Elmhurst Energy - Technical Operations Director
Overview
Elmhurst Energy is one of the most recognised independent organisations in the Energy Rating industry. Their role is
to ensure that individuals looking to achieve Energy Rating qualifications are trained to the highest standard. Their
certified members then produce energy certificates such as Energy Performance Certificates (EPCs), Display Energy
Certificates (DECs) and Green Deal Advice Reports (GDARs) accurately for buildings across the UK. Their
accreditation with UKAS also allows them to certify organisations to the Green Deal Standard - part of the
Government's flagship policy for reducing carbon emissions in the UK. As the leading Energy Rating expert they also
deliver bespoke solutions with complex software and tailored training packages to large organisations with specific
Energy Rating requirements.
The Challenge
Elmhurst Energy’s strategy is to continue to drive the Energy Rating industry forward through unrivalled customer
support, innovative products and a wide range of complementary energy rating services. In order to support this
strategy and the future growth they wanted to strengthen their Senior Management Team by recruiting a
Technical Operations Director.This individual would take a key leadership role ensuring the efficient and effective
day to day delivery of technical and knowledge based products and services within this highly regulated and
certified industry. Elmhurst Energy was looking for a challenging blend of experience with individuals requiring
knowledge of the built environment with an understanding of the regulated nature of the industry and the process
of certification and the stakeholder groups involved. As well as maintaining compliance to prescribed standards
the individual would need the commercial and entrepreneurial ability to develop products to meet demand from
clients and/or regulatory bodies across the areas of software, training, certification and consultancy services.

The Solution
Veredus entered into resource planning discussions with Elmhurst Energy in February 2013; this included
providing market insight, salary benchmarking, generating job literature and options for the Senior Management
structure.
It was expected that the Executive Search would be challenging with the combination of a narrow market and rare
blend of competencies required. Veredus looked to target individuals within the Energy Rating industry but also
the wider energy efficiency, building services, certification and Green Deal markets. After an intense period of four
weeks’ search where over 100 conversations were held that resulted in six interviews, the candidate shortlist was
presented to Elmhurst Energy. With market insight, candidate reports and assessment provided the client
progressed through a number of interview stages to successfully appoint to the role in late March 2013.
Elmhurst Energy appointed Martyn Reed who was Operations Director at the British Board of Agreement who
demonstrated the desired blend of leadership, commercial, technical and sector skill.
