Aim of the presentation
How it all started?
What do we do now?
How do we try to make films more
popular?
What’s next?
3. 3

Environmental Health
How it all started?
Need for new ways of awareness and training
materials and approaches:
»Employers indicating the «free video films on
OSH» during the Survey «Working conditions and
risks in Latvia» (2006, 2010, 2013) as desired
support from state
»Surveys during the training seminars stating
«attractive video materials» are required as
workers are hardly reading brochures or they have
seen too many of them
»Good Practice Award «Golden helmet» (Zelta
Ķivere) won by «Statoil Fuel&Retail Latvia»
introducing new way of training for employees

How it all started?
We started to think that if there is one
company already doing some video training
– there might be more?
It ended up in end of 2012 with first «OSH
Film Afternoons» – Free cinema shows
with all the films we could find that are
available in Latvian
»Participants: «Statoil Fuel & Retail Latvia“,
«Cemex», «NCC», «Ruuki», «Stora Enso»,
«Latvenergo»
»Also the «OSH Handbook film»

How it all started?
As there was cleary a demand – one of the
most popular information materials «Your
OSH Handbook» was turned into animation
film
So far – the most popular
material on Youtube
Also in English, Lithuanian
and Russian versions

So how do we get the new OSH
films?
After the realization that this is an effective
tool we started to think – how to get the films?
We were/are on very limited budget....
So there are few different approaches we try!
What we tried?
»Adoptation of suitable OSH films to Latvian
language
»Getting the companies involved in preparation
and taking share of costs throught the open
competition/subsidy
»Make tenders for topics we want to be covered

Adoption of films from other
countries
Quite good experience, but there are some
considerations:
»How to find the suitable film among so many?
»Work environment context?
»Size / length?
»Copyrights?
»Availability of «master files» for video and
voice files, text files?
Costs: relatively low ~ 500-600 Euro/film
Example: Estonian films by YIT and
consortium

Getting the companies involved
Idea: Competition among companies
interested in making videos for their own
workers and getting some financial support
Conditions:
»It has to be available freely for others
»It has to be in line with OSH requirements
There has been 2 competitions so far: 2013 (6
applications) and 2014 (12 applications)
3 companies supported each year (average
co-financing: ~ 1700 Euro)
Example: Ventspils Nafta termināls

Videos for specific topics
Started on 2014 with the idea that specific
topics are identified and addressed
Tendering for preparation of video material
In 2014:
»Film about OSH for teachers «Health teacher
– for every day and for your life»
»Animation film about the most common
causes of accidents «Think: Protect yourself
and your colleagues»
»Average cost: ~ 4000 Euro
3 films planned in 2015

Distribution of the OSH video
materials?
It is a challange!
Several approaches have been tried as we
have certain conditions and problems:
»Freely available?
»Analysis of views/downloads?
»Copyright in Lativa and other countries?
»Size of the video files for distribution?
What we have tried?

Another VIDEO experience - preparation
of «video lectures» from seminars
Started on late 2013
All seminars that are organized in Riga at our
university is made available as video files on
our Youtube account
They are split in presentations so a link can be
provided for the needed part – good for social
media and specific issues!
Example:
»Seminar on «Workplace health promotion»
in May 2014
-145 persons present
-322 persons watched it in Youtube so far

What else is happening with
regards to OSH videos?
It seems that this issue has become self-
sustainable and is developing further!
Many companies (that we know about...and
may be more?) are now doing some sort of
video training for workers
Also some OSH experts have specialised in
video training for employees

Conclusions
Effective and interesting OSH video –
effective prevention and information tool!
There are some issues to consider both
for creation and distribution
In our experience - ~1000-1500
views/month is a GOOD result taking into
account low maintenance costs and little
effort
If well managed and different sources
combained – COSTS are also reasonable!
