Work History
Software Developer, Luminus Networks, Aug 2014 Apr 2016
Developed nextgeneration, realtime network management software aimed at datacenter level
software defined networks. I designed, implemented, and tested various web services as part of the
network monitoring and modeling process, wrote network simulation software, and created
visualization prototypes, among other projects.
● Created web services to populate and query NoSQL databases containing data reported by our
network agents; also wrote a command line client for the query web service (python/flask,
ElasticSearch, swagger, OrientDB/rexter+bulbs)
● Created a web service to categorize network data and fire events when various conditions were
met. (python/flask)
● Wrote software to model, store and serve access control lists (ACLs), which was then used in
building network models (python)
● Contributed to various internal libraries. (python)
● Wrote code to automatically generate API documentation (python, sphinx)
● Created (web) UI prototypes displaying the state of the network; implemented as a client to various
web services of our system (jQuery, svg/d3)
Software Architect and Developer, Institute for Systems Biology, Jan 2005 Jan 2014
Developed various databases, web sites and services, data processing pipelines, and other
projects in support of biological research done at the Institute.
● MediaDB, a database/website cataloging media for growing bacteria, with capabilities for user data
submission and search (python, django, MySQL, jQuery)
● Nof1: A project to pair FDAapproved drugs with individual cancer patients based on SNPs in their
genome. We used variations in the patient's genome to recommend drugs targeted to associated
proteins and/or metabolic pathways (python).
● RNASeq pipeline: a workflow tool for processing highthroughput sequencing data, including
filtering, alignment, and measuring of RNA expression, detection of alternative splicing events, and
2. novel gene products. Additional features include file provenance, cluster support, performance
reporting, and high flexibility (python, AWS/SWF, bowtie/tophat, samtools).
● Created the Babel web service and clients. Babel is a web service designed to find equivalent
identifiers of biological entities in various biological databases, allowing clients to tie together
information from multiple sources (perl, MySQL).
● Created a homology database based on combining the best data from seven different homology
databases (perl, MySQL).
● Collaborated on the design, implementation, debugging and maintenance of T1Dbase, a website
dedicated to supporting the needs of researchers studying Type I Diabetes. I created the basic
MVC architectural framework of the site, UI design, personalization support, resource access
control, testing frameworks, web services, and managerial/mentoring duties (perl, MySQL).
Software Developer, Univ. of Washington, Genomic Sciences, Mar 2000 Mar 2005
Worked with researchers to design and implement the Mammalian Reproductive Genetics (MRG)
website (defunct), a database/website serving gene expression and phenotype data to scientists
studying the mammalian male reproductive system. I also undertook additional bioinformatics
projects, including a survey of EST data to characterize differences in the 3'UTRs of genes under
translational control, and another to detect genomic miRNA sites. (perl, MySQL, svg)
Other Projects
Oceanographic data visualization, DNA sequence server, visionbased robotics, early online
communities, statistical software GUIs, testing, ISP support (java, c/c++, perl, et al)
Education
BS Computer Science, University of Washington.
