Diversity Value
The Office of Residence Life is committed to creating supportive
and nurturing living and learning environments that recognize and
celebrate each individual’s uniqueness, identities, values, and
experiences which one brings to us upon their arrival to campus.
Through diversity education and a climate of celebration and
acceptance, we help students and staff discover human difference
in race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity expression, sexual
orientation, socioeconomic status, ability, ideology, religion, and
national origin. We also strive to help students understand the
privileges they have, both earned and inherited, and how these
privileges impact their lives and the lives of those around whom
they live now and in the future.

“I personally feel like Miami University does not respect its
religious/conservative student population. I’m not the only one.”
“On Halloween, despite efforts to bring cultural awareness to the
forefront and in efforts by RAs not be insensitive many members of
[hall name redacted] dressed in culturally inappropriate costumes.”
“Very little interaction between students that doesn’t involve
partying and drinking.”
“There are many intolerant people in the Redhawk Traditions LLC. I
have heard slurs against racial minorities and queer and trans
people. Many times have social justice-oriented whiteboard
messages been erased or vandalized.”
Start with Why
Promote acceptance and appreciation of the Miami University
Statement Asserting Respect for Human Diversity
Attend and encourage resident participation in community and
campus activities such as public lectures, exhibits, intramural
sports, concerts, etc.
Encourage residents to be accountable for their actions
Develop an open and honest personal relationship with each
resident in ther community
Plan & execute activities that will assist residents in interacting
with one another, developing new skills or knowledge, and/or
familiarize residents with university programs, activities, and
services
Help
Listen and collect information
Assess safety and security of the student and community
Consult
Make a plan
Pass information to your supervisor
Follow up with the impacted student(s)

  1. E pluribus unum. One out of Many. Before we come from Miami, we come from the world. Address fear of naivete’ Certainly we want to learn from each other and help one another grow, but we also need to take responsibility for increasing our own knowledge. For sure, talk to people, but also read a book, watch movies, Google It. You are responsible for the development of your own knowledge, you have to be willing to seek it out.
  2. What stands out?
  3. What you’ll notice about diversity training: Learn about different student populations. We focus on underrepresented populations because we have a history of not doing that well as an institution and organization. We have a variety of staff members leading diversity training sessions. While the topics were conceptualized by DIC, the presenters represent a wide range of experience levels in our organization, but all share a passion helping us create an inclusive environment for our students. There is time for your to discuss diversity and inclusion in KC, team, and as a large group.
  4. Creating an inclusive environment is hard work! Deeply personal and far more complex that words can describe. Assessment - Climate Survey; Survey of Intercultural Awareness Educational Resources - Holidays and Heritages, What’s in the News, Google Drive Training and Development - Resident Assistant Training (Annual and Mid-Year), Chew and Chats, Book Clubs, and periodic training.
  5. Your job is 100% people and they are diverse. Diversity and Inclusion Committee has done our very best to plan a meaningful, productive, and impactful diversity focused training within 5. The 5 hours of centralized diversity training is not enough. Jessica, Lynn, Dan, Tasha, Jaymee, Julian, Steven,
  6. Certainly we want to learn from each other and help one another grow, but we also need to take responsibility for increasing our own knowledge. For sure, talk to people, but also read a book, watch movies, Google It. You are responsible for the development of your own knowledge, you have to be willing to seek it out.
