Introduction
As a part of our field immersion two Young Professionals (YP’s) from our department
(Haryana State Rural Livelihood Mission) have done a village study of Asan Kala village in
PANIPAT district.
The YP’s explored and identified peoples' needs by doing baseline surveys, studying
available resources in the village and nearby locality. It aims at analyzing and having a clear in
depth understanding on the integrated rural development at the village level, may this report help
any concerned organization for developing a micro plan by chalking out environment-friendly
holistic development way outs including public- private partnerships and private investment. The
YP’s did contextual study of village and met with the concerned stakeholders for their insight
and timely input for the study.
Objectives of Field Immersion
There were many objectives which were set by our coordinator; these helped us like
guiding forces to remain stuck to right paths
1. To get insight of the socio-economic & cultural realities of rural life.
2. To understand the dynamics of various village level institution in addressing the
development work
3. To understand the status of women: their contribution and the role played by them in
developing rural entrepreneurship
4. To understand the dynamics of social structure, infrastructure, resources, and various
intervention on the villagers & how it affects them
5. To develop a Young Professional personality.
The objectives that are mentioned in the upper lines are very much in relevance with the
objective of our course. While understanding the contemporary infrastructural condition of the
village, it is very important to relate it with the entrepreneurial veins existing in the village. The
line “Need is the mother of innovation” can be directly synchronized with the situation of this
village, the youth of the village are very much concerned with the existing problems of their
villages and so try to get innovative solutions of those problems like – lack of drinking water,
education, sanitation, agriculture related problems, etc. Being a new person in this Haryana,
firstly it is very important to observe what is happening in the village, how the community
approaches any problem, the approach they are taking to counter any problem or to enrich their
living, the entrepreneurial project going into the village, etc.
Methodology
The data collected are on demography, social structure, infrastructure facilities,
agro-climatic resources, village economy, village organizations & people’s institutions and the
issues of development. Both Quantitative & Qualitative were collected. The quantitative data
were on population, land holding, literacy rate. The qualitative data were quality of drinking
water, quality of roads, housing patterns, sanitation, food habit which were obtained from the
village after the interaction with villagers and with the use of tools like PRAs, Focused Group
discussion, informal meetings.
Sources of Data
The required data were collected from both primary & secondary sources:
Primary Sources were direct interaction with the villagers during household surveys (through
handout given by the organization), PRA exercise, focused group discussion, informal
interviews, SHG meeting, Village organization meeting, non participatory observation.
Secondary data were collected from Gram Panchayat Office, veterinary hospital, Anaganwadi,
Schools, Surpanch, ANM and others.
Limitations of Data Collection
A. Villagers were hesitant to tell about the details regarding income & assets.
B. Most of the villagers are working under MNREGA therefore they were available
only in the evening.
C. Villagers were not clear about the present value of their assets.
D. Schools & Anganwadi were closed due to summer vacation so exact detail related
to education were not gathered.
Geography & Social Structure
Location
Asan Kala is located in Panipat block of Panipat district and sub district headquarter of
Asan Kala village in the state of Haryana. It comes under Asan Kala Panchayat. It is located 10
Km from Panipat town. The total geographical area of the village is 1233 hectare. There are
approximate 982 household in Asan Kala village. As per 2019, stats, Asan Kala villages comes
under Panipat Rural assembly & Karnal parliament constituency.

History of the Village
Asan Kala village has a very proud history. Asan Kala is an ancient village having
produced gallantry awarded defence personnel and martyrs. Lots of sports people belong from
Asan Kala. It is said that the village was formed during Independence. When the riots were going
on all the migrated people from Pakistan came and settled in this village. People of Asan Kala
are living in a very peaceful manner. The people are from different castes and communities.
Demography of the Village
Total Population of the village is 5685; out of which total number of female is 2734 &
total number of male is 2951. The total number of children is 619 out of which number of boys
& girls (0 to 6 year old) is 341 & 194.

Literacy Level
The literacy level of the village is approximately 80% out of which student only majorly
student complete their Intermediate and opt for some work to earn their livelihood. Few of them
went to Panipat for further studies. 50% youth out of 80% go for art & commerce field and did
their graduation from SD college & IB college of Panipat. 10% opt Engineering, Management
and Medical field for their career development.
Social Structure
The village has a homogeneous population of Hindu. The social group composition of
village Asan Kala is divided amongst the Schedule Caste (SC), Backward Class (BC) & General
Category (Gen). Hierarchy based class structure is not very visible 70% of household Backward
Class (BC). 20% belong to Schedule Caste (SC) and rest belong to General category.

Weather & Seasonality
The climate of Asan Kala is hot & humid in summer & cold in winter. It has an average
rainfall of 60-70% annual. In summer it touches 47 degree Celsius and winter reaches upto 10 to
12 degree Celsius. Summer generally commences in the month of March.

Land
According to villagers the fertility of soil is good because of the yield per hectare is not
very less. Fertility is moderate, soil is brown. The land use pattern is as follows;

Water
The village is enriched with water sources. It has three canal from which two is for
irrigation purpose one used for drinking water. There are two sources of from where water used
to come and send to houses for household purpose. The intakes of the water are taken from canal
and submersible and send to every house of the village for further use. The village has six well
out of that only one is working. There are also several ponds in the village consider as a good
source for rain water conservation but six to seven ponds left out of eleven ponds all these are in
use for livestock. The drinking water facilities is the vital issue facing by the villagers it is bit
sour and the TDS level is also high. The gram panchayat also installed hand pumps and
submersible in several areas of the village
Infrastructure
Roads, Railways & Bus connectivity
The village is connected through concrete road, which links with Panipat stretch of 10
km. Inside the village all the roads are Pucca and made from cement blocks. The connectivity of
road is good only one road is Kuchha road due to continuously movement of heavy load vehicle.
The sample survey said that the roads are of good quality.
Asan Kala is also having railway connectivity which helps the villagers to reach out the
places and Khukrana RailWay Station are the very nearby railway stations to Assan Kalan. Bus
stop in Asan Kala, Panipat are connected with Bhadour Bus Stand, Madlauda Bus Stand, Sewah
Bus Stand.
Banks & ATM
The village is having State Bank of India inside the village due to which it is easier for
the villagers to do the transaction from village itself and don’t need to go anywhere. There is also
an ATM facility available in the village of SBI itself.
Electricity
The village was electrified in early 90’s. There is a power cut of thrice a day for every
two hours. The sample survey says that 90% of the village is electrified. There are six chaupal in
the village which shows the different area of village and every chaupal belongs to one
community. Thermal Power Plant is situated in the village which provides the electricity to the
whole village.
Drainage
Drainage is the problem in the village because there is the lack of drainage from main
line. Only one drainage line connects the whole village wastewater. Some village connect it to
the Ponds which is creating an environmental pollution. The main drainage line needs to be
repaired and to increase the broadness which will not overflow in the rainy season and not
encourage any diseases as well.
Communication
There are very few landline phones available in the village. Mobile phone network was
available in the village. The village has a good connectivity of BSNL, Reliance, Vodafone &
Airtel.
Others
Asan Kala is also industrial developing area; which provides lots of employment to the
villagers. There are Cement manufacturing unit, Thermal Power Plant, Refinery and three
handloom factories in Asan Kala.
Social Infrastructure
Educational Infrastructure
There are three school in Asan Kala i.e two government school & one private. Two
primary school for both girl and boy. Middle school is one for both girls & boys. For girls there
is only primary school so they went to panipat or take admission either in private school of Asan
Kala or Government school. There is also one private play school for kids.
Anganwadi
In Asan Kala five anganwadi is running in different mohalas. Earlier some of the
anganwadi not having its own building. But now 3 out of 5 running on their own building and
two are running in chupal provided by the gram panchayat. All the Anganwadi worker & Asha
are in the village itself and are working efficiently. They provide services like Supplementary
nutrition, Non-formal pre-school education, Immunization, Health Check-up, Referral services,
Nutrition & Health Education.
Infrastructure Related to Health
Health infrastructure at Assan Kala village consists of 1 sub-center having its PHC at
Kabdi village which is 15 km away from Assan kala. There is one private Jodhka Hospital in
village.
Sub-center staff consists of 2 ANMs Ms.Urmila and Ms. Meena 1 MPSW
Mr.Ashokkumar with 3 Asha workers namely Nirmala, Sunita and Meena for Assan kala.
Sub-center covers 20000 population including jattar and sondapur villages. Sub-center provides
basic services for TB malaria along with ANC and PNC care where they have to conduct
pregnancy tests, checking weight, height, blood pressure and sugar. Also provides Folic Acid and
calcium moreover delivery patients referred to PHC or government Hospital Panipat.Programs
like Janani suraksha yojana, leprosy eradication are running successfully at sub-center. There are
3 infants death was registered in 2018-19 year.
Some of the issues identified are sub-center does not have its own land or its building and
been running in private building on rent from the past 15 years due to conflict on its original land
from villagers. There is no sanitation and water borne related diseases due to awareness. The
major issue according to ANM was staff shortage, as they also need to attend the meetings and
had to go to every village once in a month, it is a door to door visit and too much time
consuming.
There are 20 children are disabled including 7 mentally retarded. In recent years there are
increased number of respiratory issues like TB and Asthma due to the presence of coal ash in air
due thermal power plant in assan khurd village.
Defecation
The village is more then 95% free from open defecation. Every household is having toilet
facility in their houses.
Infrastructure Related to Drinking Water
The village has water filtration facility installed by gram panchayat which directly send
water to the household that water is also used for drinking purpose but the quality is not that
good. Gram Panchayat already installed submersible in differents mohallas approximate 130
installed.
Cultural or Religious Place
Asan Kala is mixture of culture and religion. All different religions will come together
and celebrate with unity. There are 11 temples, 2 Mosque and 2 Gurudwara.
Micro Enterprise
Asan Kala is mixture of all various micro and medium enterprises. Approximate 20 small
shops were there which keeps some basic need items, like Matchbox, Bidi, candy, Snacks, Soaps,
detergents, cosmetics, biscuit, gutkha etc. There were also few women running their own shops
and dependent on themselves some of them having their livestock as well.
Community Places
There were also places where community people come together and celebrate the festival
and arrange the ceremonies also. Over there people also discuss their issues among them and
bring the unbiased solution as per their needs and environment.
Local Economy
Income Source
According to the household survey average annual income of the family is Rs. 1,35,000
and the average annual expenditure is Rs. 1,22,000 and the average annual saving is Rs. 15000.
These savings are used for creating assets, households purpose, and some part of it is saved to
cope with future crisis.
Livelihood
The livelihood of the villagers is multidimensional; people are engaged in a number of
activities. Villagers try to do maximum work to meet the family needs. Most of the people in the
village have agriculture as the primary source of income, apart from this they also do work as
wage laborers in the government schemes or private works. Lots of villagers are also employed
in nearby factories, industries or in panipat. As Asan Kala is also developing as an industrial area
three handloom factories are installed in Asan Kala which gives employment to the local &
nearby villagers. There is also a cement factory, Thermal Power Plant & Refineries where
villagers are doing both wage laborer as well as salaried employee.

Primary & Secondary Occupation of the Village
From the household survey of Asan Kala we found that 26 of 32 household were engaged
in agriculture as primary occupation and only 6 households were engaged in other activities.
Apart from agriculture people are engaged in Activities like non-agricultural laborer,
farm cultivator, Services, agriculture laborer, home maker etc as secondary occupation. The
Non-Agri Laborer 30% as secondary occupation and 36% are engaged as farm cultivator. From
the household survey we found that 56% of the earning members are male and 44% earning
members are female. The wage rate in the village is Rs. 185 for both male & female working
under MNREGA.

Service Holder
From the survey of Asan Kala we found out that there are a large number of people who
are involved in government service as well as private service. Though the village is nearby to
Panipat so villagers mostly opt to work in Panipat. Due to the presence of Thermal Power Plant,
Refineries and Handloom manufacturing unit villagers either employed as a salaried employed or
as a wage labourer.

Market Linkage
The nearest market available for the villagers are Panipat which is 10Km from the
village. Other available markets are Matlauda, Babarpur. Everyhold of the village go to this
market for purchasing goods for the whole week. The market is very huge containing almost all
products required by the villagers ranging from fruits, vegetables, clothes, makeup products,
soaps & detergents, sweets, all type of galla items. Matlauda mandi is very big mandi for
villagers so that they directly sell their production overall there. Babarpur Mandi is also in grand
trunk road easily available to reach the villagers.
A major product which come in & goes out from the village are annexed at the end.

The family does diversified activities to manage their family’s income like contract farming and
labor work. The reason being family have less amount of contract land family is bound to do the

Housing Pattern
The village is divided into 2 hamlets. The houses in the village are constructed in a
proper organized pattern. Most of the houses are located alongside in the road of the village. The
houses in the village are Pucca, Kuccha and Semi Pucca. The kuccha houses are plastered with
mud and the roof are of blocks (Kadio wala). And the semi- pucca house is where roof is of
blocks and walls are plastered with cement.
Banks
In Asan Kala State Bank of India is situated inside the village. And ATM is also
available as well.
Credit
In Asan Kala State Bank of India is also available for credit facilities as well as private
banks in Panipat. There are groups also available which provide credit facilities to villagers.
SHG
Village has 15 SHGs formed by HSRLM regulated by Haryana Government under
NRLM. Those SHGs are working for women in saving, loan & thrift as well as interlending.
Village Level Organization
In Asan Kala there are 2 village level committee and the rest community wise
organization. Majorly opted organization or institution are Gram Panchyat & Vaishnav Mahila
Sanghathan.
Political & Governance System
There is no political party in the village, but there are some people using the political &
social influence to enhance the household income.
Panchayati Raj Institution & Gram Sabha
There are Panchayati Raj Institution was followed by the Gram Panchayat. Krishan Lal is
the Sarpanch of Assan Kala.
Government Schemes
Poverty Alleviation Program
National Rural EMployment Guarantee Act (NAREGA) is running in the village.
Currently it is working on the infrastructure of the village.
Antyodya Yojana
Under this schemes they are distributing food grains, kerosene, sugar, wheat to the
villagers under Public Distribution System (PDS).

Agriculture Work is divided between both men & women. Women do the
work of removing weeds from the field & harvesting of the
crops while Men do the work of plough of sowing of seed

different for agri-culture labor
Education Due to government scheme of free education, girls are given
all the facilities like bicycle, books and other items.
Relationship with other Communities
As life in the village is interwoven the villagers have harmonious relationship with
nearby villages. Every community has their own locale where they stay and had a chaupal to
discuss their issues, meeting with people & arranging some event or ceremony.

Livelihood- driver and small shop owner
Salena is a self employed woman and an active member of SHG since 2016 in Assan
kalan village. Married at 19 years of age she is now 36 years old working women with a husband
working as driver on private vehicle, and having 6 girls and 1 baby boy in her family. Out of 6
girls 1 girl is disabled and can’t able to speak.
It’s been 19 years of Salena marriage, before getting married Salena was a sports
person participating in powerlifting competition representing Haryana state in bhatinda and
many other parts of Punjab where she won many medals. After marriage due to family
responsibilities and pressure from in-laws she had to quit powerlifting. In 2009 she built toilet in
her house by taking loan due to awareness she had about hygiene.
In 2016 she joined SHG through HSRLM program where she took responsibility
of pradhan in SHG due to her leadership qualities. After joining SHG she started saving money
helping her husband to run her big family. In 2017 she took 15 K loan from SHG and her 10k
saving from previous year she started small kirana shop where she started earning 100 to 150per
day but now after 2 years she normally earns 300 to 400 rs per day earning 7 to 8 k monthly.
After starting kirana shop salenas life has changed due to increased household income,
after starting her shop they renovated their house to pucca house moreover she bought fridge,
washing machine like appliances. Recently she celebrated her only boy child’s birthday where
she spent 50k on a program. Now her husband supports her in many initiatives after seeing her
success moreover her in-laws respects her more due to her achievements and responsibilities she
took on herself.
Conclusion
Asan Kala is a village located in Panipat Block of Panipat district in Haryana nearly 10
km from Panipat. The village is enriched Positioned in rural area of Panipat district of Haryana.
As per the constitution of India and Panchayati Raj Act, Asan Kala village is administered by the
Gram Panchayat.
People of Asan Kala are living in a very peaceful manner. The people are from different
castes and communities. Asan Kala village has a very proud history. Asan Kala is an ancient
village having produced gallantry awarded defence personnel and martyrs. Lots of sports people
belong from Asan Kala. Agriculture is the main profession of the residents of Asan Kala. Asan
Kala village is still waiting for Mega Industrial development. Education, Drinking water, Road
and Electricity are the main concern in this village.
There is no doubt that much improvement has been made in this respect in recent times
but it is not enough.
The villagers live in the midst of natural surroundings. As we rise early in the morning,
we can listen to the sweet songs of birds. We can enjoy the beauty of the rising sun and the sweet
breeze of the greenery of fields around, are the various pleasures that abound in the countryside.
The villagers live a healthy, peaceful life.
Villagers of Asan Kala, are deeply religious. They devote regular time to prayer and
worship. The villagers are socially knit together. Their life is co-operative and interdependent.
They share in the joys and sorrows of each other. They help each other in a time of need. Social
sense of Villager of Asan Kala is so strong that the guest of one is considered as the guest of all.
If banks and finance institutions provided loan and other financial support to the
villagers, this Asan Kala village will see the real development. Medical and health services has
to be improved.
In recent years the Central and the State Governments have taken some steps to improve
the condition of the villagers. National Rural Livelihood Mission, Solid & Liquid Waste
Management, NREGA, Indira Awas Yojna and Panchayati Raj are important steps taken in this
direction.

Introduction As a part of our field immersion two Young Professionals (YP’s) from our department (Haryana State Rural Livelihood Mission) have done a village study of Asan Kala village in PANIPAT district. The YP’s explored and identified peoples' needs by doing baseline surveys, studying available resources in the village and nearby locality. It aims at analyzing and having a clear in depth understanding on the integrated rural development at the village level, may this report help any concerned organization for developing a micro plan by chalking out environment-friendly holistic development way outs including public- private partnerships and private investment. The YP’s did contextual study of village and met with the concerned stakeholders for their insight and timely input for the study. Objectives of Field Immersion There were many objectives which were set by our coordinator; these helped us like guiding forces to remain stuck to right paths 1. To get insight of the socio-economic & cultural realities of rural life. 2. To understand the dynamics of various village level institution in addressing the development work 3. To understand the status of women: their contribution and the role played by them in developing rural entrepreneurship 4. To understand the dynamics of social structure, infrastructure, resources, and various intervention on the villagers & how it affects them 5. To develop a Young Professional personality. The objectives that are mentioned in the upper lines are very much in relevance with the objective of our course. While understanding the contemporary infrastructural condition of the village, it is very important to relate it with the entrepreneurial veins existing in the village. The
  • 5. line “Need is the mother of innovation” can be directly synchronized with the situation of this village, the youth of the village are very much concerned with the existing problems of their villages and so try to get innovative solutions of those problems like – lack of drinking water, education, sanitation, agriculture related problems, etc. Being a new person in this Haryana, firstly it is very important to observe what is happening in the village, how the community approaches any problem, the approach they are taking to counter any problem or to enrich their living, the entrepreneurial project going into the village, etc. Methodology The data collected are on demography, social structure, infrastructure facilities, agro-climatic resources, village economy, village organizations & people’s institutions and the issues of development. Both Quantitative & Qualitative were collected. The quantitative data were on population, land holding, literacy rate. The qualitative data were quality of drinking water, quality of roads, housing patterns, sanitation, food habit which were obtained from the village after the interaction with villagers and with the use of tools like PRAs, Focused Group discussion, informal meetings. Sources of Data The required data were collected from both primary & secondary sources: Primary Sources were direct interaction with the villagers during household surveys (through handout given by the organization), PRA exercise, focused group discussion, informal interviews, SHG meeting, Village organization meeting, non participatory observation. Secondary data were collected from Gram Panchayat Office, veterinary hospital, Anaganwadi, Schools, Surpanch, ANM and others.
  • 6. Limitations of Data Collection A. Villagers were hesitant to tell about the details regarding income & assets. B. Most of the villagers are working under MNREGA therefore they were available only in the evening. C. Villagers were not clear about the present value of their assets. D. Schools & Anganwadi were closed due to summer vacation so exact detail related to education were not gathered. Geography & Social Structure Location Asan Kala is located in Panipat block of Panipat district and sub district headquarter of Asan Kala village in the state of Haryana. It comes under Asan Kala Panchayat. It is located 10 Km from Panipat town. The total geographical area of the village is 1233 hectare. There are approximate 982 household in Asan Kala village. As per 2019, stats, Asan Kala villages comes under Panipat Rural assembly & Karnal parliament constituency. Asan Kala is an ancient village having produced gallantry awarded defence personnel and martyrs. Lots of sports people belong from Asan Kala. It is said that the village was formed during Independence. When the riots were going on all the migrated people from Pakistan came and settled in this village. People of Asan Kala are living in a very peaceful manner. The people are from different castes and communities.   • 11. Natural Resources Land According to villagers the fertility of soil is good because of the yield per hectare is not very less. Fertility is moderate, soil is brown. It has three canal from which two is for irrigation purpose one used for drinking water. There are two sources of from where water used to come and send to houses for household purpose. The intakes of the water are taken from canal and submersible and send to every house of the village for further use. The village has six well out of that only one is working. There are also several ponds in the village consider as a good source for rain water conservation but six to seven ponds left out of eleven ponds all these are in use for livestock. The drinking water facilities is the vital issue facing by the villagers it is bit sour and the TDS level is also high. The gram panchayat also installed hand pumps and submersible in several areas of the village Infrastructure Roads, Railways & Bus connectivity The village is connected through concrete road, which links with Panipat stretch of 10 km. Inside the village all the roads are Pucca and made from cement blocks. The connectivity of road is good only one road is Kuchha road due to continuously movement of heavy load vehicle. The sample survey said that the roads are of good quality.
  • 12. Asan Kala is also having railway connectivity which helps the villagers to reach out the places and Khukrana RailWay Station are the very nearby railway stations to Assan Kalan. Bus stop in Asan Kala, Panipat are connected with Bhadour Bus Stand, Madlauda Bus Stand, Sewah Bus Stand. Banks & ATM The village is having State Bank of India inside the village due to which it is easier for the villagers to do the transaction from village itself and don’t need to go anywhere. There is also an ATM facility available in the village of SBI itself. Electricity The village was electrified in early 90’s. There is a power cut of thrice a day for every two hours. The sample survey says that 90% of the village is electrified. There are six chaupal in the village which shows the different area of village and every chaupal belongs to one community. Thermal Power Plant is situated in the village which provides the electricity to the whole village. Drainage Drainage is the problem in the village because there is the lack of drainage from main line. Only one drainage line connects the whole village wastewater. Some village connect it to the Ponds which is creating an environmental pollution. The main drainage line needs to be repaired and to increase the broadness which will not overflow in the rainy season and not encourage any diseases as well. Communication There are very few landline phones available in the village. Mobile phone network was available in the village. The village has a good connectivity of BSNL, Reliance, Vodafone & Airtel.
  • 13. Others Asan Kala is also industrial developing area; which provides lots of employment to the villagers. There are Cement manufacturing unit, Thermal Power Plant, Refinery and three handloom factories in Asan Kala. Social Infrastructure Educational Infrastructure There are three school in Asan Kala i.e two government school & one private. Two primary school for both girl and boy. Middle school is one for both girls & boys. For girls there is only primary school so they went to panipat or take admission either in private school of Asan Kala or Government school. There is also one private play school for kids. Anganwadi In Asan Kala five anganwadi is running in different mohalas. Earlier some of the anganwadi not having its own building. But now 3 out of 5 running on their own building and two are running in chupal provided by the gram panchayat. All the Anganwadi worker & Asha are in the village itself and are working efficiently. They provide services like Supplementary nutrition, Non-formal pre-school education, Immunization, Health Check-up, Referral services, Nutrition & Health Education. Infrastructure Related to Health Health infrastructure at Assan Kala village consists of 1 sub-center having its PHC at Kabdi village which is 15 km away from Assan kala. There is one private Jodhka Hospital in village. Sub-center staff consists of 2 ANMs Ms.Urmila and Ms. Meena 1 MPSW Mr.Ashokkumar with 3 Asha workers namely Nirmala, Sunita and Meena for Assan kala. Sub-center covers 20000 population including jattar and sondapur villages. Sub-center provides basic services for TB malaria along with ANC and PNC care where they have to conduct pregnancy tests, checking weight, height, blood pressure and sugar.   • 14. calcium moreover delivery patients referred to PHC or government Hospital Panipat.Programs like Janani suraksha yojana, leprosy eradication are running successfully at sub-center. There are 3 infants death was registered in 2018-19 year. Some of the issues identified are sub-center does not have its own land or its building and been running in private building on rent from the past 15 years due to conflict on its original land from villagers. There is no sanitation and water borne related diseases due to awareness. The major issue according to ANM was staff shortage, as they also need to attend the meetings and had to go to every village once in a month, it is a door to door visit and too much time consuming. There are 20 children are disabled including 7 mentally retarded. In recent years there are increased number of respiratory issues like TB and Asthma due to the presence of coal ash in air due thermal power plant in assan khurd village. Defecation The village is more then 95% free from open defecation. Every household is having toilet facility in their houses. Infrastructure Related to Drinking Water The village has water filtration facility installed by gram panchayat which directly send water to the household that water is also used for drinking purpose but the quality is not that good. Gram Panchayat already installed submersible in differents mohallas approximate 130 installed. Cultural or Religious Place Asan Kala is mixture of culture and religion. All different religions will come together and celebrate with unity. There are 11 temples, 2 Mosque and 2 Gurudwara. Micro Enterprise Asan Kala is mixture of all various micro and medium enterprises. Approximate 20 small shops were there which keeps some basic need items, like Matchbox, Bidi, candy, Snacks, Soaps,
  • 15. detergents, cosmetics, biscuit, gutkha etc. There were also few women running their own shops and dependent on themselves some of them having their livestock as well. Community Places There were also places where community people come together and celebrate the festival and arrange the ceremonies also. Over there people also discuss their issues among them and bring the unbiased solution as per their needs and environment. Local Economy Income Source According to the household survey average annual income of the family is Rs. 1,35,000 and the average annual expenditure is Rs. 1,22,000 and the average annual saving is Rs. 15000. These savings are used for creating assets, households purpose, and some part of it is saved to cope with future crisis. Livelihood The livelihood of the villagers is multidimensional; people are engaged in a number of activities. Villagers try to do maximum work to meet the family needs. Most of the people in the village have agriculture as the primary source of income, apart from this they also do work as wage laborers in the government schemes or private works. Lots of villagers are also employed in nearby factories, industries or in panipat. As Asan Kala is also developing as an industrial area three handloom factories are installed in Asan Kala which gives employment to the local & nearby villagers. There is also a cement factory, Thermal Power Plant & Refineries where villagers are doing both wage laborer as well as salaried employee.

Figure. 1 Economic Activities Primary & Secondary Occupation of the Village From the household survey of Asan Kala we found that 26 of 32 household were engaged in agriculture as primary occupation and only 6 households were engaged in other activities. Apart from agriculture people are engaged in Activities like non-agricultural laborer, farm cultivator, Services, agriculture laborer, home maker etc as secondary occupation. The Non-Agri Laborer 30% as secondary occupation and 36% are engaged as farm cultivator. From the household survey we found that 56% of the earning members are male and 44% earning members are female. The wage rate in the village is Rs. 185 for both male & female working under MNREGA. Though the village is nearby to Panipat so villagers mostly opt to work in Panipat. Due to the presence of Thermal Power Plant, Refineries and Handloom manufacturing unit villagers either employed as a salaried employed or as a wage labourer. Other available markets are Matlauda, Babarpur. Everyhold of the village go to this market for purchasing goods for the whole week. The market is very huge containing almost all products required by the villagers ranging from fruits, vegetables, clothes, makeup products, soaps & detergents, sweets, all type of galla items. Matlauda mandi is very big mandi for villagers so that they directly sell their production overall there. Babarpur Mandi is also in grand trunk road easily available to reach the villagers. A major product which come in & goes out from the village are annexed at the end.

Housing Pattern The village is divided into 2 hamlets. The houses in the village are constructed in a proper organized pattern. Most of the houses are located alongside in the road of the village. The houses in the village are Pucca, Kuccha and Semi Pucca. The kuccha houses are plastered with mud and the roof are of blocks (Kadio wala). And the semi- pucca house is where roof is of blocks and walls are plastered with cement. Banks In Asan Kala State Bank of India is situated inside the village. And ATM is also available as well.

There are groups also available which provide credit facilities to villagers. SHG Village has 15 SHGs formed by HSRLM regulated by Haryana Government under NRLM. Those SHGs are working for women in saving, loan & thrift as well as interlending. Village Level Organization In Asan Kala there are 2 village level committee and the rest community wise organization. Majorly opted organization or institution are Gram Panchyat & Vaishnav Mahila Sanghathan. Political & Governance System There is no political party in the village, but there are some people using the political & social influence to enhance the household income. Panchayati Raj Institution & Gram Sabha There are Panchayati Raj Institution was followed by the Gram Panchayat. Krishan Lal is the Sarpanch of Assan Kala. Government Schemes Poverty Alleviation Program National Rural EMployment Guarantee Act (NAREGA) is running in the village. Currently it is working on the infrastructure of the village.
  • 30. Antyodya Yojana Under this schemes they are distributing food grains, kerosene, sugar, wheat to the villagers under Public Distribution System (PDS). Relationship with other Communities As life in the village is interwoven the villagers have harmonious relationship with nearby villages. Every community has their own locale where they stay and had a chaupal to discuss their issues, meeting with people & arranging some event or ceremony.

Case study Name- salena Age-36 Husband Name- Surinder Kumar Family members-9 Livelihood- driver and small shop owner Salena is a self employed woman and an active member of SHG since 2016 in Assan kalan village. Married at 19 years of age she is now 36 years old working women with a husband working as driver on private vehicle, and having 6 girls and 1 baby boy in her family. Out of 6 girls 1 girl is disabled and can’t able to speak. It’s been 19 years of Salena marriage, before getting married Salena was a sports person participating in powerlifting competition representing Haryana state in bhatinda and many other parts of Punjab where she won many medals. After marriage due to family responsibilities and pressure from in-laws she had to quit powerlifting. In 2009 she built toilet in her house by taking loan due to awareness she had about hygiene. In 2016 she joined SHG through HSRLM program where she took responsibility of pradhan in SHG due to her leadership qualities. After joining SHG she started saving money helping her husband to run her big family. In 2017 she took 15 K loan from SHG and her 10k saving from previous year she started small kirana shop where she started earning 100 to 150per day but now after 2 years she normally earns 300 to 400 rs per day earning 7 to 8 k monthly. After starting kirana shop salenas life has changed due to increased household income, after starting her shop they renovated their house to pucca house moreover she bought fridge, washing machine like appliances. Recently she celebrated her only boy child’s birthday where she spent 50k on a program. Now her husband supports her in many initiatives after seeing her success moreover her in-laws respects her more due to her achievements and responsibilities she took on herself.

Agriculture is the main profession of the residents of Asan Kala. Asan Kala village is still waiting for Mega Industrial development. Education, Drinking water, Road and Electricity are the main concern in this village. There is no doubt that much improvement has been made in this respect in recent times but it is not enough. The villagers live in the midst of natural surroundings. As we rise early in the morning, we can listen to the sweet songs of birds. We can enjoy the beauty of the rising sun and the sweet breeze of the greenery of fields around, are the various pleasures that abound in the countryside. The villagers live a healthy, peaceful life. Villagers of Asan Kala, are deeply religious. They devote regular time to prayer and worship. The villagers are socially knit together. Their life is co-operative and interdependent.
