andwhichkindof vacationertubesto use.
6. •Vacationersshouldbe labeledby Unique
IdentificationNumber(UIN),name and date of
sample collection.
•Thepatient/donorshouldsit in a chair or lie
downon a bed.
•Phlebotomistshouldwear disposablegloves
beforeblood sampling.
•Applytourniquetto exposeveins. It shouldnot
be placetoo tightly.
7. Place patient’sarmin downwardposition.
The exactsiteof veinepunctureis decidedafter
feeling the vein.
Swabbing the veinepuncturesite in small outward
circlewitha disinfectant& Do not touchafter
disinfectingthe skin.
Inserttheneedle intothe vein. Needle shouldbe at
the angleof 30 degree.
8. The volumeof bloodsampleshouldbe goodquantity.
The vacationeris to be gently inverted5-10times
Afterdrawingthe bloodsamples, releasethe tourniquet.Removethe needle
fromthe vein.
9. Coverthe puncturesitewitha cottonswab, and foldthe patientarm for 1-
2 minutes.
Removethecottonswabafter2 minutes& coverthe puncturesitewith
BANDAID.
11. SAMPLE RECIEVING
Removethe samplefromthe rack or fromthe bag.
Checkthatthe tubeis firmly stopperedand checkfor any leakageof the
specimen. If thereis, handle as describedbelow
12. Readthepatient'sfull name fromtherequestformand checkthat the
sampleis labeledwiththesamename. If the sample is unlabelledor has a
differentnameto that on the requestform, treatas a rejectedspecimen
13. If the labelingis satisfactory, recordthe detailsin the day-registerand assigna
uniquelaboratorynumber;thisnumbermustbe recordedin the register, on
the specimentubeandon the requestform.
14. BEFOREPERFORMINGTESTRecheckthat the
sampleis correctlylabeledwiththe patient'sname,
thatthe laboratorynumberhas beencorrectly
assigned, andthatthe specimentubeand request
formbear the same number.
