The Orkney Islands
The Orkney Islands are located just off the north coast of Scotland. A plane or a ferry will
get you to an archipelago of around 70 islands and to a world of tranquility, culture and magic.
These islands offer the perfect combination of history and innovation. There are
archaeological sites that will take you back in time and also clear signs of the future, for example,
the use of wind and wave technologies to produce electricity.
Kirkwall, Orkney’s capital, is a market town founded by Vikings around 1035. It is the busy
heart of Orkney with many things for visitors to see and do. Spend an afternoon exploring the
main street, visit the craft shops and cafés where you can listen to local music or join the locals
at a ceilidh*. There is something for every taste.
Orkney’s beautiful landscapes are constantly changing with the seasons. Clear waters, clean
beaches and long hours of sunlight during summer months have always attracted tourists.
Its natural environment remains clean and attractive with an abundance of plant and animal
species. Getting out and being active couldn’t be easier on Orkney. From sailing to fishing,
diving, climbing, walking and cycling, there is a great variety on offer, and a boat trip can be a
great opportunity to look out for grey seals, whales and dolphins.
For thousands of years the people of Orkney have been living well on the natural resources
of the land and the sea. The traditional industries of farming and fishing produce home-grown
vegetables, tender meat and wonderful seafood. These are just some of the ingredients you will
be able to taste at the local restaurants.

US summer camp: survival lessons in New England
Summer camp is an American tradition which started in the 19th century. Boys and girls
spend six weeks camping out under the stars and singing around the fire. However, they are
not on their own. Monitors aid them in activities which allow them to grow in confidence and
develop valuable new skills.
On a lake close to the Canadian border, Mike is living on an island with 85 other teens.
There is no electricity, no running water and no regular toilet. Boats are the only form of transport
and connection to the modern world. Welcome to the wilderness that is summer camp!
These days, parents think of camp as an opportunity to disconnect their children from
video games, mobile phones and the Internet. Mike was surprised to learn that he could not
telephone his parents from camp. On the island, there are just two mobile phones in case of
an emergency. Parents are encouraged to write to their children and wait for their responses,
which are always as short as their usual text messages.
When Mike’s parents went to visit him, much to their surprise he was happily cleaning his
tent along with three other thirteen-year-olds although he normally hates tidying his room. No
doubt living outdoors can provide an education just as important as the one teens get at school.

Read the following text. 1 5 10 15 20 The Orkney Islands The Orkney Islands are located just off the north coast of Scotland. A plane or a ferry will get you to an archipelago of around 70 islands and to a world of tranquility, culture and magic. These islands offer the perfect combination of history and innovation. There are archaeological sites that will take you back in time and also clear signs of the future, for example, the use of wind and wave technologies to produce electricity. Kirkwall, Orkney’s capital, is a market town founded by Vikings around 1035. It is the busy heart of Orkney with many things for visitors to see and do. Spend an afternoon exploring the main street, visit the craft shops and cafés where you can listen to local music or join the locals at a ceilidh*. There is something for every taste. Orkney’s beautiful landscapes are constantly changing with the seasons. Clear waters, clean beaches and long hours of sunlight during summer months have always attracted tourists. Its natural environment remains clean and attractive with an abundance of plant and animal species. Getting out and being active couldn’t be easier on Orkney. From sailing to fishing, diving, climbing, walking and cycling, there is a great variety on offer, and a boat trip can be a great opportunity to look out for grey seals, whales and dolphins. For thousands of years the people of Orkney have been living well on the natural resources of the land and the sea. The traditional industries of farming and fishing produce home-grown vegetables, tender meat and wonderful seafood. These are just some of the ingredients you will be able to taste at the local restaurants. Read the following text. 1 5 10 15 US summer camp: survival lessons in New England Summer camp is an American tradition which started in the 19th century. Boys and girls spend six weeks camping out under the stars and singing around the fire. However, they are not on their own. Monitors aid them in activities which allow them to grow in confidence and develop valuable new skills. On a lake close to the Canadian border, Mike is living on an island with 85 other teens. There is no electricity, no running water and no regular toilet. Boats are the only form of transport and connection to the modern world. Welcome to the wilderness that is summer camp! These days, parents think of camp as an opportunity to disconnect their children from video games, mobile phones and the Internet. Mike was surprised to learn that he could not telephone his parents from camp. On the island, there are just two mobile phones in case of an emergency. Parents are encouraged to write to their children and wait for their responses, which are always as short as their usual text messages. When Mike’s parents went to visit him, much to their surprise he was happily cleaning his tent along with three other thirteen-year-olds although he normally hates tidying his room.
