5. Introduction
Fruit Juices are generally consumed
by most of the people in the world
or we can say, they are the most
consumed drinking items all over the
world. But did we know about their
effects on our body.
6. What is pH?
• pH stands for “Potential of
power of H+ ion”. It is the
measurement of Acidity or
basically of an aqueous
solution.
• Mathematically, pH is the
negative logarithm of the
activity o the hydronium ion,
more often expressed as the
measure of the hydronium ion
concentration.
• Mathematically,
𝑝𝐻 = − log 𝐻 + or log 1 𝐻 +
7. pH Indicators
• A pH indicator is a chemical compound
that is added in small amounts to a
solution so that the pH of the solution can
be determined visually. Normally, the
indicator causes the color of the solution
to change in other physical properties for
e.g., Olfactory indicators show change in
their odour.
• Some pH indicators are:
Phenolphthalein, methyl orange and litmus,
pH Paper
12. Procedure
• Take 5ml of juice in a test
tube.
• Dip a pH paper in the test
tube.
• If pH is less than 7, the
juice is acidic.
• If pH is more than 7, the
juice is basic.
13. Observations
• The table shows the type and pH value of the
most used fruit juices.
• Most of the juices are acidic in nature.
Name of Juice pH Value
Orange juice 2.8 to 4
Apple juice 3 to 4.5
Pomegranate juice 3.5 to 4
Guava juice 3.4 to 4
14. Results
• After conducting the tests, it was
concluded that the different types
of juices namely, Lemon juice,
Orange juice, Apple juice, Guava
juice, all are acidic in nature.
• Reason of acidity: Fruit juices are
generally acidic because of the
presence of Citric acid and
Phosphoric acid. pH values of juices
of different due to the variation in
number of acidic contents.
