence, bullying and harassment are prohibited.
• Report all accounts of violence, bullying and harassment to your manager
or Director or People and Wellness.
• Lifting operations greater then 50lbs must be completed using two or more
persons
• Confined space entry must be performed according to the Confined Space
Entry Plan.
• Cranes and hoists must be operated by properly trained personnel
• Electrical operations must be performed by qualified personal

• Equipment must be locked out before electrical work can be performed
• Employees must keep appropriate distance between equipment and power
lines
• Fall arrest must be worn when working above 2.4 metres above the nearest
permanent safe level
• When working at heights, follow all instructions as listed in the Fall
Protection Plan.
• Facial hair must not be present at the sealing points of respiratory
equipment
• Visitors and contractors must comply with clean shaven rule is respiratory
equipment is required.
• Do not operate any piece of equipment or do any work other than you have
been trained to use and have been assigned by your supervisor.
• Do not remove danger tags or Lock Outs placed on machinery or
equipment, unless placed on by your person and you are authorized to do
so

Viking Safety Rules
• Equipment and machines must be locked out before performing operator
maintenance such as oiling or cleaning. Never attempt adjustments while
the machine is running.
• Safety devices and machine guards must not be bypassed or removed.
• Make sure all guards are in place and properly adjusted before starting
work on any machine.
• Never tamper with electrical equipment.
• Do not use compressed air for cleaning dust.
• Do not ride or stand on forks of lift trucks or hand trucks while they are in
motion
• Do not exceed a safe speed when operating mobile equipment.
• Only trained operators may operate mobile equipment.
• Do not block Emergency Exits or Fire Extinguishers.
• Do not leave tools on ladders where they could fall and injure someone
• Do not use a ladder with broken, split or otherwise defective rungs
• When using a crane, never pass a die or other load over another person.

Viking Safety Rules
• All flammable liquids and acids must be kept in fireproof containers and
properly identified with labels in separate lockers
• Oily rags must be stored in a fireproof container with a lid, which is to be
kept closed when not in use.
• All flammable and combustible substances are to be kept away from open
flames and sparks.
• Material parts, tools, oil, grease, or other articles must not be left in aisles or
wherever they may cause a trip or slip hazard to any person.
• Protect yourself and fellow workers by helping to keep the plant clean and
tidy at all times. All garbage must be placed in appropriate disposal bins.
• All waste productions must be disposed of according to government
regulations.
• Do not engage in horseplay, running or play practical jokes.
• Report all work injuries and rashes or skin irritation to your supervisor
immediately.

• No food or open drinks are permitted on the shop floor.
• The use of cell phones and ear buds or head phones for the purpose of
listening to music is prohibited on the shop floor
• Do not wear gloves, loose jewellery, rings and loose clothing near any
rotating shafts, spindles, gear belts, or other moveable or moving
equipment/machine ports
• Alcohol and illegal drugs are prohibited on company worksites
• Workers under prescribed medication that may impair their ability to work
safely must notify their supervisor
• Smoking is permitted in designated smoking areas only.

RIGHT TO PARTICIPATE in identifying job-related safety and health problems and concerns RIGHT TO REFUSE DANGEROUS WORK if the worker has reasonable cause to believe that a condition at work is a danger to himself, herself or another worker; the use or operation of a machine or thing at work presents a danger; or the performance of an activity constitutes a danger to the employee or another employee.

Employers must: TAKE every reasonable precaution to protect a worker’s health and safety MAKE sure necessary safety equipment is provided, used properly and maintained INFORM workers and supervisors of any hazards and how to handle them ENSURE that safe procedures are followed in the workplace PROVIDE information, instruction, and competent supervision to protect the health and safety of workers

RESPOND to the hazards reported to them, taking every precaution reasonable, for employee protection and giving hazards the appropriate level of review and priority. ASSIST in the establishment and implementation of safety improvement measures. TAKE every reasonable precaution to protect a worker’s health and safety ENSURE that workers work safely and use the equipment and protective devices properly where required

Conditions that could be considered for disciplinary action include: • Violation of a supervisor’s safety related instructions. • Violation of established safety rules and/or procedures. • Violation of instructions on posted safety related signs. • Obvious unsafe actions as may be indicated by the improper use of equipment, horseplay or practical joking, poor housekeeping practices etc.. • Lack of concern toward safety instructions and programs. The above circumstances are not all-inclusive. Any other circumstance that indicates an employee’s disregard for their own safety, the safety of others, or the neglect of proper care of equipment, may also result in disciplinary action.

Chromium VI can cause adverse health risks When doing these tasks, employees are required to wear the following PPE - Respirator (must be fit) - Gloves - Coveralls Employees must be aware of those around them while preforming tasks and ensure that co-workers are adequately protected (e.g. ventilation, PPE). Employees must wash their hands and face prior to eating or drinking. Training on Chromium VI clean up procedures, hygiene procedures and PPE requirements to follow.

No exceptions. • Safety glasses, hearing protection and steel toe boots are mandatory use for all Viking employees when on the manufacturing floor as defined be the PPE Matrix. Exclusions are listed in PPE Matrix. • All forms of violence, bullying and harassment are prohibited. • Report all accounts of violence, bullying and harassment to your manager or Director or People and Wellness. • Lifting operations greater then 50lbs must be completed using two or more persons • Confined space entry must be performed according to the Confined Space Entry Plan. • Cranes and hoists must be operated by properly trained personnel • Electrical operations must be performed by qualified personal

Never attempt adjustments while the machine is running. • Safety devices and machine guards must not be bypassed or removed. • Make sure all guards are in place and properly adjusted before starting work on any machine. • Never tamper with electrical equipment. • Do not use compressed air for cleaning dust. • Do not ride or stand on forks of lift trucks or hand trucks while they are in motion • Do not exceed a safe speed when operating mobile equipment. • Only trained operators may operate mobile equipment. • Do not block Emergency Exits or Fire Extinguishers. • Do not leave tools on ladders where they could fall and injure someone • Do not use a ladder with broken, split or otherwise defective rungs • When using a crane, never pass a die or other load over another person.

All garbage must be placed in appropriate disposal bins. • All waste productions must be disposed of according to government regulations. • Do not engage in horseplay, running or play practical jokes. • Report all work injuries and rashes or skin irritation to your supervisor immediately.
